As an American, I'm honestly curious how this works. Clarkson's comments, even if they were in bad taste, are just speech. In America (technically) all speech cannot be infringed upon, you just have the freedom to be offended. Is this because of the BBC being nationalized entertainment?
Also, I've heard more horrible things than Clarkson (and Boyle's act) said on the BBC. Is it frequency that gets you in trouble? Are conservatives like Clarkson targetted more frequently?
@Raventoll Okay, well, as another American, let me explain something to you: "freedom of speech" does not imply any duty on the part of anyone else, including broadcasting companies, to share your speech if they don't want to.
@Raventoll I'm aware that a lot of our fellow Americans are as lamentably stupid as you, and think that "freedom of speech" represents some privilege that allows someone who is speaking to force others to broadcast their speech. But it doesn't. Here in the U.S. a broadcasting company would be every bit as entitled not to broadcast a show if they didn't want to. Because, of course, they also have freedom of speech.
@scalporf I'm not sure where the insults are coming from, so maybe it would help you if I rephrased the question? I'm not directly or indirectly insulting the BBC for their actions, I just want to know why, for instance, Clarkson's broadcast here went unaired because of something he said elsewhere which was hardly the most offensive thing I've heard here.
More to the point, the BBC tends to get sued for jokes (think Frankie Boyle). Isn't that a speech infringement?
If I were slightly paranoid (which I am) I would say that Stephen's remarks about "sortition" or random selection of members of government had much more to do with the episode being pulled than anything Clarkson said. Anyone with a braincell active knows he was trying to be funny on the One Show, not really his fault if he isn't that funny. (I find him funny though :D )
As a non-Clarkson fan, what was particularly offensive about his comments? I thought it was one of his funnier non-sequiturs. Sure, a little anti-Beeb, but since when does the BBC censor people because they mock the BBC? Frankie Boyle wouldn't have survived his first series of MtW.
The reason for the "Hit it with your teeth" bit is they don't think you've got the device plugged in, and if they ask you "is it plugged in" people will almost universally "yup" even if it isn't.
So, if you say something stupid you're not allowed to be seen saying something normal and funny anymore. I love the logic of outrage. Now I'm all for Clarkson just out of spite.
Never thought I'd defend Clarkson, but the joke wasn't even bad! he was poking fun at the BBCs need for impartiality. The people who took it out of context are to blame.
I love clarkson. I would love to meet the man and would bow down to his feet. He is a fantastic asset to this country and an all round entertainer. TopGear could not exist without him and as one of the biggest shows on the bbc network i think that says alot.
This coming from someone whos parents are both targeted by Clarksons 'inslult' and who has no job. THE GUY IS A LEGEND.
The only British tv star I know who would fit nicely within the Fox News framework. He's smug and uncaring about the environment, and the man is an openly-racist scumbag.
What Clarky said was just taken out of context, pasted across the news, replayed time and time again so that more people could get offened and got people who are shoved so far up their own arses a reason to spit their coffee at the television in the morning.
And I say that as a liberal, an environmentalist and as, what most would call, "one of those lefties", but Clarkson is still in my good books.
i dont understand why everyone got so bothered about clarkson to be honest, i didnt really give a shite and my father was one of the people protesting!
@jsabbath01 Yeah, same here. I interpreted it as him merely making fun of a lot of the BBC's rules in his usual extremely harsh way. He probably should have thought about the possible repercussions before he spoke, though.
@TheBankersNephew He probably did, chances are he used one of the greatest rules of comedy... Think about the situation, identify what you shouldn't say and then say it anyway.
Ignorant wankers like Clarkson are everything that is annoying about England today. I am just happy that i live in Italy. Low class, uneducated scum everywhere over there.
low class uneducated scum are the ones that protest council meetings wearing guy fawkes masks from v from vendetta because they dont fully understand anything other than "eat and hump"
clarksons comment was very funny, people are protesting with no cause.
@OskarHellstroem Basically he was on The One Show, and said, in relation to protesters, that they were brilliant cos nobody was around and he could drive all he wanted to. He then said that since they were on the BBC, he would have to balance that out and said he wanted them all lined up and show.
@TheBankersNephew Clarkson is a fucking idiot. He comes out with really stupid things and in the other two dickhead's with him being racist and generally ignorant. Funnily enough the other two aren't as bad on their own as they are with Clarkson.
@thenodfather Not quite, he just doesn't buy into political correctness and neither do the silent majority of the country because of the stigma attached to it by moronic loony left wingers.
30:40 i knew these years ago. i drive with my car seat lent backwards course it feels most comfortable. Most of my mates always took the piss. ha ha ha in your face guys. i was right.
