@3l3an0r7 yeah they were indie that were techically great most indie bands are not that great musically but johnny marr really knew how to play thats why no other indie band could really live up to the smiths
created a culture back in the 70's 80's Air wear boots chains the words hit on troubles that come home too many , as U2 sung about the troubles at that time in Northan Island with the provisional IRA terrorists .
This is a "perfect pop song" if by "perfect" and "pop song" you mean totally unremarkable in every way. Not a single thing is memorable about this little ditty.
@Andrehippie12 Fail... the comment you make reference to has 33 likes, yours however has 0 thus validating the fact that this is stupid and individual opinion not shared by the majority...You sir should seek medical advice and take your cock out of your dead grandmothers arse.
@r3gan12345 I don't give a f*** if the majority agrees with me; the majority also loves such heinous music as that of Justin Bieber. If you want to prove my opinion stupid, instead of pointing to the opinions of others (or basing insults on my recently-deceased grandmother), why don't you explain why this song is so perfect?
@Andrehippie12 We can intellectualise it to explain why it's brilliant; as I said, see the top comment. But actually, you should be able to hear it's quality. It could be you're just not that sensitive to music (no offence). Some people aren't.
@TigerAmongstMen Just because people consider them a legend doesn't make them good. If you really, truly like their music, good for you, but you shouldn't like them just because they're considered a legend. Think (and listen) for yourself, and evaluate their music on your own terms and not on others'. At any rate, I've yet to have somebody explain to me why this song is so great other than basing their ideas off of popular opinion.
@Andrehippie12 Well nelsano3 said it best (the top comment). The melodic structure is brilliant, the lyrics are ...well.. he said it already. Can't you hear it? Very few tracks are that clever.
@Andrehippie12 I was given The Smiths greatest hits by my dad a year ago, didn't really think it was my kind of music but then i left one track playing whilst i was talking to someone and i fell in love with the "Oh no" part of the song. That song was William it was really nothing. Best. Birthday present. EVER.
what does any of these music mean to any of you?.When the metoer hits hipsters will by trying to work out of there having a cool moment.Mosa was part of my life and growing up in middle class hell it means alot more .
How is "The Headmaster Ritual" not on the Best of the Smiths album? I was looking at track listing of that album the other day and was shocked to see my favorite Smiths song wasn't on it. Oh well...
@andrewptob I wouldn't give a moments thought to the estimation of those compiling 'The Very Best of the Smiths' album. Not 'official official' Smithdom. compilation albums could never do the Smiths justice.
I like a lot this song of Morrissey-Marr because like poetry, it is cryptic but say very many things, i.e. the need of living in the way that you think in XX secle, the selfish and human self-confidence that in several cases you have to learn to survive and that possibly that this is so obvious that "It was really nothing". Sometimes I sing this song walking by the street.... Music and lyrics are PURE BEAUTY. who was T. Wilson? I am from Barcelona (Spain) and I don't know him. Saludos!!!
Their best single and a song that perfectly encapsulates them. We need more perfect 2 minute pop songs like this now more than ever. In fact, it always strikes me as ironic that in this lightning fast day and age where information is processed so quickly that it is considered irregular for a song to be done and dusted in under 3 minutes. Do most songs really need to go on that long? Waste of 'needle time' if you ask me ;)
This is one of the best pop records of all time. Morrissey and Marr understood exactly what made pop records work and they completely nailed it here, the structure is impeccable and Morrissey's lyrics are absolutely fantastic, how can you listen to this songs words and not smirk? I cant believe they were and still continue to be ignored by mainstream radio, because believe me that is what that they were aiming for, they were masters of the 2 minute pop formula.
@nelsano3 Hmm... I actually think this is the greatest song of all time. It has more life in it than a Beethoven song and yet barely pipes in at over two minutes a pop.
This Was Written about The Late Great Billy Mackenzie...Associates Singer..This is Awesome ,And a Great Tribute To Him.
