  • Sorry to say that this is not a designed flaw in any way. This more like a error/mistake made by the person doing the oil change. This is one of the reason why it's better take your vehicle to a Toyota dealership vs. to a quick lube place or an independent shop that does not know Toyota product. you said your self a "very aggressive technician bent the baffle " how is that Toyota's fault?

  • I am in the middle of exactly the same problem with a 2006 Toytota Rav4. The dealer is now telling me they need to pull the engine, take off the front, and find the pieces of the baffle. They already pulled the oil pan and took some out, but didn't find all of it. This has effected the Oil Control Valves as well... damn, this is going to be expensive... Any ideas?

  • WOW, you are lucky!!!!! One bump or pothole and you could have lost the top end of your motor!!!!

  • In the process of changing the valve cover gasket as I speak. Much to my suprise I found that exact piece laying between the cams right next to the gears and timing chain!!! I thought it was may fault until I saw this video. Thanks

  • @S13ALLDAY if do your own oil change; and, than yes it's your fault.

  • Is this a problem with the yaris?

  • @MrRichierich1990 Check if this motor came in the yaris. If you take the valve cover off inspect the baffle

  • My car broke down last night and this sounds about right.

  • This EXACT thing happened to me. I have a picture of the baffle stuck in the timing chain to prove it. What now? It is jammed up in there. I have 160k on mine, but was running just find and all the sudden, plow, dapple jammed and took forever to diagnose. The car still ran, but started missing on different cylinders randomly, then eventually died on idle. I'm glad I found the problem, but this is an expensive repair now!

  • the older 4 cylinder camrys are way better and more reliable

    92-96

  • Thanks Byron, My 2003 Camry is currently in the shop having the motor rebuilt. Mechanic called me today and sounds like the cause is exactly like yours. Baffle broke off causing the timing chain to slip and bending the valves. Are you getting anywhere with Toyota or pursuing other avenues?

  • This problem happened to me and my 2007 Avalon with 60K miles. It's wrong that Toyota provides no information to car owners about this problem. They have TSB that is issued to their deailers, but a typical car owner doesn't know anything about this TSB. The other problem is if you have your oil changed by various companies, there's not a good way to pin point who caused the problem. The repairs for the motor were $11,000 so we had to install a used motor for $7K! This is a toyota defect!

  • there is no 2007 2az avalons...

  • @acgmark there are no problem with the Toyota products. the problem is the person doing the oil change job. That is why it's better to have it serviced at a Toyota dealership.

  • @500hpsi It is clear the issue is a combination of a product and technician. Making a blanket statement such as "there are no problems with Toyota products" is just plain ignorant. Every manufacturer has issues, it is up to each to turn issues into opportunities through proactive resolutions.

  • Thanks, Byron. I have a 2002 Camry and a couple months ago the Toyota dealer told me I should get this fixed. I asked what could have caused the loose baffle. The dealer said it might have become loose because of vibration, but later it occurred to me that it was probably the Jiffy Lube guys jamming the oil nozzle down on that damn baffle. I think it's a design flaw, too, but I don't think they will admit it. In any case, I will have it tightened before the engine is damaged. Thanks.

  • I've had the same damn problems on two motors now! ( undergoing second re-install now) after much research I have to agree completely, the first one blew randomly at 65k miles, the second was making a slight noise first, sounding like timing chain, coming from valve cover area. Both motors were crankshaft failure!!! F*** toyota, never again will I buy one, just because they ignore this problem, and have put it at the owners expense. Thank you guy for your video!!

  • I appreiciate the info, fortunately I have always done my own oil changes. But I don't see where this is Toyotas fault. The baffle is there for a purpose, the problem was an incompetent serviceman.

I would strongly recommend you check for exhaust gasses in the coolant, I just had to deal with my 2.4 having stripped out headbolts . Now THAT is a design flaw which Toyota will not own up to, and will only fix while your under a warranty.

  • Is there a way to remove that piece before it could be broken off ?

  • @Andrew38ful Yes, remove the valve cover. Remove the baffle section under the filler cap OR re enforce it to prevent it from floating into the engine

  • i had same trouble with my daewoo lanos 1.5 L/ before timing failure i heard a noises in timing area after start of engine. repairs 500 dollars

  • yeah the people who put the oil gun to fill the oil messed it up.

  • our 04 we had we never had a problem like that

  • Thanks for information - I bought a used Camry 2002 and saw that piece of metal you showed - I just didn't know how it could brake off . You answered my question. I pulled it out before braking anything .

  • it's not toyota's problem, just the people who break it off...

  • @236nitro as you will see my comment we had a 2004 with the same motor and it didnt have that issue our 2007 which has the same engine doesnt have that issue either my dad has had one camry leave him sitting and it was his 1998 LE camry he had I forget what happened but he got a rental had it towed they fixed and we went back that night and it was running just fine
