@snare - I understand where you are coming from. Breaking all Illusions is probably the one good track. But it's a laborious listen whereas Icononoclast is a thrill a second ride. DT have done some amazing music but I feel there time has come. Mangini is a great technician but he lacks the feel of Portnoy.

I actually agree with Portnoy having more "feel" than Mangini...at least when you watch them play. I don't like either one more than the other, but Mangini is certainly capable of playing much more than Portnoy.

People have been saying "it's their time" ever since 6DOIT (my favorite DT album), and they've continued to put out great stuff in my opinion...they're evolving in a good way if you ask me. I love their stuff from IAW through SFAM and TOT all the way to ADTOE. :)

Dream Theater died when Portnoy left. I didn't think so at the time but I bought ADTOE and gave it a chance then threw it out my car window. Every other DT album has memorable themes. ADTOE sadly does not. It's one word - BLAND! Symphony X's Iconoclast - WOW

Did you not like Breaking All Illusions? In my opinion, it's the best song they've recorded since Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. I've been a drummer for ~11 years and have been strongly influenced by Portnoy for about 6, and I strongly disagree. The day Portnoy left I imagined who could fill the position, and from DAY 1 hoped they would somehow find Mangini because I think his style fits the band so well.

Regardless, opinions are opinions. And yeah, Iconoclast is AMAZING.

I thought ADTOE was the best DT album in ages. Probably the best since SDOIT. It has everything, brutal riffs, technical wizardry (the mid section in Outcry), prog epics (Breaking All Illusions).

ADTOE has actually IMO all of those elements. Epics, like Bridges In The Sky or Breaking All Illusions. Sick and ''brutal'' riffs in build me up, break me down, bridges in the sky (right after the intro) and technical stuff in outcry and breaking all illusions. ATDOE is one of the best DT albums so far, still I miss Portnoy and he's my idol always, but DT carries on without him, Mangini is just perfect replacement :)

Ok, this gave me a small chuckle, but I disagree with the sentiment, especially the comparison to Dance of Eternity. I would argue that a lot of the instrumental sections in Outcry and Breaking All Illusions are easily just as technical or even more so than Dance of Eternity.

Nah, it's just to poke fun at the odd intro to "Bridges in the Sky." I've been a fan of Mike Mangini for 5+ years now, thought he would be the perfect fit for Dream Theater from the moment Portnoy announced he was leaving, was ecstatic when they auditioned him, and absolutely love what he has done with this album. In all honesty, I've loved the drumming on this album more than any of the latest ones with Portnoy.
