  • Yikes.

  • What a performance,Best solo in the world. Not one error or wrong chord. This man should have a bank holiday named after him. Can't believe elliot randall and steely dan had been playing it wrong all these years.

  • @brynsworth139 The kid's just starting out, man. Besides, you don't have the right chords either.

  • excellent!

  • OH MY GOD. HE IS A HUMAN-BEING AND MADE A MISTAKE AND HAD THE AUDACITY TO FEEL PROUD OF HIMSELF. HOW DARE HE! hey stratman, don't let these fucking cunts make you feel like an asshole. doubt any of them could do much better

  • @newfuckingwave No one's criticizing him for making a mistake. He should feel pride that he's able to tackle this solo. But he should have the awareness & humility to recognize that it's not nearly ready for prime time. Instead, HE is the one who has the AUDACITY to present this as an instructional video, pompously advising: "Think: economy of motion, that's the key..." If he had posted this as a work in progress, instead of as an expert demonstration, people would be more supportive.

  • CAn you send me a tab of your version pleaaaase?

  • Real nice Man!

  • It may not be EXACTLY spot on, but so what. This is GREAT playing and captures the essence of the tone and feel beautifully. Excellent stuff!

  • GOOD JOB

  • Fantastic style and substance - you rock stratman! It Don't Get Much Better Than That - Thanks!

  • a great couple of jews!

  • great stuff :)

  • Excellent !

this sounds very impressive - keep up th e good work - and thanks for sharing with us - hope you do some more in the future !

  • very nice job!

  • This rip has nothing to do with Skunk Baxter. It was ripped out by Elliot Randall as a studio musician and he received "$200" for one of the most memorable rips in Rock & Roll history IMHO.

  • Not to be too critical, but, DUDE, you need to get a Boogie and a PRS. The Strat and the Marshall (Line 6, New Fender?) does not have a good enough intonation to really do this justice. Shunk was like Jeff Beck is those days, "Screw the tuning, I'll bend to make it fit.".

@eqsmooth, yes, look up Jeff "Skunk" Baxter. Same guy, the next SD album, or the one after that had Lee Ritenour as the session player. SD may not have been able to keep it together for touring but the nailed it in the studio

  • awesome!!1

  • awesome stratman, i lived this song back in the day.....played it and identified me hundreds of times...silly corny...yeah to both...still love it..you are GOOD !!!!

  • Wasn't it Jeff Baxter from the Doobie Brothers or did he just play the solos? Sorry to complain but terrible audio no matter how good you are

  • @eqsmooth Elliott Randall played the solo on the studio version.

  • @nerkman very good. Baxter does a few of the other solos. Thanks.

  • @eqsmooth I'm not so sure that Skunk actually played on this particular song. If he did, it was most likely the muted rhythm part playing out of the left channel. The arpeggio figures leading into the guitar solo sections sound more like Denny Dias' playing style. And the guitar used in those instances also sound more percussive, like, perhaps played with a Telecaster, rather than a Strat. I could be wrong, though.

  • That was fanTASTIC !!!!! I wanted to keep surfin' but I couldn't stop watching. Thanks, stratman1920

  • ...Very smooth....that looks complicated as hell. lol

  • wow You are so great --bet Donald would like you to set in for walter if he had a sick day peace ,,to you and yours --I enjoyed this so much

  • This guy must have sold his soul to the devil to play the guitar like that. Notice that he has 666 likes.

  • @jboneau some people really practice and fucks like you with soul talk hurts only your devil inside you wanting to be next to the biggest guitar player.

  • @MultiShades Chill out dude! I was saying that in jest. I know it takes practice to wail like that. There's no reason to start static by coming at a dude all sideways. Next time, listen to the smooth jams of Steely Dan before dropping F bombs as a reply on someone's post.

  • nice fuckin pickin

  • very nice.

  • mean playn brother das mad

  • Very impressive man! Gonna plug in my strat and see what I can do. Get back to u in about a year...

  • GUITAR PORN !

  • Everyone wondered what happened to Denny Dias..... now I know.. he shaved off his beard and is making Youtube videos under the name Stratman1920!!

  • @Rheems1 Elliot Randal recorded this solo on the studio lp, not Denny..but Denny & Skunk perform it live in the early days.

  • impressive. very impressive.

  • That has to be one of the toughest riffs in music. Not quite Elliott Randal but close.

  • Come to the sunshine state, and lay down some tracks, BRAVO BRAVO

  • Fucking A.

Wish I could play like that !

    Excellent post,thanks,I really enjoyed that.

  • Good job ...if you're going to teach it, slow it down for us neophytes! thanks!

  • Good job kid. Great song too

  • Hey Stratman 1920 this was a pleasant surprise. I think you're pretty good. I'll make you the 1st alternate in case the other guy doesn't show up. LOL. Hey I'm just kidding with you. I really liked it, nice job. keep it up man. You need to get an agent, you got skills bro.

  • Awesome tone!

  • WOW!!! Bloody great.

  • Good God! Excellent, man!!

  • dude kicks ass! this is impressive most impressive.

  • Mate, You Are Awesome, - Congratulations and THANKS for sharing, and the inspiration...:) Kiiw Pete

  • Dude, I paused this so I could say this. I've listened to Steely Dan since the beginning and if I had to pick a favorite band, they'd be it. And "Can't Buy A Thrill" will always be special because it was first. I can't imagine how many times I've listened to "Reelin' In The Years", but watching and listening to you brings back how it felt to experience these riffs all those years ago. Thanks, man.

  • if it wasnt for people like this, we wouldnt have musical talent in an otherwise boring world

  • bang on, love it, know i can learn it, thanks buddy

  • Who is this guy

  • nice job dude nice

  • hey try this guy too......love the stratman and this guy rocks also..com/watch?v=j2PGeQpJ1PM

  • Quite simply stunning big guy.......one of the best Steely Dan solo licks and you nailed it!

  • I've played the strat Elliott used to record "Reelin' In The Years" song with along with a vast majority of his other work. Watching Elliott play is an honour, to work with him is more. Excellent work my friend! you do the song justice

  • I bet hes a pro session musician who has probably played with em all...either way great liks man great liks.

  • NAILED IT! Thanks dude I needed that.. :0)

  • your figers look real nice --but you will never make breakfast

  • is that you danny wop...

  • I think We all agree that this Stratman has nailed the song perfectly. Other than another you tube video by someone else this guy nails Reelin in the Years perfectly. Great Video! Do you have the tabs for it? How about doing a slow down video of what you are doing? Just an idea. Thanks again! Great job!

  • Damn Good..

  • Great job on a tough riff.

  • Denny Diaz LIVES! All hail the Telecaster!!!

  • Thanks for this - I am going to try and get my son to study one of the most famous lead pieces that I know of.

  • Elliot Randall himself! :)

  • nice sustain

  • Thanks for this. It's really helpful for seeing where and how some of those licks are performed. Good job, and nice Strat.

  • this is steely dan himself and i am telling you you are even better than me thankyou for showing me the way you are god

  • Please ID "cover' in the title. tnx.

  • Nicely done !

  • Okay, now drastically increase the tempo on the intro. You're lagging. Put on a set of headphones. Now, I ain't saying you're no good, cuz u r. The glissando at the end NEEDS INTENSITY. Don't back off.

  • Nice job homie

  • Nice!

  • Nice!.... Half a million hits! Wow! Mine has 15k and is worth checking out as well. Please do if you have the time.

  • Beautiful. I like the way you strain against the time a little.

  • Pretty good knowledge of Elliott Randall's playin' !

  • I can't speak for Elliott Randall but That was ok by me. Damn good!

  • U got the cords wrong in the verse dude.listenin closely theres an A note at the top of all the verse chords and your holding on to alot of the solo notes for too long thats why your strugglin to keep in time gotta play them snappier.Still pretty cool tho.

  • Is there an open tuning or is it standard guitar tuning?

  • Be proud man ... Nice ...

  • okay....great copy of music that was already out there. Let's hear some original stuff. You are very good doing music that was prepared for you to copy and I think, unitl you challenge yourself, you could do better than we heard here. I am not criticizing you, at all. I just want to hear your chops...YOUR chops.

  • well done, my man

  • hi from old friend, fuzzy here, love you from 105 to 120.....and you kick lot butt from 155 to 300...love the raw sound you make Strat....some nights i sit and eat cracker jacks and listen to good music like you

  • LOOOOve it.

  • @b8tovene That's not nice. In fact, thats something the Media would say these days.

  • great stuff......i have the sheet music with all of the chords. real subtle stuff. if you want it let me know.

  • Well done kid. Keep up the good taste in tunes.

  • I'm looking for a good guitar player...

  • .......And to think this didn't make Rolling Stones Top 100 Lead Licks is laughable and shows that Rolling Stone has no credibility at all!!!!

  • stratman! Nice work! I wish I could pull that off. Keep it up. Awesome band too.The Dan!

  • Nice. Really well worked out and executed. I'm doing this number with my band soon and your video is a really helpful way of figuring out the right bits in the right places!

  • How does he even remember it all?

    Nice job. Highly impressive.

  • Long live Jeff "Skunk" Baxter !

  • @empigasser You mean long live Elliot Randall. Skunk didn't do that solo. Those landmark guitar solos on those old Steely dan albums were done by Elliot,Denny Diaz and Larry Carlton. IIRC one Skunk solo I know of is Midnight cruiser. That one is very tasty indeed.Nice job playing Reelin.

  • badass!

  • Yes, hats off to the guitar player, but dont get carried away. He's gifted, but he's just copying, Some other bloke actually created this. Worst example of this is Steve Ray Vaughn,

  • It is a tribute to the great democracy of rock and roll.... that anyone.... young or old, black or white, tall or short, long or short-haired, fat or thin, rich or poor, jock all-american or grunge loner outcast...can produce a great contribution to the music...and all true Rock and Rollers instantly admire, respect and enjoy it..

This is great rock and roll at it's very finest .....and truly stands the test of time. A magnificent performance of a piece originally recorded almost 40 years ago.

  • brilliant

  • thank god for you tube.. im sitting with a beer agog with amazement at the dexterity shown by an otherwise unknown star !! more power to your elbow or fingers old chap !!

  • cheak out the dude w/ the sg he plays every Dan solo as if he wrote them incredible..i think he calls his sire "playguitarsolos..he's amazing, not to say this chap is good too..

  • Very Nice.

You hear it on record and it sounds impossible. Yet, to be able to see someone actually play makes it approachable. Almost. LOL.

  • amazing

  • I would like to add my name to the accolades, this is great, nice touch having your daughter (if it is your daughter) counting you in, thx for sharing.

  • Wow ! Impressive !! Phalaïna

  • Pretty damn good man!

  • That was nothing shy of INCREDIBLE!!!5 stars easily!!!Outstanding job buddy!!!!

  • @Midnighthour71 Ah come on some chords are not even close and to top it off he's hotdogging

  • your an idiot

  • What's 'an idiot' I don't have one.

  • Im a good lookin guy. I always got pretty much whatever woman I wanted and Im also pretty damn smart.

I would trade my looks, physique, women, and brains to you just for your skill with that thing in yer hands.

If I could've played like that when I was younger, half the world would be son or daughter of mine by now lols.

  • Wow, note perfect, although I'm sure Becker and Fagen would find a reason to do another take.

  • very nice...great touch Thanx !

  • Great job, I'd love to be this good! Also, don't listen to sebbbo77, AKA "the douche"!

Can't get any so he has to write about it in You Tube comments, ROFL!!
