@samealalan After I cut the resonator out of my Polymoog to create the stand-alone unit, Juergen Haible created a PCB that you can buy and stuff with the electronics and create your own front panel to build your own. And COTK (Club of the Knobs), a modular synthesizer company came out with a Polymoog resonator module you can buy. It's seen in the upper right corner of this video: watch?v=sl37XQfkJCQ
And since you have a Polymoog, you can process external sounds through the resonator.
@Elhardt cool. is the cotk module called "resonators"? I've been after a modular for a bit. need some cash. and running things through the poly is awesome, but having a much more portable section would be double that!
@samealalan Yeah, I think they call it the PM Resonator. PM being short for Polymoog. It came out after I posted this youtube video. So I've influenced a lot of people I guess. It's a direct clone of the Polymoog Resonator section and I think it might also have the preset filters too, like for brass, harpsichord, etc. You should be able to Google for them and get to their site for more details.
Man!!! that Jupiter through the resonator sounds awesome! I wish you could still buy one of those!! Amazing how the Jupiter sounds through that thing. Really sounds like a orchestra!
i'm figuring that there is no key following going on here, i'm just surprised at how a fixed filter bank can seem to change a synthetic brass sound into a real sounding brass.
@ToxicBrainSludge Yeah, there is no key following. Formants are generally resonances at fixed frequencies, or in the case of human voices they can change to produce different vowels. I guess it's that most people aren't used to using anything more than a lowpass filter since that's the only thing most synths provide. But acoustic instruments are more complex than that, so more complex filtering leads to more realistic acoustic type sounds.
wow man i am totally envious of whoever got this from you. what i don't get though, is that if this thing is basically creating like a 'formant filter', why it seems to actually follow the notes you play. i mean, when you get it to sound like a trumpet or tuba, the timbre seems to naturally fit correctly with each note you play. is there some sort of key following going on with it?
wow man i am totally envious of whoever got this from you. what i don't get though, is that if this thing is basically creating like a 'formant filter', why it seems to actually follow the notes you play. i mean, when you get it to sound like a trumpet or tube, the timbre seems to naturally fit correctly with each note you play. is there some sort of key following going on with it?
Synthetic and flat my ass. I would gladly sell some (all) of this new digital equipment in my studio for a JP8 in good condition. But I can't seem to find one. I guess that's because they're all in your studio. I'm not hating though. At least you seem to know what you are doing. Nice demo of the resonator by the way.
Yeah this boxe does sound very cool but don't forget it's all in the original patch, he's a very skillful patch designer and yes they sound very "real", with or without the polymoog effects box
This should come on every synthesizer. It's cool that you can use this on any synthesizer as a separate module, but why'd you tear it out of the Polymoog?
@RGAF1987 I ripped it out of my Polymoog because my Polymoog had so many problems that it was virtually unrepairable. I made this resonator module from it and also the Polymoog coffee table and sold them both off, and also sold off all of the other parts to various Polymoog owners to help fix their Polymoogs. So nothing went to waste, and I probably ended up making back the $2000 I had paid for the synth back in 1981.
@RGAF1987 A parametric equalizer should be able to do a similar thing. "CF" would be labeled "Freq", "EMPH" would be labeled "Q", and "Gain" would be "Gain". The only main difference would likely be that it'd constantly be in bandpass mode, unless some models come with high/low pass filtering.
Ok, what I mean is that all the stuff that you have here on this video I have in a soft ware called "REASON" Made by "Propeller Head" And whe I say all I mean ALL and more on the reason soft ware. Sorry for the miss understanding....lol
Actually, demesh6, what you have is a digital approximation of all the sounds this stuff makes. You have none of the knobs, switches and cables...nor do you have the perfect analog sound. You have a mouse to click on whatever, and a weak sounding digital approximation of what this gear can actually do.
Actually ,Voltor07 , I really do have all the nobs and all reverb, delays , and comparing 80's technology with the chips we have now in pc or I should say my PC it pritty close to all of it . look it up my friend. :D
Sorry, but near analog is still not analog...you can only do so much with 1's and 0's...why not get an oscilloscope and do a side by side comparison of REASON's waveforms and the waveforms of a Moog? Then come back and tell me it's the same.
demesh6: I see what you mean. I have Reaktor on the PC, and a Nord Modular which can also do such things. But the point of this video was to bring to light the little known and little understood Polymoog resonator section, plus I'm probably the only one to remove one from a Polymoog and turn it into a stand-alone unit. When I put it up for sale, a lot of people didn't know what it did or how it sounded, and then wanted me to make a video of it. I've done more impressive stuff with softsynths.
It means that demesh6 would trade you a Yamaha CS-80 a MiniMoog or a Jupiter 8 for the whole Native Instruments Bundle in original boxes and think that you are a fool.
I added a link in the video info box in the upper right corner, to the electro-music forum where Juergen Haible is offering a PCB he designed to allow people to build their own Polymoog Resonator.
Hello John Rice. I sold it because I already have all kinds of other filter modules that can basically do what the resonator does, and with more flexibility to boot. So I didn't think I would end up using it so much anyway. Plus at the price is ended up selling for via my private auction, I'd be almost crazy for not selling it. And I might end up with a couple of JH's PCB's, so perhaps I'll end up with a couple of resonators anyway.
anoteoftruth: If you have the capability of buying electronic parts and soldering, then you can go to the electro-music site, find the forums section, look for Jurgen Haible Designs section, then find the Polymoog Resonator thread, you can order a PCB from him to build your own.
synthpro: I'd guess I put in about a week, to get the thing out of my Polymoog, wire it up on my desk to be sure I could get it to work by itself, buy all the parts and power supply, build the case, and assemble it all together.
That is not as long as I was thinking it would take. I just got done restoring a polymoog 280a and would love to find the 203a resonators to run my poly through.
synthpro: Yeah, I saw your videos a few days ago. I noticed you used some of those newer divider chips that some guy makes as replacements. I should mention those things to a guy who just emailed me asking if I have any divider chips left. As for the resonator, I currently have some people bidding on it, and so far it's gotten up to $700. If you ever end up getting a 203a Polymoog, it has inputs and outputs to run external audio through the resonator.
fystasjoppheng: The sounds are coming from other synths, so I guess the answer would be no. But I suppose if you can patch up a similar sound on the Polymoog and set the resonator the same way, you'd get something close.
Nice work! I think the Polymoog is a massively underrated instrument (although its unreliability cannot be overstated) and the resonators are the best bit.
coldhandmurr: Adding that command only gets me higher quality mono, but still no stereo. I did the FLV encoding myself on those older videos to get hi-fi stereo when youtube didn't support that feature. Why youtube didn't persever the stereo after their months long conversion process to MP4, I have no idea.
If I use fmt=18 and record the video stream's audio into a wav editor, the two channels aren't identical. I'm not sure what the reason is for that, but I'm satisfied calling it "not mono".
What about putting your stereo ones on alternative websites that maintain your bandwidth and allow stereo (for instance one that rhymes with 'Limeo'), Kenneth?
baward: The thing is, I could just as easily upload them again on youtube, now that they support stereo. But that means duplicates of all my videos. I'd hate to delete the old ones because of all of the comments and viewings (the latter of which puts them higher in a search). I just wish youtube would allow replacing a video with another right in the same spot. In the mean time, I'll put up links to MP3 audio files in the info box, and maybe on "Limeo" too since it's free. :-)
I am very pleased with the 2 resonator units I have, the Korg PS-3100 polysynth (which contains a resonator section) and the MAM RS-3, both of which I love and are unique. But evidently the Polymoog resonator is rather more flexible than either...
baward: Yeah, I have the MOTM-410, which is the Korg resonator in module form. The Polymoog unit is for tone shaping while the Korg/MAM is more for doing sweeping filter effects kind of like phase shifting. No way to set amount of resonance, or set gain of each band, no lowpass or hipass modes, and no way to easily dial in a particular frequency. But the Polymoog resonator isn't voltage controlled, so no LFO modulation type stuff. So they have quite different applications.
thrcman: I've got it up for auction on the Moogmusic forum right now, starting bid $550. I put a lot of effort into getting the thing built. I have two people who emailed me and seem to indicate they'd like to buy it. I wish they'd follow directions and enter a bid in that thread. i want that. like bad. i got a poly, but it's in great shape, and wouldn't break it.
i wish i could get a broken poly for something close to a real price instead of inflated b.s.
