What you're describing sounds like or similar to Cheondoism.. you should look it up if you haven't heard of it. Speaking of how you said you don't know what a lot of Atheists believe, I'd love to tell you what I personally believe though I can't speak for all others. This is very cool :) everyone is consciousness, everyone and everything is SOURCE ENERGY (GOD). Some people won't beleive me when I say I was shown this by my higher being.. when I say higher being i'm simply refering to the part of me that isn't emotionally driven and attached to the 3D illusion and that which is always focused on love, joy and expansion. I cried because I was so happy to remember and see the magic in who we are.

But when i consider spirituality and science I realize that everything at one point was one and that all things are interconnected ...The one being that affects this world the most is us... trees dont invent, dogs dont rebel, tigers don't build cities, its our collective minds that keep doing these things whether for bad or for good.
@24claudius I don't believe in ghost persay but I believe that whatever we are is a form of energy and that the death of the body does not make that energy just disappear but disperse or release. Its my theory what people may sense is at time residual energy or "echos"
