I like Grape-Nuts, but they hurt my teeth. It gets its name because it resembles grape seeds, hence grape "nuts". It actually is a good tasting cereal.
@sxymelissannt They're called "Grape Nuts" because the sweet taste was thought to be plant sugars, also called "grape sugar", and "nuts" because the crunched like them.
Grape Nuts were good, though it seemed like Euell Gibbons would put ANYTHING in his mouth, like pine trees (though actually there are some parts of a pine tree that are QUITE edible (and tasty).
Please do some real research before saying how Euell Gibbons died. He had Marfan Syndrome, which is a genetic disease that affects connective tissue. He was a very tall guy, 6'7", which is one of the characteristics of this disease. He died of aortic complications due to this disease. It had NOTHING to do with diet.
As to the pine tree quote, the Carol Burnett Show did a spoof of him, and that is where that line came from. I remember that part of the skit.

As to the pine tree quote, Tim Conway of the Carol Burnett Show did a spoof of him, and that is where that line came from. I remember that part of the skit.
Just noting that a correction appears after this, since I only recall the skit, but not who actually said the line on the show. Another poster said it was John Byner, which may be indeed correct.
Yeah, I remember cackling like an idiot (along with everyone else) at his pine cone version of the GrapeNuts commercial. It wasn't until I got older that I heard a friend of mine talk about his book "Stalking The Wild Asparagus". I read most of it and WOW, what an awakening! This gentle man was truly a master of wild foods, a gentle spirit, and an endlessly curious naturalist. God bless him and READ HIS BOOK!
Let them soak a little in milk or water and they are very good. Many people eat Grape-Nuts served hot. I like the crunchiness, but it isn't for everyone.
You all know that grape nuts is basically a bowl of bread crumbs, right?
They bake these chunky loaves of darkish bread and bust it into little nuggets. Then they spray on the usual mix of vitamins and minerals that most box cereals get.
So other than not having much added sugar, they're not really much of a health food, just a big bowl of high glycemic carbs and some fiber. The fiber's good for you, I suppose.
Euell's first Grape-Nuts commercial opened with "Hi I'm Euell Gibbons. Ever eat a pine tree? some part are edible". Soon after Johnny Carson was referencing Gibbons' commercials in his Tonight Show monologues and in '74 he was the subject of a feature article in the National Geographic magazine.
Ah yeah I almost forgot Because of Euell's commercial I bought a box of Grape Nuts to try. After one bowl, I thought I was going to chip a tooth on the rock hard nuggets and threw the entire box away.
listen, no joke, this man is my great uncle. He maried one of my grandfather's sisters, her maiden name was fryer...i think its kinda sweet that i can watch his commercials on youtube
There were several of these Euell Gibbons commercials for Grape-Nuts. One of them had the quote, "Did you ever eat a tree? Some parts are edible." (No, this was not the Mel Brooks quote referenced by student1799--this one was really Euell.) You can imagine how, during the uptight-into-cool period of the 1970s, this quickly morphed into "Did you ever eat your wife? Some parts are edible."
I remember reading Euell's obituary. It staited that he died of natural causes. What did they expect. As for Grape Nuts I eat them with a lot of sugar, just for spite.
I have a solution for that. Pour them over your yogurt, and even if you take ten minutes to eat it the Grape Nuts don't ever get soggy. I also add banana, strawberry, or mango slices to it. I eat this every morning and could live off it if I had to.
I also have a solution for that. Use powdered milk instead of the liquid stuff, the grapenuts will stay crunchy forever! Really though, they need to invent a milk resistant coating so they don't get soggy and turn into boogers.
if the taste of wild hickory nuts is the taste that turns you on, you can get a box of grape nuts for about 5 bucks, or you can get all the wild hickory nuts you want for nothing
Man, this brings back memories. Gibbons was all into health food but I guess health food ain't all that healthy because he died at 64. According to some sources, he chain smoked. Ironic, isn't it?
He died of a genetic disease that affected the connective tissues in his heart. I'm not sure any amount of health food would have saved him from that.
I'm old enough to remember when this commercial was on TV. But like many people, I remembered it wrong and thought he'd said "Many parts of a pine tree are edible."
Personally, I'd like to see one of the Carol Burnett skits where Tim Conway does a (predictably) demented take on Gibbons. One of the small joys of growing up in the 70s.
'Twas actually John Byner who did that bizarro impression of Mr. Gibbons, in a sketch of TV commercial parodies on the Oct. 6, 1973 "Carol Burnett Show." It can be found within:
I remember this commercial. It was so frequent on the tube it finally became a joke. They hammered it home. Euell probably sold a couple of million boxes of grape-nuts. I wonder how much he got paid.
The man cut off that cat-tail like he knew exactly what he was doing and I expect he did.
I have always wanted to see this. Friends have spoken of it with enthusiasm. At long last. Thank you! Gibbons was quite a character. It's a good thing we have a video record for posterity.

So I added in some honey bunches of oats and it tasted better. I think Grape Nuts is a condiment for other cereals since it has a very bland flavor.

rockyPants4000 2 years ago
Well, my understanding is that they bake it a second time after making the nuggets, but yeah, you're right on the money. I kind of like it anyway.
Fun fact: The reason it's called Grape Nuts is that the inventors of the recipe were convinced the process produced grape sugars in the cereal.
3zy 2 years ago
Yeah, I've always liked it too, a lot of people don't though.
Problem is I can't eat it on a diet, it's actually quite fattening, not a heath food.

@3zy "Grape sugar" being a bit of nomenclature applied at the time to any sugar made from fruit. Today, we actually term it "glucose".
