It was not that easy! When I ran my finger on it with soapy water, the caulked surface bulged up and tore out the stuff behind it. I think caulk dries sort of quickly. And the wetness of the bleach messes with the seal.
Um... I love you sir. LOL :) The caulking around my tub looked awful so I wanted to redo it but I wanted it to look nice and clean. The dish soap and water worked beautifuly. Thanks so much. :)
Me and my dad just did this to are bathtub and its nice of the dumbass who built the house to put the Caulk out so far all I had to do was rip it off with my finger but we got it fixed and looking good now.
He makes it look so easy, is it really this easy?? Our apartment shower did not have new caulking and now its all falling out and moldy, and I doubt that the landlord will do anything with it..it would just turn into the blame game....but anyway, looks easy enough for me to do :) thanks for the video.....
Ron you're amazing! I used your video and took all that old crap out and lay down new caulk and it worked. Every aspect of it worked, including rubbing out extra moldy areas with the bleach AND using the soapy water to make a clean line of caulk. I went to Home Depot and bought a small hand squeezed tube of Caulk for about $4. I'm female and completed the work on my own without feeling intimidated. Thanks for your help!
I bought a tube the other day and it kept coming out from the back. I had a hard time getting it to come out. I cut the tip and noticed a bubble in the tube preventing it from coming out. Are the caulking tubes like this or was it faulty?
my problem is that the new caulking won't stick because of the silicone residue, soapy water doesn't seem to clean it off so it must be redone yearly.
thanks for the tip about the dish soap,I've been having fun picking the silicone off my fingers like the white glue we used to use when we were kids....
I also found your video on grout refreshing to be very handy. I renovate apartment units, and I find it's faster to refresh the grout and replace the caulking than it is to clean the grout and caulking. Looks better, too.
Ron Hazeltine is the best by far. Watch his "Housecalls" TV program or subscribe to his website. I am a big fan. He is detail oriented and gives tips that actually are smart, that work and that are often overlooked by the myriads of so-called handy "professionals" that post on YouTube. It shows to go ya that ignorance of one's subject does not seem to deter those bound and determined to show what they don't know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Make sure(as he said) you get a kind that washes off with soap and water. I though I was being smart and getting DAP 3.0 because it was made for the outdoors so I though it would work great in the shower. I ended up washing my hands in acetone. Not fun. I also recommend waring gloves.
my co worker told me to wet my finger with saliva so it will slide nicely on the silicone......it worked because we were only doing small job that time....im glad i saw this video...now i dont have to worry about running out of saliva if they will ask me to do a big job...LOL
Saliva ... now that's a new one. Here are a couple of other options. Warm water to which a couple of drops of dish washing detergent has been added. Also, isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol or denatured alcohol will work.
Oh my goodness thank you so much! Our bathroom had horrible caulking when we first moved it, so it felt like we were doomed from the start, lol. Thank you!
Ok, the caulking (basically same brand/type listed in the vid) only would open in the back, wouldn't come out the front pointy part! I clipped off the tip - not sure what I did wrong. Dirs said "break the seal."
Also, due to time constraints, tried to caulk with my hands and the tape and now it's hard to get off my hands...
Please advise...
PS: I know I'm a total rookie chick & this is the job of my slumlord, but I wish I'd have known I needed masking tape in advance.
with some caulks, you have to stick something down that tip you cut off. Many caulking guns have a little wire attachment for this purpose. I good size nail will work too. Then you are finished, you can stick the nail back in the tip as a way to keep it from drying out.
No offence but you are a rookie. You should have viewed some of these videos before doing the job. Breaking the seal means to take a long thin device like a very large spike or a thin screwdriver and after cutting off the tip of the tube you insert it all the way in until it pierce the membrane that keeps the caulk from drying out when on the shelf. Then CLEAN off the screwdrive with a rag and pump the caulk up to the tip. Without piercing, you caused so much pressure that it blew backwards
ps, you don't need masking tape unless your really unsure of how to wipe a clean bead with a wet finger. WATCHY THE VIDEOS!!!
But, practice makes perfect. You are learning the best way. by experience. Soon you'll be showing others. Good luck. A word to the Wise is usually sufficient but how many of us actually listen and understand? Hard knocks is powerful teacher. Teaches you fast what not to do. So even a negative can turn out to be a positive. Parents don't rob your children!
Thank you!!! I've an old bathtub whose caulk has mildewed and cracked and I was worried it would be difficult to repair. Thanks to you I now feel confident I can do it.
Thank you for the video! My landlord is a BUM who won't recaulk our tub after paying rent on time for five years! What a jerk! But now I can do it myself :)
how do you keep the new caulking from mildewing?
NathanielFTW 3 weeks ago
Terrible silicone line, went 10mm up the tiles. That will peel off and look ugly in a few days. Get a proper silicone tool rather than using fingers.

Waw thank you very much, can we use the same product for the window?
I suffer from a lot of mold around my window specially in my bed room, however, it is a double glazing window!
