Did you happen to try Durian Fruit while you were over there? I've had some of that stuff, and it's pretty rank. Worst Fruit I've ever had in my life.
@belliouse NOW YOU TELL ME! I was a noob eating this stuff - I had never eaten it, never seen anyone eat it - I had no idea. I figured everyone at the entire thing. I learned my lesson... no thanks to you! hahah.
@pinoyericsonic I'm not sure really... but i don't think it was one of these bugs... Oh, I know what it was... in Hawaii someone gave me eel sushimi. Raw eel. I gagged so many times trying to get it down, finally I spit it.
Dude- I gotta give it to you! I wouldn't have the stomach to do that if I were in your shoes, but thanks for letting us know what it takes like & for the vid!
Man i thought it was raw!'!! that would big cool!!! I've eat'en thing raw spiders, earwiggs, worms, wood lice, ants all raw it's not so bad!!! man up dude!!
They're not cockroaches, but giant water bugs, what the Thais and Laos call Meng Da. They're carnivourous and live in ponds and streams. Not much different from eating shrimp or crayfish really.
Great videos Vern! Just spent a month in Thailand and saw a lot of these food critters. I ate some minced frog and a bamboo worm but no stomach for the rest. I heard a story from a bug seller of a few farang who supposedly got violently ill from food poisoning or parasites and one that died from eating the bugs from complications of DTD ingestion. Guess some of the critters have high levels of DTD from the farms. Have you heard of this? Do you think it safe to eat them next time I'm there?
Good to know that it was dead and cooked. It looks like a cup of tea after seeing the video of that guy eating a giant larva alive. That made me really sick...
It's a giant water bug (not a beetle). We have them in the US too, they're a little smaller but not by much. They call them "toe-biters" as well; they can give a pretty painful bite. They don't float, they mostly live below the water and breathe with a little siphone on their tail. I've seen fish sauce flavored with them.
@ichimurakun cooked - everything was cooked. I don't eat much raw here in the way of bugs. NONE in fact... lol. Good question - some people think I'm eating this stuff raw - I don't think I could take that.. I'd spit a worm up if I did that... I'm sure of it.
hahaha, im thai and i've never know thai people eat something like this! yikes, but I've eaten some worms, the fried white little worms with salts, thats my favorite.
This is a water beetle. It's safe to eat, and very good if you mash it with pepper, salt, msg, garlic, asian beef jerky, and fish sauce. You can eat it by itself but it does have a strong scent or smell with an after taste.
You're not supposed to eat the WHOLE thing! Just the meat.
It's very common for Thais to eat them. Really hardcore Thais will just grab one up live, bite the head off and suck out all the guts. They're water bugs that eat stuff like frogs and are a delicacy, especially the pregnant ones with these little green eggs in them. My mom had me help her catch some in Florida for her to roast up. The burning smell is awful. I could never bring myself to to eat them past tasting them slightly though.
you should go to china and drink this drink that has snake venom in it..it tastes nasty but it gives you the energy to run up the biggest mountian/mountains without stopping
I've seen that on a show about hong kong i think it was... that's sick stuff... and when they bleed a snake into a cup and drink a glass of blood? WTF is that all about? Not for me - thanks!
@thaipulsedotcom Oh yeah! i think the guys from Top Gear BBC did a show on that when they were in Vietnam! That Definitley looks exotic and tough to drink, I would say..
but that roach looks really 'gamey' the way you chew on it.
the grossest thing... I used to pick the worms out of the "sator" - which are stink beans or fava beans... but now I don't waste my time, and eat them alive. I had an apple the other day and it was bitter as I was chewing it - I looked down and saw this brown mess - a dead worm - and i had swallowed a good bit of it already. That was sick...
aw fuck man i shoudla warned you earlier i ate one of those things about a year ago and its legs are like leather, and i didnt eat its wings because they just kidna flaked and i didnt liek it, but really it tastes like intense powdered salt and a really weird other flavour, cant describe it besides cockaroach lol, after it i got sick becaus rit wasnt fully cooked and it had some weird thing in its stomach which didnt settle in mine, but yea nice video you did it pretty calm
For the Gross Grub Series the original videos were too poor of quality. I've since redone them - and they're MUCH better now - higher resolution. Youtube doesn't allow us to replace videos with a fresh copy that's better resolution... so- oh well.

Haha. You're doing it wrong.
You're supposed to get the wing out and open that bag and eat the inside of that bag.
Some people get the front leg and just chew it, then spit it out.
That's all you eat. Not that whole thing.
