  • This is wonderful! Something that I only ever imagined happening in science fiction/fantasy is actually taking place within my lifetime. I´m truly thrilled. Yes, they used an already existing cell body but they created functional DNA from scratch!

  • They created nothing, God is the ONLY creator. You are getting deceived, watch this: /watch?v=UYO9AuEhFwo

  • @helasmoh

May Zeus have mercy on their souls.

  • @westt44

And yours. Watch the video, you may learn that "Zeus" does exist, and evolution was attributed to "Zeus" messenger hundreds of years before Darwin was even born, you will NOT find such information in the media.

  • @helasmoh

islam is a rip off of a rip off of a rip off. you're just another know nothing that assumes you have some kind of privileged insight into the human condition because of where you born and what faith you happened to fall into. The majority of people around the world share this horrible trait but it's just a fault in our need for existentialism. Get beyond it and you'll find yourself. With it you can be nothing more than a slave.

  • @westt44

The millions, many scientists among them, who convert to Islam every year around the world do not agree with you.

  • @helasmoh

and how does that invalidate anything i've said?

  • @helasmoh

Argument from authority fallacy. Try again.

  • I love that birthday balloon placed by the growth plate.

  • just a funding bonaza...

  • is it hard to imagine our world consisting of nothing but non living organisms like rocks, water... how is it that living organisms orginate from nonliving entities... This cell is bullshit...

  • Just do some research. "Chemical revolution" describes how non-organic molecules can turn into organic macro-molecules

  • wait... if adam and eve populated the earth... then that means were all related.. and that means incest. fucking gross....

  • Frankenstein

  • i have a question, is the DNA a match for the original, or is it just exons and introns? i mean is there any transposons? and if this DNA was to be put in a prefixed organic solution with phospholipids and ribosomes, will it form membranes and a cell? or does it have to be inserted in a living cell or a plasmid to function?

  • when i watched this show, i was totally amazed, know we know that with a little human enginuity we can make anything, watch me take that back in like 5 years when nanotech robots are taking over the world, along with the universe...

  • These animals are guilty of committing Genocide against mankind. They allowed BP to buy this up and release it into the Gulf of Mexico. Now, It is eating human flesh! There is no antibiotic on Earth that will kill these things. BP has been spraying it every where and the creatures evolving from it are now making their way onto land. It is even attacking the metal on ships. Our entire Naval Fleet was removed form the Gulf when this began to occur. They will destroy every living thing one Earth!

  • @Wildrosestands Butthole.

  • as a biology student. this got me hard.

  • 5 people are just trolls. Stop talking about religion or whether God is real or not. Who cares? In the end everybody knows science always works! You don't need to believe it or anything else. It is tangible and real so all you religious nuts are just being hypocrites knowing full well you benefit from science every day!

  • what is a synthetic cell ?

  • @7Supernova7 A cell made and grown by a scientist, not naturally.

  • Hmmm quite fascinating, this is very much like the first gen mods done in the 70s, which led to all kinds of alterations of crops. My question though is, what does it do? I mean.....its alive what sort of function does it have? Food for thought I suppose.

  • @reock123

The one they made does nothing of practical value. It's just basic research.

  • @sdrawkcabgnipytmi Oh totally can see that, the first step in anything is showing you CAN do it. My thought was what sort of natural function did it take on its own, it cant just be sitting in a dish, reproducing and waiting to die with nothing in between. It also occured to me that, does this really count as a true synthetic, given that they couldn't create the base cell themselves?

  • @reock123

No, I wouldn't call it a synthetic cell. My understanding is that they used the already existing cellular machinery and just transplanted new genetic material. The cellular machinery then ran this new genetic code, effectively becoming a different species (the one from which the original code came from).

The point is to eventually use this to insert custom made codes that create custom life forms that could, for example, metabolize CO2 to create fuels.

  • @reock123 Yes. Yes it does.

  • The power to create life from unliving materials, Man is now God.

  • this is one of the biggest cases of deceiving masses in science by saying "Creating first synthetic cell , and playing god !!", what they have done is reading the sequence of mycoides's bacteria genes to make a copy of the bacterium's genome. The scientists then transplanted that genome into the cell of a different (but closely related) microbe, so they have copied existed DNA squence and planted it in already living cell , THEY DIDN'T CREATE LIFE FUCKING LIERS

  • so after they prove tht religion is fake, r we going to just black out after we die.....shit

  • @JuStAnAsIaNboY What does proving something have to do with changing anything?

  • @KrunchyGoodness yes, proving something can change anything...

  • Religion got bitchslapped.

  • its a alive. lol :D

  • Without host cells this experiment would have been impossible.

  • actually we can also do that (all of us) easy in 3 steps

    1.get a blood drop

    2.drop into fertile soil

    3.VIOLA!! grow a blood tree

  • durrrrrrrr. uh no, they didn't create the cell, they're saying they took a cell, removed the DNA, and put brand new DNA in it. that's not creating life you fucks.

  • @mun090 That's like saying a painter does not create art because he didn't make the canvas.

  • @BaddGirl420 no, it's like saying they didn't create life b/c they created DNA (which isn't alive) and put it into something that's already alive, dumbass. that's not creating life.

  • @mun090 An empty cell is not alive. It was lifeless until they gave it the ability to replicate itself.

  • @BaddGirl420 No the cell was already functional.Ejecting the dvd out of your PC and put a new one in.Far from creating the computer itself.

  • @DTRUTHbTOLD Fine. Think of it as a brain transplant on the cellular level if you prefer. Perhaps the media is sensationalizing it to make it more interesting to the non-scientific community, but regardless, it is a major breakthrough.

  • @DTRUTHbTOLD No doubt it's a great breakthrough.Watch the movie 'Gamer' with Gerard Buttler. That is more of the stuff that this could lead to.

  • @mun090 well yes... And when they in 2 years make the cell synthetically and do the same thing again and it starts to live then you should also be convinced.. :)

  • @mun090 Without dna a cell will not replicate and survive. Whilst not currently possible, the fact we have not synthetically constructed a cell is entirely trivial . It will be a difficult process but one that will undoubtably be possible, it is simply a organic chemical structure. The same could not be said of this project at its start.

Metaphorically think of it as a lifeless human body, we have taken this body and brought it to life via a genetic code written on a computer. Amazing.

  • @mun090 ,,,True,,,, It's the manipulation of life,,, not the creation of life.

  • @mun090 Arhhh you are sweet.. but dude... Yes it is... :)

  • this just proves where are also synthetic and were created, not grown from apes

  • i like this vieo

  • Awesome video, check out Forceite, Inc. for job info in this Industry!

    (forceite.com/biotech_jobs.php)

  • its a life! its A LIFE!

  • science bitches, it works.

  • @gooddarkjedi Hah hah say it as it is. :)

  • Well here's another thing that we can abuse because that's what we failures at life do best...

  • @deadhues More like that what you do best

  • So they replicated the DNA, and then they inserted it into a cell, and then thay say they made a synthetic life ?

  • It is a nice accomplishment and shows great understanding of biology. But we are just coping what nature does on her own to create us. What will be the positives and negatives of creating artificial sentient life that is the real question, lot good will come from it and much abuse by power also. That is a given rich evil people will do some very bad things down the road with this and that will not be legislated away. Your imagination is the limit on the good and evil this will spawn.

  • @jobedied

I'm gonna quote Spiderman: "with great power comes great responsibility." hehe

  • Unless it self replicates and then continues to split into more cells it is just a bunch of slapped together protein. Wake me up when you get to that point . But congratulations on what you have done so far.

  • @jobedied it does self replicate......

  • @jobedied wake up :]]

  • @Dammitooo wake up Dammitooo because I realize both good and abuse come from any technological advancement, that is common knowledge all technologies have been used for and against our fellow men . Exploitation and greed are ever present and consonantly in service.

  • Suck it creationists. Next up, the first Jem' Hadar.

  • the movie bladerunner is no longer fiction

  • Whether this qualifies as "new life" depends on whether a dna strand is alive. Scientists have been debating that for decades - i.e. Is a virus alive? The general consensus seems to be that it is still uncertain. Genetic engineering is quite an accomplishment nonetheless - but also a danger as Monsanto has shown by it's engineering of corn. Monsanto potentially destroyed a world resource without knowing the danger.

  • It is artificial life because it is an entirely new species that is man-made. In time (100+years?) we could create from just atoms alone.

  • a gross misrepresentation, this is not new life.

  • fuck off happy clappers! stop ruining the blue cells birthday!!! 5*

  • Waste of money

  • So what if these guys created the first synthetic cell, if you are naive enough to believe they did it for the good of mankind, you are all sadly mistaken. After doing this they will declare themselves Gods for creating life, join undercover satanists to make the world a sh*ttier place for the common peasant (everyone who is not an elite) and spread long-term diseases through vaccinations and put dodgy chips (nanotechnology, and the food isn't great either) in us and the ignorant will ask for it

  • they have created nothing. in time this will be seen to be a false claim.

  • @BibleWinScienceFail You need to get your head out of the bible and put it in a science text book

  • @azayas Religious extremists are ruining the world with their brain dead ideology.

  • @gettavid Sounds like you have you head up a preacher ass,DUMB CUNT..

  • c. venter, h. smith, c. hutchinson are the 3 stooges of "Molecular CLOWNING." 3 typical white men feeding the global deception engineered by the g8-nations & the corporate "monsantos." Be not in awe of their "mycoplasma" containing genetic sequences spelling their website address. YHWH is the creator of all; not these amero-eurocentric-josef mengele-tea party-racist demons. The arrogance of the west has reached its limit inviting its swift destruction; Be Blessed, Peace & Shalom,

  • Interestingly, they did not create a cell, just part of it, hmmm

"it still needs to go inside a (pre-existing) cell before it will come to life".

  • @anthonysands

They can create artificial cells too.

    Check it out:

Google: Scientists Create Simple Artificial Cell 2008

  • @anthonysands

    Or Google:

Penn State Scientists Create Simple Artificial Cell

  • @Supersemian Do you know why they didn't create the cell and it's contents as well?

  • @anthonysands

    No, I don't.

But it seems to me, they could if they wanted to.

Maybe they were just focusing on reprogramming the cell first and foremost.

  • @anthonysands

    Oops..

I mean re programing a "normal cell".

  • @anthonysands I agree. That's why they called it synthetic life. I wonder how they'll pull off creating a cell from scratch: membrane, dna, mitochondria (if it has any), everything.

But still this is pretty historic and awesome!

  • Yes, my zombie survival fantasy will come true

  • I'm becoming ever so aware of the lack of sense in humor that scientist withhold.

  • artificial clones human going to happen next

  • no such thing as god , god is most likely a visitor not from this planet . what everyone one does not understand is that we are believing a book thank is full of story telling , ( telephone game ) washed down info . a 9 year old child now is smarter then any man 2000 years ago . so how is it to say ,that what thay really saw was god , and not something thay have not even created words for .

this is great keep it up . one day i hope this saves someones life who preaches god.

  • this has nothing to do with religion people!

  • @everyone Stop ruining this with your philosophical shit.

  • woot

  • Aww, they bought the cell a happy birthday balloon. I'm sure the brainless microscopic blob appreciates that very much. :D

  • Ian Xel lungold who decoded the mayan pyramid explained this very well, we will become co-creators, it´s the last step on evolution. You can check this out with videos in you tube about Ian Xel Lungold, It´s very interesting. Now, I confirm what I believe about Aliens creating us, and this is The story of the Sumerians, 6,5 years ago. Next year, this descoveries will be faster. I hope it will be for good, But I´m not sure with the elite and the NWO

  • Two words....

    Blade Runner

  • @Supersemian blade runner was androids...... two words, stupid fuck!

  • @MidnightRayn

    Ignoramus!

Did you even watch the movie, or are you just talking out your ass?

    The replicants were BIOLOGICAL!

    You stupid, drooling little monkey!

  • @MidnightRayn

    LoL!

Hey Midnight, the movie is freely available on the internet (for those smart enough to find it). Why don't you try watching Blade Runner again. This time, try to PAY ATTENTION.

    LoL!

  • "God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him."

    ~Friedrich Nietzsche

Rest in peace my friend. One day they will see things the way they are.

  • @TutorialClarity God is not dead, the thing is that people don´t have the right concept or were taught wrong. God is a field, it´s one conciuosness, we are one. and we are creators, so we are god, we are part of that field. This is an ancient knowledge, that we lost a long time ago. I recommend to see: Gregg Braden, Ian xel lungold (he explains this very well) Next year our human discoveries will start to be greater. Have a nice day. We are on the evolution path, we are on scheduled.

  • @astruggia You are on too many psychedelics if you think that. Either that or you're just schizophrenic. There is no "field" or "god" or higher consciousness. There is only what you can detect with your 5 senses. There's no evidence for the existence of god (not if you use NORMAL logic, if you use the flawed fucked up logic that religious nuts use, then I guess it all makes sense), and praying won't make a difference regardless of what you're praying for.

STOP PREACHING SHIT YOU CAN'T PROVE.

  • @mostliberal Thanks for the bad words. You should learn how to communicate with others. One day you´ll find it true

  • @astruggia I'm not the one spewing out insane delusions, so I think I"m communicating pretty good compared to you.

  • @mostliberal You must be a really unhappy person, I hope you change, you will find beautiful things with a soul full of love.

  • @astruggia And you must be insane that you're high on your own delusions, thinking there is good where there is none. Believing in crap won't make your life better, and won't make people like you more (unless they believe the same crap). Believing in some fictional force or being won't solve any REAL problems in ANYONE'S life, so STOP WASTING YOUR ENERGY PREACHING.

  • @mostliberal You are wasting your time trying to have a rational discussion with a religious nutcase. I

  • @mostliberal lol you're fighting for science and don't realise the body has a lot more than 5 senses for which you can detect things...do some research man :P

  • @astruggia dude we stopped evolving the way animals do, we aren't going to becoming entities made of light and we aren't god anymore then weather is god, or dirt... that other was right you take too many acid and mushroom trips for your own health.

  • @TutorialClarity wow that guy must either be a passionate undercover satanist or "athiest", they do usually have many of the same qualities

  • @JustElijah Actually, unlike evangelical religious nuts that vote for conservatives even though monotheistic religions preach for sharing, and preaches for being stewards of the earth, preach for not killing animals (ok, "god" tried that for a few days, and then gave up when "adam" ate the apple). These religious nuts are being hypocritical about EVERY quality that abrahamic religions advocate.

  • @mostliberal lol what is it with you and insulting people, anybody who doesn't think the way you do is not a nut. You do not believe in God, so I'm not surprised of your ignorance in that area. God does not try to do things, he does them knowing the outcome of what will happen and takes it all into account. He did not give up when Adam ate the fruit, He gave Adam rules which he didn't follow so like any good parent, he punished him by. Your motive is wrong so don't get involved in religion.

  • @JustElijah I lived in Israel for 11 years, and was forced to read half of the Hebrew bible, so I know QUITE a lot about abrahamic religions. I doubt you even read a page. Most self proclaimed religious nuts are like that. They preach stuff they didn't read about. And I insult people who deserve to be insulted, because their ignorance can lead governments making shittier decisions that could affect me (like Evangelicals voting for Huckabee).

  • @mostliberal lmao @ "religious nuts", that never gets old :D...I've read a Hebrew Bible so that point was invalid...Everybody deserves to be insulted because nobody is perfect but do you tink that will make the world a better place? who people vote for doesn't matter, the elites ARE ALWAYS in control of the government and the left or right paradigm is just two routes to the same slaughter house. The government are NOT what the media portrays them as, if you were politically awake, you would know

  • @JustElijah This make no sense! There is something very wrong with people who believes in God, Eve and Adam... this is a stupid myth from Bronze Age.

  • @CanoPinto Lol, you my ignorant friend, are sadly mistaken. If it was a myth it would begin before earthly time was established. All against God are supporting Satan (whether you admit it or not), so I'd prefer antagonists of God posing as "atheists" to change their immoral ways to keep their ideas to themselves. I'll keep my opinions to myself, but truth must be manifested unto those who don't know it. You may not believe in spirituality but it's above you so it's ok if you don't understand it

  • @JustElijah You are really an arrogant piece of shit, arent you? You cant say what I understand or not, so shut up. I know more about your primitive religion than you xD. According to Bible, Satan is caged in a cave and cant do nothing against God. You dont know even your so called truth. Believe me, there are more Zoroastrianism (Manicheism ) and Platonism than Crhistianism in your religion nowadays...

  • @CanoPinto Oh so now you believe in the Bible? lol I didn't say you don't understand it, I said it's fine if you don't. If you understood spirituality, you would not be making the argument you are.

  • @CanoPinto science is gay

  • @TutorialClarity I'm a christen and I know he's real no mater where you are he will always be with you

  • @TutorialClarity ,.. Oohh really? and who is we? you mean you think they did? lol,.. jeeze. so we use stuff already here. that just proves we are very good at building things.ya wanna hear an even bigger secret? well it's not a secret now. and according to,....... hehehehe lol to bad your only seeing half the picture, p.s. the quote is flawed,. how can something that don't exist be killed or be dead?

  • @SPAGHETTIMONSTER1 Nietzsche believed God exists but is not relevant. That's what the quote means.

  • @TutorialClarity , they didn't create living cell they have only copied the genome sequence of specific bacteria then planting it in another already living one ,

and by the way that guy called "Friedrich Nietzche" suffered severe mental collapse at 45 age , quoting sayings like "God is dead , we have killed him" from a retarded person point that you are walking on the same path crackhead

  • Actually, the implanted genome was made by venter's team.

  • @Phyerbyrd , YEP , the break through here was copying DNA info of existing bacteria using chemical means instead of biological materials and then store it as computerized information and rebuild it again using the chemical ways and planting it in already living Bactria cell , that's all , THEY DIDN'T CREATE LIFE !! , those people are not scientist those are just bunch of publicity and money searchers

  • That genome wasn't copied, it was made from scratch. The bacteria they made is the first of it's species to exist ever. You're confusing what they just did with an earlier project. They said "first synthetic cell" not "made life from scratch". You do realize that his research team members all have PHDs, right? Anyone who uses the scientific method to learn about the world is a scientist. Venter has not said he has re-enacted abiogenesis, he says that he has created a synthetic species.

  • @Phyerbyrd , hell NO , i know what im talking about here , this project was supervised by a team of 25 researchers at labs in Rockville, Md., and San Diego, led by Daniel Gibson and Mr. Venter, they took Mycoplasma capricolum bacteria and its genetic code of DNA and stored it as computerized info. The data was sequenced as chemical DNA fragments and sewn together using yeast then it was implanted in another already living bacteria, and creating life phrase was used by them all the time

  • That was an earlier experiment, this new one was based off of another species but replaced a good amount of it's genome with synthetic DNA of their own design. I have never read anything from him stating that he made life from scratch and I'm pretty sure he outright denied that in one interview. Blame the media for blowing it out of proportion, not venter.

  • @Phyerbyrd Mr.Gibson and Mr.Venter have exaggerated there research to world ,they didn't write the 1 million pair of DNA by them self dude , for simple reason which is that our knowledge about DNA low level information interpretations is unknown to us, George Church, a genome researcher at Harvard Medical School, described Dr. Venter’s report as “glitzy” said lower-level genes and networks had to be understood first before it would be worth trying to design whole organisms from scratch."

  • @Phyerbyrd , the breakthrough here was on the scale of copying large sequence of DNA rather than writing it from scratch , don't challenge me kid in genetic science because i know alot , and i know that those scientist are just group of fake asses

  • Give me one example of him stating that he made life from scratch. Though I was wrong about the genome being an entirely new species, it was synthetic in the sense that they digitized it. If I'm correct they modified the genome slightly too. I have read an article on his website making no mention of creating life from scratch. If you don't believe me, search "mycoplasma capricolum craig venter" and hit the first link.

  • @Phyerbyrd , exactly dude , it was synthetic in the sense that they digitized it , and yes they modified it slightly , and there modifications were by adding some URL and e-mail address to allow researchers who decode the words to notify the institute, and Yes may be they didn't say that they created life in explicit way , but the most majorty of websites listed this phrase explicitly and deceived many normal people who were unaware of the details of this project ,

  • @Phyerbyrd , im not telling you that the result of this project is worthless , what im telling that next time they should use the correct words and conceive there accomplishments to the world in valid way, remotely from any exaggeration , even using the term "scientist create first synthetic cell" is far from reality , and you know that now after knowing the details about this project , nice to meet u dude

  • God

  • @darkangel2327

    Is dead.

  • @TutorialClarity I was about to say we are becoming god.

  • I wonder if we can mirror this.......

  • they didnt actually make a cell yet, theyve made their own functional dna and implanted it. while for all intents and purposes that cell is now synthetic and will do whatever the dna says, actually building the cell wall, mitochondria, etc, is very difficult.

  • @Neylonx

While want you say is true, please do not undermine the importance of what scientists have just done. This is a scientific breakthrough....a victory for all humanity and hopefully all the world.

  • I hate the way people say that they're playing God. God can do things no human can do, and since humans can engineer life, then it must be something God doesn't care if we do.

  • @CrewOfMasters

Well said! It's not often you come across folk in this particular community with brains.

  • @CrewOfMasters Yeah I get what you mean, creating life for humans is a big thing for humans (and God as well because nothing he does is a waste or useless) but this does not compare to what he can do...it's nowhere near!! lol

  • Imagine the potential of creating original single celled organisms with pre-specified functions.

  • I`m looking forward for the first syntetic man cause when it simple did not wake-up dispate its entirely functional we`ll have to look for the missing "component" and then we will understand i little old true......Who knows what this missing "component"is going to be??? hah?

  • make some synthetic meat for vegitarians

  • WOOT GROW ORGANS

  • Holy shit the Pope is gona send out the spanish inquisition on this guy

  • Was that Craig Venter towards the end of the video?

  • i wonder if this is good or bad..

  • this is brilliant but just for brief moment wonder what could military and governments have in there field of science right now :O) im just saying

  • I admire the work and expertise that has gone into this endeavour - we seem set on messing with nature, can we as a race be trusted to use it well? Will this achieve real progress and is progress always in our greatest interest when it comes to genetics?Who are the losers and who sets to gain the most from this work?

  • I wanna know what they can do with that cell now...

  • hope these ppl are responsible, not like mansanto

  • Hope muslims will not calm that allah created it

  • this shit is gonna turn into a virus that turns us into zombies

  • @man0verboard Nahhh, it'll be cool, it wasn't made by Umbrella.

  • @man0verboard

no more than a real cell.

The Synthetic version is no different

  • Great accomplishment!

  • and this how the android uprising began, with a blue synthetic cell

  • Science: It works!

  • I bet the goverment already has droids by the moment

  • I guess that makes us God.

  • @RockSmithStudio

No, it doesn't make us "god". We're just humans. There is probably not a god. And if there were a god, one of two things can be said: 1) He/she/it/them doesn't care what we do; or 2) he/she/it/them gave scientists the inspiration and ability to do what they have just done.

Don't you see where this could go? Imagine a world where no child suffers some horrible genetic defect. Imagine harmless bacteria that is "designed", if you will, to destroy harmful bacteria. Imagine!

  • @kimberlyliles I was joking. Many people don't like this because it gives humanity too much power. I understand that this discovery could lead to the destruction of harmful parasites, cure genetic defects, and even cure cancer! I am amazed by the potential this discovery has. Back to what I said about us being gods, I was totally joking, but I guess its hard to see that through text.

  • @RockSmithStudio

One look at your faves, and I would've realized you were, in fact, just joking. Sorry for making false assumptions. Admittedly, I am on the defensive about this new scientific breakthrough because I am sure that there will be much needless struggle with it. I am ready and willing to stand up for science on this one. This could lead to answers for SO many issues we have today---we need this! If we can get everyone's support, the results would be nothing short of revolutionary!

  • @kimberlyliles Ya, I guess sarcasm isn't good on text! I don't think most realize how big this is. To be able to manipulate a cell into another cell with new functions can do so many things to our society. It can purify waste, cure diseases and genetic defects, and some say it can be a way to produce alternate fuel. The possibilities are endless. This is a huge step in the progression of mankind.
