I must admit that I have been wanting to try out this test all these while. Especially with the latest Canon Powershot S100. Well, a 7.44 x 5.58 mm sensor can NEVER beat a 22.3 × 14.9 mm sensor in terms of BOKEH even if it's a matter of f/1.8 vs f/whatever. Anyway thanks for sharing this video.
Thanks for displaying the video. I have a Nikon D5100 which I like very much but the Canon S 95 will be my essential pocket camera with RAW. Great set of videos which I have enjoyed and I can tell you love taking shots. Regards
I finally have a little money so I've been doing some camera searching possibly between this one, a Nikon P300 ( I like the added features its has ) the S9100 and the Cyber-shot HX9V I like its features as well and its high quality video, what camera would u think would be best for low light video & pics besides the S95 taking to mind I'm a bit of a photo noob and more of an auto person lol but willing to play with the settings on the camera, so what's your opinion?
@TylertheGeek28 Nikon is trying hard to copy the success Canon has had with the S95 and S100. The Canon S100 is where I would go. It has everything the beginner needs and a lot of what an enthusiast wants too. I would stay away from the Nikon. That said.....the Nikon is a good camera. They are getting better with this type of small camera. Canon IS better overall.
@nate42nd Alright thanks for your help, I actually do like the how the little dial on front of the lens can be programs to be used as the zoom or anything I think its a neat feature the one major thing I didn't like about the Nikon cameras especially the S9100 is that it lost control when u zoomed in during video its like u dropped the camera when it was recording and the lens was going crazy maybe if I get to a tech store I can play with it a little before I buy it anyways thanks
hey Nate, just wonderin, did you shoot this video itself with the S95? I'm sure someone else has asked that already, I just couldn't find it? I'm looking for a good camera to shoot youtube videos specifically of various topic discussions and don't want to use a webcam. That's why I was considering the S95 and also wondering if this specific vid you made was using the S95? Thanks!
@RonenNewmark Yea, I have made most of my latest videos with the S95. It's great for that. just remember to use exposure compensation during video recording. Do that and it makes great videos in almost any light. All the best.
Thank you sasktank. Glad to see someone that knows what their talking about when it comes to focal dynamics! Unlike most people commenting on this video.
So, could there be any workaround on this issue? Assumed that compact sensor couldn't record that much of colors to generate a desired bokeh effect. How about bracketing it at some level, just like making HDR pictures. So there will be more than one picture, and more colors for the same area. Just a thought. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for this interesting comparison. I'd love to see a similar video "in reverse" showing what apertures were needed to give a wider depth of field to bring the rear items into focus...
Dude, that's a lot of pill bottles.. lol. great review. I am loving the S95 more and more each day. I hardly carry around my bulky DSLR anymore. But of course thats not a fair comparison which you already mention. Still really impressive piece of engineering being able to cram all this into such a tiny body.
I read your reviews with great interest, but this time, you missed a point.
You are not talking about bokeh. You talk about the capability of the S95 to isolate the subjet via selective focus and shallow depth-of-field. And indeed, you prove your point quite well.
Bokeh is more about the visual quality of the out-of-focus planes. For the same narrow field of focus, we could have a good or a bad bokeh. Of course, this becomes all subjective.
@rouelibre1 right, there's always out-of-focus planes. But the KIND and the QUALITY is the bokeh, so even if the out-of-focus plane is the same at both of the cams, there are more soft bokehs and more edged bokeh. I think the comparison is not between the two cameras but between the lens of ur 7D and the S95. So if u use an other lens with ur 7D, there will be other results! so maybe the title isnt exactly right ;)
Nice review! We use a Canon 7D for our HD video work at co-DEPENDENCYfilm. We have adapted a ring to allow Minolta prime lenses for the Depth of Field we are striving for. Check out some of our videos if you get a chance. The 7D is one of the best DSLRs out right now. Supposedly the Panasonic GH2 is suppose to have a notch up on it...But we'll see once they release it.
Cool vid and the one thing I'm most interested in (shallow DOFs). I once bought a Rebel but didn't like lugging it around and I'd have had to invest $500+ for each good lens (kit lens was no good) - money I don't have, so I'm asking Santa for an S95 this year. :p
Hope you didn't get rid of the Rebel. Yeah it's bulky, but the best lens for the money has got to be the 50mm 1.8f. $100 on Amazon. My buddy just picked it up & loves it. Excellent bokeh effect. A 50mm prime lens is a must for any DSLR owner. But, I understand the bulk factor. This S95 looks to be a nice alternative for the convenience! My gear: Nikon D90, Nikon S8000, Pentax Spotmatic 35mm Film...keep on shooting!
Of course the reason the bokeh is less pronounced is the small sensor size. That said, the Fujifilm X100 compact camera will have the same size sensor as a DSLR in a compact camera with a 23mm F2.0 lens (prime)...so it WILL shoot the same DOF as a DSLR...and it is a compact camera. :) Also...to simulate a more pronounced DOF, you can shoot with Macro focus mode...this ends up severely limiting the width...but you get bokeh galore! :) Cheers!
@parkourmormon Not that I know of....the S95 has a 2.0 max aperture. Most others are 3.8 or more. You would have to go with a micro 4/3 camera to get this sort of image. They are much bigger and more expensive. The S95 is a G12 in a smaller body. There are no cameras right now like it. The 4X zoom is pretty good.
Oh. I've been looking at the Canon SX210 but that gets lens shadow. Also the Nikon Coolpix 8100 but it has 10X zoom compared to 14X of the Canon. And the Panasonic DMC-ZS7 is good too, but I've never had a Panasonic.
@nate42nd yea i always knew that. Im planning on getting one this christmas.
The thing about dslr is its too big and bulky. I guess nikon d3100 is the best so far. Image quality, functions, size is fairly small and price is reasonable
Im not that much of a photographer anyway. just for normal occasions and traveling.
You can turn any picture perfect just as long as you know how to use it. esp iso, aperture and shutterspeed. Those 3 are a must to know in photography.
@phenochio Compact cameras will not let you get the best IQ but there IS a down side with the size. This is why I have BOTH. haha And the BEST of both too! haha. You will love the S95. Great camera. The best compact made. (this size range) The Panasonic GF1 is one of the best too, but far bigger.
Nice point and shoot, Nate. S90 or 95 are one im looking at as well as G12. S95 does 720P right? Good man , your bang on with your bokhe and DOF advice. Cheers Rick
@rickjbradbury The S95 and G12 have the same sensor. The G12 is a VERY nice camera as well. The S95 will do the same thing in a smaller package. The G12 would be nicer to handle. Ergonomically, the G12 is superior, but they are the same camera inside. Thanks Rick!
So what's a good DSLR camera for a lot of Bokeh and night pictures? For a low and high price.

Would using a +1 diopter close up lens in front of he s95, shorten the DOF?
