No not male and female just genetically different, both plants will fruit. Seedlings will cross pollinate with each other, but 2 grafted plants of the same variety will not. Pawpaw will take time to fruit. They must mature, from a gallon size plant, or around 1 year old it will probably be about 5 to 7 years to fruit.

@ediblelandscaping I'm interested in planting some of these, but have some questions.
How do we know if a nursery selling us two or three paw paw trees are selling us trees that are "genetically different" (so that they will cross pollinate to give a good harvest of paw paw fruits)??
How do we know whether they just sell us a few small trees cloned/grown from the same, genetically-identical parent tree??
@online4videos Seedlings are genetically different and pollinate one another. Clones are very hard to propagate from the mother plant. They don't have their own roots when they are small. Just and 'umbilical' root. So, usually no one sells them.
Do we need both male and female in order to have papaw fruits? How do we know which are male and female from the nursery? How does the nursery know when the plant is to too small to produce the flower for distinction. A friend of mine ended up with ten male plants and zero female which he bought from the nursery.
You are an inspiration ! How very blessed my husband and I are to have found you on the internet. Thanks ever so much for educating us on this fascinating and historical fruit tree We wish for you and your family much success, good health , and longevity "All the Best" ! You are a Blessed man! Take Great care, do have a Lovely summer!
Congratulations on your video. Very interesting to know how to eat them. We planted some that we purchased from you and are eagerly waiting for our delicious fruit.

@online4videos From seeds you are looking about 4 to 6 years to fruit.
