@bgj150 I certainly agree with you about music today! I think perhaps Lenny Kravitz was right when he sang "Rock and Roll is Dead". I guess some folks are just thankful that a band like KISS is at least still waving the rock and roll flag. But rock and roll is for the young. I certainly am not interested in seeing senior citizens playing hard rock music. At some point, you gotta cash in you chips and hope another band is waiting in the wings. Plus, add all the ridiculous merchandising KISS does, affixing their logo to every stupid product under the sun, it points to pure greed. Just my opinion.

So if you're alienating your diehard fans by having Tommy and Eric pretend to be Ace and Peter, it says that you really don't care what the fans think, you'd rather make money. Don't forget, Gene and Paul both swore up and down that the "Farwell Tour" was the absolute last KISS tour! Now, nearly a decade later and a second album in the works, they look greedy for milking the KISS name.

They dressed like the Beatles and played all the Beatles' songs perfectly, note for note. But guess what? THEY WEREN'T THE BEATLES! In other words, I don't want to see a watered-down version of something that once was great. I prefer to keep my memories of KISS from their best days!

@bgj150 I guess the way I see it, by dressing Tommy up as Ace and Eric up as Peter, Gene and Paul are trying to give the fans the illusion that the original band is intact. Maybe a better comparison would be the Beach Boys. Even today, the Beach Boys tour the world, but the only original member is Mike Love. Is it still the Beach Boys? Not to me. And KISS, with stand-in members, is "less-KISS" than the original lineup. Does that explain it better?

@bgj150 True enough. The merchandising machine was going full tilt almost from the beginning. In the early days, it was endearing - us fans always got a little something extra from the band. Whether it was a poster or a decal, there was always a bonus in the albums. I thought that was cool. But when they start putting out KISS coffins and MM's, it just starts to be less about rock and roll music and more about making cash. Especially since the musical output has been so lame - again, IMO!

@bgj150 I gotta believe that something else is brewing in terms of rock and roll. I still remember the late 70's when disco ruled the airwaves, and thinking rock and roll would never come back. Then punk came along and said: "You want a rock and roll attitude, here it is!" So perhaps something new and exciting is on the horizon. I agree with your about the 80's - so many classic albums! It was a great time for rock and roll! Let's just hope there's some kind of revival soon!!

@bgj150 Again, I must say that KISS' songwriting wasn't great in the 80's because they stop writing as a band. Instead, they brought in "hit-makers" like Desmond Child, Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance. So the music wasn't really "KISS" anymore. As far as "Sonic Boom" goes, I thought it was sub-par. There was a few okay tracks, but to me, it sounded like a bunch of throw-away songs from the past. But I'll give the new album a listen. I'm not optimistic about it though. Peace!

@bgj150 Well, Paul and Gene have always pumped up whomever was in the band at the time. They're even proned to cut up their former members, which isn't cool. Look, Tommy Thayer got a great gig. He was Gene's houseboy and ended up in the band. Now, he gets to "play" Ace every night. While I think it's a huge slap in the face to Ace, who he should respect, would you turn down that job? But as far as originality goes, Tommy is not original. He an Ace copy-cat, at best.
i love ace .. cant knock him. he had a certain flair 2 his playing...love him always will , wish he was still with them..keep in mind the guys that came right after , vinny vincent, and for one album b4 he got sick mark st john both were much more technical and way more schooled than ace...if u listen 2 all of creatures and all of lets say animalize..alot of those leads are awesome..i remember gene talking about how good vinny was b4 there personalitys clashed and kicked him out.
@bgj150 Vinnie was a trainwreck, but a talented player. Mark St. John and Bruce Kulick were talented players, but it was a very different band by that point. The thing I liked best about Ace was that he wasn't as "technical". He played hard rock and he played it from the heart. Sure, Vinnie and the others could play faster, but Ace fit the original KISS music perfectly.

@bgj150 I agree - Eric is a great rock and roll drummer. So why not give him his own persona in the band? They did it for Eric Carr and the fans accepted it. I would rather that than seeing Eric pretending to be Peter Criss. And I agree with you about Peter being a great drummer. I think he brought something different to KISS, which is exactly what KISS was all about - something different. I still listen to "100,000 Years" on "Alive" and love that solo.
I'll respectfully disagree. Many of their early songs were not just power chords. Take a crack at "Parasite" some day, if you like to shred! Even "Deuce" has some complex leads. I just think KISS lost all of their originality by the 80's. You made my point for me - in ht later 70's, everyone was doing disco, so KISS did it, too. In the 80's, everyone was "dabbling" in the EVH-style, so KISS did that. I first loved KIS because they were like no other band. By '84, whey were like every other band!

Oh, so Paul says Desmond Child is great and that makes him great? Why don't you take a look at the setlist KISS are playing almost every night. How many songs from the 80's are included? "Lick it Up" and "Heaven's On Fire"-that's it! No one's interested in hearing "Who Wants to be Lonely" or "Uh All Night". Know why? Because even KISS knows those songs suck! 85% of the setlist is pre-78. Fact! 80's KISS blows! KISS knows their best years were pre-78. That's why they rely on it to carry the show.

@bgj150 Actually, I saw KISS 17 times between 1974 and 1978 alone! The next time I saw them was in 1990, and that was because Eric was sick and I wanted to see him live. I was at four shows for the Reunion Tour, two for Psycho Circus and three for the "Farewell" Tour - that makes 24 shows! I won't go see them again, not with the two imposters pretending to be Ace and Peter! Dude, I could pick up ANY Kiss song on the guitar in less than five minutes. The stuff from the 80's is a piece of cake!

@bgj150 I certainly agree with you about music today! I think perhaps Lenny Kravitz was right when he sang "Rock and Roll is Dead". I guess some folks are just thankful that a band like KISS is at least still waving the rock and roll flag. But rock and roll is for the young. I certainly am not interested in seeing senior citizens playing hard rock music. At some point, you gotta cash in you chips and hope another band is waiting in the wings. Unfortunately for us that other band hasn't appeared.

@bgj150 A good point. There's something to be said for a band that wants to please the fans. But is that really the case? Or is it a case of just want to make more bank? If so many fans are opposed to Tommy and Eric pretending to be Ace and Peter (and I'm certainly not alone in that), then the reason must be greed. Plus, add all the ridiculous merchandising KISS does, affixing their logo to every stupid product under the sun, it points to pure greed. Just my opinion.

So if you're alienating your diehard fans by having Tommy and Eric pretend to be Ace and Peter, it says that you really don't care what the fans think, you'd rather make money. Don't forget, Gene and Paul both swore up and down that the "Farwell Tour" was the absolute last KISS tour! Now, nearly a decade later and a second album in the works, they look greedy for milking the KISS name.

They dressed like the Beatles and played all the Beatles' songs perfectly, note for note. But guess what? THEY WEREN'T THE BEATLES! In other words, I don't want to see a watered-down version of something that once was great. I prefer to keep my memories of KISS from their best days!

@bgj150 I guess the way I see it, by dressing Tommy up as Ace and Eric up as Peter, Gene and Paul are trying to give the fans the illusion that the original band is intact. Maybe a better comparison would be the Beach Boys. Even today, the Beach Boys tour the world, but the only original member is Mike Love. Is it still the Beach Boys? Not to me. And KISS, with stand-in members, is "less-KISS" than the original lineup. Does that explain it better?

@bgj150 True enough. The merchandising machine was going full tilt almost from the beginning. In the early days, it was endearing - us fans always got a little something extra from the band. Whether it was a poster or a decal, there was always a bonus in the albums. I thought that was cool. But when they start putting out KISS coffins and MM's, it just starts to be less about rock and roll music and more about making cash. Especially since the musical output has been so lame - again, IMO!

@bgj150 I gotta believe that something else is brewing in terms of rock and roll. I still remember the late 70's when disco ruled the airwaves, and thinking rock and roll would never come back. Then punk came along and said: "You want a rock and roll attitude, here it is!" So perhaps something new and exciting is on the horizon. I agree with your about the 80's - so many classic albums! It was a great time for rock and roll! Let's just hope there's some kind of revival soon!!

@bgj150 Again, I must say that KISS' songwriting wasn't great in the 80's because they stop writing as a band. Instead, they brought in "hit-makers" like Desmond Child, Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance. So the music wasn't really "KISS" anymore. As far as "Sonic Boom" goes, I thought it was sub-par. There was a few okay tracks, but to me, it sounded like a bunch of throw-away songs from the past. But I'll give the new album a listen. I'm not optimistic about it though. Peace!

@bgj150 Well, Paul and Gene have always pumped up whomever was in the band at the time. They're even proned to cut up their former members, which isn't cool. Look, Tommy Thayer got a great gig. He was Gene's houseboy and ended up in the band. Now, he gets to "play" Ace every night. While I think it's a huge slap in the face to Ace, who he should respect, would you turn down that job? But as far as originality goes, Tommy is not original. He an Ace copy-cat, at best.

@bgj150 Vinnie was a trainwreck, but a talented player. Mark St. John and Bruce Kulick were talented players, but it was a very different band by that point. The thing I liked best about Ace was that he wasn't as "technical". He played hard rock and he played it from the heart. Sure, Vinnie and the others could play faster, but Ace fit the original KISS music perfectly.

@bgj150 I agree - Eric is a great rock and roll drummer. So why not give him his own persona in the band? They did it for Eric Carr and the fans accepted it. I would rather that than seeing Eric pretending to be Peter Criss. And I agree with you about Peter being a great drummer. I think he brought something different to KISS, which is exactly what KISS was all about - something different. I still listen to "100,000 Years" on "Alive" and love that solo.

I'll respectfully disagree. Many of their early songs were not just power chords. Take a crack at "Parasite" some day, if you like to shred! Even "Deuce" has some complex leads. I just think KISS lost all of their originality by the 80's. You made my point for me - in ht later 70's, everyone was doing disco, so KISS did it, too. In the 80's, everyone was "dabbling" in the EVH-style, so KISS did that. I first loved KIS because they were like no other band. By '84, whey were like every other band!

Oh, so Paul says Desmond Child is great and that makes him great? Why don't you take a look at the setlist KISS are playing almost every night. How many songs from the 80's are included? "Lick it Up" and "Heaven's On Fire"-that's it! No one's interested in hearing "Who Wants to be Lonely" or "Uh All Night". Know why? Because even KISS knows those songs suck! 85% of the setlist is pre-78. Fact! 80's KISS blows! KISS knows their best years were pre-78. That's why they rely on it to carry the show.

@bgj150 Actually, I saw KISS 17 times between 1974 and 1978 alone! The next time I saw them was in 1990, and that was because Eric was sick and I wanted to see him live. I was at four shows for the Reunion Tour, two for Psycho Circus and three for the "Farewell" Tour - that makes 24 shows! I won't go see them again, not with the two imposters pretending to be Ace and Peter! Dude, I could pick up ANY Kiss song on the guitar in less than five minutes. The stuff from the 80's is a piece of cake!

@TheRevengeOfMoth WELL I GOTTA AGREE WITH U THERE AS FAR AS TOMMY THAYER/ ERIC SINGER IS CONCERNED...THEM WEARING PETER/ ACES CHARACTERS BOTHERS ME AND ALOT OF OTHER FANS AS WELL...EVERYONE IS ENTITLED TO THERE OWN OPINION AND I RESPECT YOURS.., JUST LAST YEAR I SAW THEM TWICE AND IT WAS THE BEST I EVER SAW THEM BELIEVE IT OR NOT.THEY HAVENT SLOWED A BIT...ALWAYS TRY 2 PLEASE THE FANS AND DOING SOMETHING NEW..PUSHING THE ENVOLOPE MORE N MORE AS FAR AS STAGE SHOW IS CONCERNED..
