Maybe the best thing James Caan ever did, as the lead. Would love to find and read "The Home Invaders", the book on which it's based. Written by an actual jewel thief, who I believe was an advisor on this film.
This was a big movie on "The Movie Channel" back in the very early 80's. Loved it. It somewhat warped me at the time. Had not seen violence like that ever at age 10. Still love movies from that era, though. It was a better time in general.
the best thing about 80s movies is it didn't matter how they got unto the roof with all that equipment or how they didnt completely burn down the building or how they eluded law enforcement. If a movie like this was made today there would be a big surrade about how un-real it was. It's really sad how a movie today either has to be extremely violent or reality nonsense
The problem with movies today is that CGI creates a too realistic dynamic. That drill weighed in at about 80 lbs. w the tackle. It could have been done, but you had to be buff, and at that time Caan was; and so was Belushi. Mann uses set and setting as a character instead of a backdrop, which is why his movies are always dead on technically and tactically. Use of ambient electronic soundtracks with edge really dials it all in. In Thief, every part is absolute and integral to the movie fabric.
@baboracus eh did you ever think that leos people could have pre-position all the equipment used, it would not really have been that hard to have done that, as for as the police goes, well look at your average chicago cop....really not intelligent, and more than likely the night patrol officers were too busy getting p(_)ssy and their collections to been effect patrolling that night !
I used to play this soundtrack while driving in the rain and always reminded me of the movie...one of my all time favs when in high school and all my friends had no idea what the music was but would be frozen listening to it..is sucks you in and you just listen...
tangerine dream is the group and this is the soundtrack to the movie, Thief. I had a cassette tape if you can believe that of this soundtrack when it came out many, many moons ago..great movie and whole soundtrack but the last song is most intense and guitar solo kicks ass.......as well as ending of the movie.
Saw this movie at the good ol latenite in Killarney as a teeny bopper.Enjoyed the movie alot then.
Yrs later when I got hooked on Pink floyds Dark side of the moon...I just couldn't remember where I had heard the track Time before ...then it hit me.
This movie is an all time classic,Willie Nelson et.Love when J Caan enjoys the ciggie after the bust... Dialogue, actors esp JamesCann all brilliant as is the Blues Joint
Anybody who wants to play synthesiser, should listen to Tangerine Dream. A long time fan, I think these guys are the stuff of dreams. Thief is my favorite soundtrack to date, and I have been listening to this music for over 20 years. Great movie, too! Thank you Mr. Desweef!
I have this song burned to a cd which gives me a glimpse of how this movie was a classic. Early eighties movies such as this one turned the pages for new genres which used more and more electric sounds giving a more dark and closingin furture kind of feel. Tangerine dream has become an icon to new groups starting their careers as movie music gurus.
I had just gotten out of film school when this movie came out and one night a classmate and I analyzed the plot and movie for hours, way past midnight.
First nine minutes of the movie...nine words of dialogue:
4:09 ("Frank Is Set Up"), is as cool as it gets. Wish we had a bit more of that scene here. Cool clip. Thanks for uploading.

I love Michael Mann's films. I'd say Heat has to be about my favorite, but this movie is very underrated.
