This is one of those things where you family members sings it around a fire, you know her voice is a chipmonk, so you say, "Ah thats nice and walk off"
Adored Reeltime Travelers, adore Martha Scanlon. Had the great good fortune to see her perform this for the first time at a house concert. So looking forward to anything I can get from this woman.
I saw Martha in Santa Barbara's, "Sings Like Hell" series over a year ago. She sang Seeds of the Pine accompanied by a pedal steel guitar. It was ghostly and amazing in a dark room. She did a lovely set and I became a fan.
Absolutely gorgeous.... I'm a composer who's working on a film right now, and i can't tell you what an inspiration this piece is for me with the content i'm working with... Instant fan here... and thank you for the inspiration.
In this day can you believe this is the first Itune purchase I have ever made? I wish I could understand her lyrics. Back to back listening have granted me some but not all. I somehow get lost in the melody and the outstanding banjo backup.
here are the words josborne26. this may take a few comments. rains fell cold through june, grass is up to my thigh, say if it dries up it will burn just like the moon, say it opens up the seeds of the pine, i only want to dream about you, the dollar that could spend but i should save, just to see my fingers in your hair, the golden wheat around us where we lay, you're a slow ride down a country mile, you're the smell of apple pie to the blind, you're the last night on a july western sky,...
youre the center of the watermelon youre a sweet sweet smile cottonwood a-shakin in the breeze surrounded by a starry sky easy to forget the things we need easy to walk around mostly blind i could tell you not to come in from the storm i could tell you not to be so kind i could tell you not to close the door i could say i never wanted you for mine (chorus)
One addition" "the golden wheat around and beneath us where we lay." I love this, too. I first heard it on KBOO's Pickathon CD and then Googled to find out more about Martha Scanlan and the piece. What luck to find a video. It's magical.
If like me you have watched this constantly for days...I have discovered you can buy it from itunes for 79p! This is a much better version than the one on the album (although the album is very good and ought to be in your collection). I hope these two play together for many years to come!
It just doesn't get any better in my book. I have watched this vid countless times, fallen asleep at my keyboard with it replaying over & over. Yet every time I come back, it still wants to make my cry cause it's so beautiful, and cause I wasn't there.
amazing song! was blown away the first time i saw her preform it at merlefest's midnight jam last year, and took me almost a year to find it! amazing music!

@cvchestnut, just read back in comments a bit. That's Roy Andrade, who played with Martha in the MOST excellent band, Reel Time Travelers.

Great video - Martha's singing voice is so fragile and beautiful. The banjo player is her former Reeltime Travelers colleague Roy Andrade.
