A #1 hit for Sylvia on the Rhythm & Blues charts. It was the 266th #1 R&B song of the Rock Era. It also hit #3 on the Top 40 charts and #14 in the United Kingdom. Sadly, Sylvia left this world this past September. Sylvia, thank you for the memories.
I'm gonna keep it real. I was 15yrs. old when this song came out and I was so confused as to why my panties was always moist after listening to this song. After asking my oldest sister, I was told that I was just "growing up". Thanks Ms. Sylvia for being a part of my life while going through puberty and bringing out the woman in me! R.I.P.
When this was playing of the air back in the day I thought to myself that someone's gonna get in trouble real soon for putting on uncut. LOL. She looked exactly like she sounded; REEEEAL GOOD. What a true pioneer and talent. RIP.
im reading a book called The Big Payback (The history of the business of hip hop) and it says that she shelved this song after Al Green refused to record and release the song. About a year later she was looking thru old tapes and a big box fell and smashed her foot. The tape "pillow talk" she had previously recorded was in that box, and she looks at her husband and goes "thats a sign, this song is a mother fucking smash" lol. just thought id share..
picture this 1970 something .. a very young girl listening to this song at a family gathering... "mommy what is pillow talk? is it like when i talk to you on my way to sleep?".. family cracks up and wait for mommy to explain this song to her 7 or 8 year old.. yea i have 1 question why were they playing THIS SONG at a family gathering with little ears around anyway..lol

Sylvia Robinson, a singer, songwriter and record producer who formed the pioneering hip-hop group Sugarhill Gang and made the first commercially successful rap recording with them, died on Thursday in Edison, N.J. She was 75,sylvia had been in a coma at the New Jersey Institute of Neuroscience and died there of congestive heart failure, a family spokeswoman said. Ms. Robinson lived in Englewood, N.J.
@anthony81860 how did she do that? i only know one of her sons was in the group sugar hill the first rap group.so how did sylvia introduce Rap to the word.im a fan of hers and i wanna know the story
@dimpsey3 Prior to her involvement with Rap music, rap was local to New York and commercially unorganized. Rap was made by isolating the instrument portion of the record and then speaking over the record. D.Js would do this simply by using a turntable. She said that one night she was at a night club in New York and notice how the people were responding to the D. J.
Next, she told her son Joey that she wanted to make a rap record and asked him did he know any rappers and he introduced her to Big Bank Hank, Wonder Mike, and Master Gee who were unknown rappers and unknown to each other at the time. These guys were from New Jersey and the rappers from New York did not know them either. She was truly in the music business. She not only made records, she wrote, produced and had her own company, Sugar Hill Production where she produced music.
@anthony81860 When producing Rappers Delight, she did not use turntable, she had actual musicians playing the instrumental portion of Chic’s “Good Times”. When she finished the record, she had trouble trying to get airplay because it was so long. No one in New York would play it. I think that she had to go to St. Louis to find someone who would play it. When it played, everybody wanted it. Although rap music is male dominated, a black woman put it on the map.
I first heard this on my satellite radio. Im 38 and love all the ol' skool tunes, man. Hurt my heart to find out she died. Rest in Peace my Sister in Soul (and RIP to the Candy Licker, Marvin Sease)

Man, if I could go back for one day, I could die pretty much in peace. Thanks for the download of this classic R&B tune.
@jasonptify Robinson died on the morning of September 29, 2011, aged 75, at Meadowlands Hospital in Secaucus, New Jersey from congestive heart failure.[3][9]

This song and the opposite sex and the Summer of '73. Slightly sweaty, the smells of Hai Karate and Avon's Here's My Heart mixing to form the most cheap and intoxicatring aroma I had ever smelled up to that time. Sylvia Robinson, rap producer and half of 'Love Is Strange' duo, dies
Sept. 29, 2011, 2:52 PM EST
Sylvia Robinson, the producer of the Sugar Hill Gang's pioneering hip-hop single "Rapper's Delight," died this morning at the age of 75 from congestive heart failure.
LOVE THIS SONG. I DIDN'T CONSIDER EARLY RAP FROM THE 70'S HIP HOP AT ALL. IT WAS JUST DISCO PUT ON A FUNKY SOUND AND BEAT, THAT WAS IT. RAP WAS SO MUCH MORE INNOCENT AND A LOT MORE FUN AND DANCEABLE THAN IT IS TODAY, THAT'S FOR SURE. RIP SYLVIA.
RIP SYLVIA.
I was in high school when "Pillow Talk" came out, and remember that it would make me melt like butter whenever I heard it. When I first heard the Sugarhill Gang years later, I was quite surprised to learn that their producer was the very same Sylvia. Quite an accomplishment to become the "Mother of Hip-Hop".
Sylvia: My heart has broken; when I was 14 you responded to my fan letter and sent me the most beautiful autographed photo which I have cherished for many, many years; I collected your 78s as Little Sylvia (Savoy) and Mickey & Sylvia (X-Vik-RCA), on up to your fabulous CD "Sylvia Goes Reggae" (Sugar Hill); when I met Joey at MCA Records in the late 80s it was because he noticed your compilation (Vibration) on my desk and got his wonderful mom on the phone so I could talk to you. Love you dearly.
@itsladyluck I am also upset due to my not passing on to Sylvia and Joey Robinson an audio recording of a phone interview I did with Joe, Sr. regarding his recollections of Linda Jones for proposed liner notes I was writing for a Rhino Records CD compilation on the artist. I had been meaning to burn the interview on cassette to CDR, my having found the cassette recently. In the interview I flipped out when Joe told me that they had acquired the legendary Perception Records/Today Records catalog.
Rest In Peace Lady. Thanks you for your contribution to hip hop. The first rap I heard was on my school bus I was a freshman and the older kids in the back used to bump Sugar Hill and Grand Master Flash. I would listen intently thinking "how good is this" Say Happy-Happy-Birthday-Birthday!!! Maybe 1980 After that I made mix tapes of my own using all of my older sisters r&b records on my parents all in one entertainment system. 15+ yrs later Puffy made millions sampling those records.
When I 1st read of the death of Sylvia Robinson I thought "Who's that?" until the song PILLOW TALK was mentioned. Much like Cher, Prince and Fabian, Sylvia was known to her fans by only her 1st name. And what a wonderful song this was and still is!
@That1Thug2Die4 -- Actually 1st rap song on radio was Edd Byrnes and Connie Steven's "Kookie Kookie Lend Me Your Comb." 2nd hit rap song was C.W. McCall's CONVOY.
@WytZox1 Lmao!!! You know that was not considered Rap Or Hip Hop... That would be like saying Madonna's "Justify My Love" was the ORIGINAL WHISPER SONG! Lmao!! Then we would say The B.B. King and Blues Singers were Rap artist because a lot of their song were spoken word. Better Yet Dolomite was the 1st Dirty Trash Talking Rapper. Lmao!!! Stop Playing Please...
@That1Thug2Die4 -- I stand by my opinion on early rap although it wasn't called rap then. Actually the 1st rappers were square dance callers. Rex Harrison rapped on stage and in a movie when he talked his song lyrics in MY FAIR LADY. Also in a 1930s Laurel & Hardy short, Hardy's wife was yelling at him in time with the music after Stanley turned on a radio. So therefore Hal roach produced the 1st Rap Video! Think about it, dudesicle!☺
simply put the sexiest song ever and i didnt even knew who she was !! I also heard her first hit LOVE IS STRANGE and is equally full of quality, will remember her always..

Listening to this I'm transported back to the summer of 1973 and those early fumblings with the opposite sex.

Wow, I remember this tune! Sylvia was so sexy back in the day, and sounded just as sexy, too. Sorry to read of her recent passing, God bless her soul, and her surviving loved ones.

WytZox1 4 months ago
@WytZox1 Lmao!!! You know that was not considered Rap Or Hip Hop... That would be like saying Madonna's "Justify My Love" was the ORIGINAL WHISPER SONG! Lmao!! Then we would say The B.B. King and Blues Singers were Rap artist because a lot of their song were spoken word. Better Yet Dolomite was the 1st Dirty Trash Talking Rapper. Lmao!!! Stop Playing Please...
That1Thug2Die4 4 months ago
@That1Thug2Die4 -- I stand by my opinion on early rap although it wasn't called rap then. Actually the 1st rappers were square dance callers. Rex Harrison rapped on stage and in a movie when he talked his song lyrics in MY FAIR LADY. Also in a 1930s Laurel & Hardy short, Hardy's wife was yelling at him in time with the music after Stanley turned on a radio. So therefore Hal roach produced the 1st Rap Video! Think about it, dudesicle!☺
