@snare - I understand where you are coming from. Breaking all Illusions is probably the one good track. But it's a laborious listen whereas Icononoclast is a thrill a second ride. DT have done some amazing music but I feel there time has come. Mangini is a great technician but he lacks the feel of Portnoy.
I actually agree with Portnoy having more "feel" than Mangini...at least when you watch them play. I don't like either one more than the other, but Mangini is certainly capable of playing much more than Portnoy.
People have been saying "it's their time" ever since 6DOIT (my favorite DT album), and they've continued to put out great stuff in my opinion...they're evolving in a good way if you ask me. I love their stuff from IAW through SFAM and TOT all the way to ADTOE. :)
Dream Theater died when Portnoy left. I didn't think so at the time but I bought ADTOE and gave it a chance then threw it out my car window. Every other DT album has memorable themes. ADTOE sadly does not. It's one word - BLAND! Symphony X's Iconoclast - WOW
Did you not like Breaking All Illusions? In my opinion, it's the best song they've recorded since Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. I've been a drummer for ~11 years and have been strongly influenced by Portnoy for about 6, and I strongly disagree. The day Portnoy left I imagined who could fill the position, and from DAY 1 hoped they would somehow find Mangini because I think his style fits the band so well.
Regardless, opinions are opinions. And yeah, Iconoclast is AMAZING.
I thought ADTOE was the best DT album in ages. Probably the best since SDOIT. It has everything, brutal riffs, technical wizardry (the mid section in Outcry), prog epics (Breaking All Illusions).
I'd put it 4th on my list of DT albums....after SDOIT, SFAM, BC&SL. It has been in my car stereo pretty much ever since it came out, and I'm with you on how awesome the midsection of Outcry is!
I rather like the new album. It seems like there is alot of discontent with their albums since six degrees. I think it all sounds great, too much talent and structure, even without portnoy, they still kill it.
@derek66137 Except in the mix department. The new album lacks the punch from the previous albums. Also, having Mangini play to sequenced drum parts feels like a really dick move.
ADTOE has actually IMO all of those elements. Epics, like Bridges In The Sky or Breaking All Illusions. Sick and ''brutal'' riffs in build me up, break me down, bridges in the sky (right after the intro) and technical stuff in outcry and breaking all illusions. ATDOE is one of the best DT albums so far, still I miss Portnoy and he's my idol always, but DT carries on without him, Mangini is just perfect replacement :)
LMAO! I fully agree with this video. The new album is good in its own way, but nothing like the masterpieces they've done before. Pretty bland compared to the earlier material.
Ok, this gave me a small chuckle, but I disagree with the sentiment, especially the comparison to Dance of Eternity. I would argue that a lot of the instrumental sections in Outcry and Breaking All Illusions are easily just as technical or even more so than Dance of Eternity.
Weird, Mike didn't say anything about sports drinks, breath mints, coffee, or what he had for lunch...that's not Mike Portnoy, it's a ploy! It's a hoax!
@NightmareCinemaChild because sadly with the a7x drama dream theater has gotten more popular, therefore its gotten a lot of immature fans that cant take a joke like this lol
Lol excellent... Just love the expression of Portnoy's face. When i first saw this vid, I didn't have the album, and thought to myself "man, where does this awful sound come from??", and when I listened to the actual song, I couldn't stop laughing thinking about this vid. Really funny :D
No, I love the intro to death, and the song is one of my favorites on the album. Why is it everyone on YouTube assumes that when you poke fun at something, it means you hate it?
@yourmusicguru Yeah I do have a problem. My problem with that album is seemingly negligible but it totally prevents me from listening to it. That little problem is called James LaBrie. A complete bad amateur who somehow managed to fool a group of four other people who I assume have otherwise very good ears. In his case, they are worse than deaf. Some front men have charisma at least. He misses the mark in that department as well. Oh, well; too many other good bands outthere to waste time here.
your the first troll to actually make your controversial opinion in a (somewhat) mature manner, despite the fact that your comment was off topic, I still respect your attempt to act grown up... Thumbs up from me ;P
@micanut48 I also think it's funny how you thought i would ask for the opinion of someone who doesn't know good music, such as yourself. If you can't see the talent LaBrie possesses, then my opinion of you is anything short of your opinion of Dream Theater. You wouldn't view LaBrie that way if you had listened to his solo albums prior to your little troll outburst.
Dissing any portion of Dream Theater only makes the person trolling look like a fool... Go listen to your "other good bands" now.
How can you "fool" millions of fans, and your own bandmates for 15 or something years? Maybe the problem isn't LaBrie, maybe the problem is that you're a jaded prick, mate. Based on how stupid your judgement of his singing is, I can only assume you mostly listen to music in which the vocalist screams, and belches, and farts into the microphone.
Are you mentally fucking retarded? This cd has everything on it. It has more prog parts than any other cd they've ever made. you idiot. probably havn't even heard it. I know this is a joke but you're just retarded.
Comments from users like you are what makes YouTube interesting. I know from looking at your page that your sole purpose on here (like sakukillerreborn) is to troll everyone, but "good" trolling still requires a brain. I fail to see how yours came to the conclusion that I dislike the new album, especially since one of the very top comments that shows up here is from me, explaining just the opposite. Go troll the video of some kid who is of your own mental age.
@thefoosa72 I partially agree, I think the new album is pretty good, but I just fucken hate Labrie, I think he is flat out awful. So I took my 3 favorite songs from the album and edited labrie out. You've got to admit though, this was pretty fucken funny, if you can't find this to funny then you have no sense of humor.
Unsure why Mike would faceplam this. It wasn't long ago that I remember "How can you prepare, for what would happen next, no son should ever have to see his father such a mess. It's a miracle he lived, it's a blessing no one died, by the grace of God above...everyone survived...HUUUUUUGGHHHHHHHH!"
this is just silly.. took a little bit of time before I learned to like that intro, but the song is just so amazing, so that eventually turned me into really thinking its a funny/strange/cool intro, especially the chorus
Nah, it's just to poke fun at the odd intro to "Bridges in the Sky." I've been a fan of Mike Mangini for 5+ years now, thought he would be the perfect fit for Dream Theater from the moment Portnoy announced he was leaving, was ecstatic when they auditioned him, and absolutely love what he has done with this album. In all honesty, I've loved the drumming on this album more than any of the latest ones with Portnoy.
They've lost a lot with Portnoy leaving. He gave DT balls, and now their left with some sissy ballads with some sick riffs, and an excess of what sounds like 80s style synth. BLECH!
For the record, I think the song this clip is from is extremely good - the intro is certainly odd, but I really like it, too. I think Portnoy would have been plenty open-minded enough to include this, since there are a lot of other "strange" things they have put in their music in the past. :)
No way dudes. When I read the lyrics, I imagined the song to be about a dying Native American (or other such tribal human) whose soul is being cast into another being by a shaman, thus ensuring he does not entirely die. The tribal maracas and Tuvan throat singing at the beginning and end totally fit in that respect, and it's fucking awesome.
@drumblaster666 oh u know portnoy then or what??? come on lol the always do that kind of stuff and btw portnoy wrote most of that album b4 Mangini joined.
@MrGamerBazer If what you say about Portnoy writing "most of the album before Mangini" is true, why is Portnoy NOT mentioned in the songwriting credits?
BTW, this is my favorite DT album since Octavarium
@drumblaster666 what makes you think that? as far as I can remember Portnoy always wanted to do experimental stuff in their songs, like the beat box thingy in in the name of god for instance, that was his work. Not to mention his cheesy backing vocals...
I think that's a mongolian chant which is focused on the throat. That is why it seems like he's clearing his throat... I like that it will be on the new album. New sounds and new atmospheres are always refreshing.
I think Bridges in the Sky (Shaman's Trance, whatever they're calling it, lol) is the best song on the whole album, to be honest. The riff that comes right after the throat singing is awesome!
No way dudes. You should make a remix of this
and btw how can you say that Mangini lacks "the feel", as he DIDN´T COMPOSE HIS DRUM TRACK HIMSELF?
nenissaK 1 month ago
I also feel Portnoy kept their sensibility in check, maybe I like it
heavier too and without him that edge is gone. There is
definitely no 'Count of Tuscany' or 'Dark Eternal Night' on this cd. \
Let alone past albums.
