If you pay attention only the girls dancing are wearing pants. It wasn't socially accepted for women to wear slacks in public. Girls that wear considered "rebels" would wear slacks openly, in most schools women weren't even allowed to show their arms! My mom would tell me the teachers would pinch them for wear sleeveless dress!
Poster, what is your agenda here? To try and say that restrictions on and oppression of women has merely been manufactured by the media? Sounds like it. This video is of an exhibition dance- they're more or less in 'costume' for it. Men and women both had dress codes back in the day. You know, you can admit that women have been oppressed by our society AND that men have too. It's not an either/or.
We weren't allowed to even wear split skirts, culottes, to school or functions well into the 60's..1966 two girls were sent home for wearing long skirts (Grannie dresses)..fad clothes!
This has to be late 50's early 60's since the blond has long hair, she looks like she is a beatnik. and they weren't capris they were peddle pushers or clam diggers, for play and around the house.
Going by the clothes and music, this is clearly the 1950s. Capris were from the 1950s; where did you live that girls didn't start wearing capris until the early 1960s?
This brought back so many memories of the dances (mostly sock hops) I attended in the 50s. No one had to tell us not to wear pants to the dances -- we just NEVER did. The dances of the 50s like the Lindy Hop were the best.
I remember placards advertising the weekend sock hops at my high school (circa 1959-1962) reminding us to dress casually and modestly....with the last line on the placard stating: NO LEVIS OR CAPRIS, PLEASE.
My history teacher in college told us that when she was going to college in Boston in 1960 it was looked down upon for any women wearing pants outside of the home. I even remember an I love lucy episode where Ethel told Lucy that she had to change because she was not wearing pants to go on the subway.
So classy, wish this day and age danced like this.

I believe this video is from the early 60s. Capri pants did not become popular until after I graduated from HS in 1959.
