Cannot compare. The only thing they share in common is their absolute uniqueness, which is beauty in itself. Joanna writes, composes and performs with a Harp. <3

She really doesn't need all that orchestral rubbish. I like both listening and watching her solo and feel that these collaborative arrangements just serve to distract and dilute the impact of her unique style. It's like listening to an orchestrated and choral arrangement of bolttleneck guitar Delta Blues .... it just ain't the same thing. I humbly suggest that she shuck off the band and entourage and get back to solo "one woman show" performances where her own unique style can shine.
Part of the magic of the entire album is the orchestral element, and is what made that album different from Milk-Eyed Mender, Walnut Whales, and Yarn and Glue.
I agree, I love her solo performance, but calling the violin pick and cello performances rubbish....well...
fucking awesome dude. i am very envious of you. i'm going to see her at the royal albert hall on the 28th sept but every live performance i see just blows me away. well done.
WHY DIDNT YOU RECORD THE WHOLE SONG??? I dont care if its 12 min long! You dropped the ball!

Now this is what I would have liked to see. Her performance in Sweden was awful.

fantastic. one critique -- why did you record the orchestra getting in tune? that could've been a couple more minutes of 'emily'.

I understand you didn't want to record all of it, but you could have recorded /some./

Actually on this performance, some parts here and there, reminded me of Tori Amos in style.
Again no comparison, as they are both unique but beautiful like peaches and pears.

Have you even heard Ys?

by the way, she wrote all those parts

I'm sure that all involved are excellent musicians.... I'm not about disrespecting their work. I'm just saying that I prefer Joanna Newsom solo.

I think Van Dyke Parks is actually responsible for the orchestrations on Ys

uh no... that was van dyke parks.

can anyone please tell me if she orchestrated it herself?

van dyke parks wrote the arrangements based on her own harp arrangement

@freekorps How funny. I was reminded of the Inara George album he collaborated with her on while listening to this album

...and she did back and forth with him on the material he submitted. Spoken more in sentiment I'm told than notation.

I was there, it rocked. the lights stayed like that the whole time so it was a tad sterile tho.

not as much of a let down as the video on your profile, which serves no purpose whatsoever. 24 seconds of nothing. i figure its better than nothing
