They are not even close in my opinion. No question the Rolling Stones are great, but they've had 40 years together to enhance their reputation. Led Zeppelin had about 12, and they still outsold the Stones badly when it came to album sales. Zeppelin also had a better drummer, guitarist, vocalist and I won't even go into how much JPJ brought to the band.

The only problem with the Stones is that the 40 total years really helps and hurts their reputation. If we compared the 12 years of Zepp with the first 12 years of the Stones, then I couldn't choose between them. But the last 20 years the Rolling Stones have put out pretty mediocre stuff and really only got by on their previous reputation. Led Zeppelin knew they wouldn't ever be the same without Bonham and they did the right thing by letting those years speak for themselves.
