  • Talk about a blast from the past, first "record" i ever bought.

  • I saw the live version of 'aint half hot mum' in Bournemouth in 1979, marvellous.

  • i would hate to have been born too late to enjoy this people born now dont seem to get it why ,i love it ,would not be as good without Windsor

  • serent major Windsor Davies and Don Estell magic

  • Quality song and very well sung by Don Estelle. I think he did have some vocal training and it shows. I have one of his LP's somewhere, the one with Paper Doll on. It's a pity that it wasn't possible to accept Don as a singer apart from the comedy, because he had such a fine voice. I'm afraid too many people judge the appearance rather than the substance. I wish I'd have seen him in the shopping centres, I'd have bought his CDs. Windsor Davies is a very good comedy actor, too.

  • Those were the days. What a fine voice the late Don Estelle had. Partnered by Windsor Davies, they made a distictive duo, with Davies providing the comic element and yet allowing Don's singing talent to shine. A song that is as fresh today as it was 36 years ago, thanks to the performances of these two stars.

  • Ended up selling copies of his CD's in shopping centres, still dressing up in his Lofty gear, to an audience who largely had no idea who he was (and those who did still didn't buy the CDs). Rather sad really.

Windsor Davies was completely superfluous in this. And wasn't particularly funny in the series, even.

  • @StanPomeray yes i saw him in my local coop and it was sad god bless him RIP

  • @StanPomeray Just because he ended up busking in shopping centres doesn't mean to say he wasn't talented. He had a classy tenor singing voice and it's a shame that because of his looks he was never able to make the most of it.

As for Windsor Davies, he's taking the bass voice part from the Ink Spots arrangement of the song and isn't superfluous as you suggest. Yes it could have been done by someone else, but as a spin-off from a very popular sitcom this is a class act.

  • @GrezH When did I say that Don Estelle had no talent?? I said it was sad he ended up having to sing in shopping centres and being largely ignored by passers by, which he was, at least when I saw him in the Broadway Centre in Bexleyheath. And what I said was that Windsor Davies (if it really was him singing, which I doubt, personally) was superfluous in this recording principally because Estelle's voice was so good.

    Actually.

  • @StanPomeray In that case I apologise for misunderstanding your post and if I offended you in any way. It was Windsor Davies on the recording, and this is a very different recording from the single version (which can be found elsewhere on youtube.) The lead vocals and talking were most probably performed 'live' on the show because lip-syncing to talking is incrediblt difficult ans WDs performance is spot-on.

    Apologies again. Grez

  • thank you for this,i am lofty but a 6`7 lofty

  • Don Estelle looked a comical little guy next to Windsor Davies, but his voice blows me away, pure class

  • god bless you Lofty xx

  • What a voice ! Estelle rocks !

What a voice ! Davies is just brilliant ?

  • WoW- What a voice - What a performance by Don Estelle And Windsor Davies - Two brilliant performers. It’s a pity that we didn’t see more of Don Estelle in Dad's Army. I agree with Ammers0211. Music (noise) of today is boring and without life or smiles. And to be honest, we don’t have the same calibre of actors anymore.

  • What a great voice Don Estelle has.

  • I Agree. We have lost something. Why do musicians not make music for fun nowadays. The world is miserable enough!

  • What a truly magnificent voice the guy had. And Windsor Davies is comedy gold in this clip. Makes me laugh every time.

  • My friend said I had to checkout your video

  • Don Estelle's vocal performance on this is definately up with the Ink Spots version. If he wasnt a comedy actor his vocal talent would have been taken more seriously. A very talented man from a time when real talent was more common

  • Don Estelle had a lovely voice. RIP.

  • Class

  • Don Estelle was an amazing talent-Windsor Davies is actually a good bass baritone (when he sings properly)

  • Absolutely enchanting.

  • bring back the B O, B O Y S boys to entertain you, land of hope and glory.............

  • just pure classic comedy, the most wonderful of its kind, totally agree with the other comment.

  • Windsor Davies should have been Britain's Bruce Willis

  • don estelle amazing voice

  • A beautiful voice and a great comic...

  • Comment removed

  • My mum always used to go on about how she wished Don Estelle was better-looking.

  • what an AMAZING voice....

  • i really loved this show.

i never saw this, and i,m blown away!

what a beautiful song and voice, the good old days sigh

  • what a fantastic comic performance by windsor davies- you can't teach that!

  • what a voice this man had don that is xxx

  • Windsor Davies missed his calling as a bass baritone. He could have been a full time singer with his rich, booming voice instead of a comic actor.

  • So cool. Love these oldies.

  • @Dynamitebaiter

Like you would know you prat.

  • Quality i remember going to see them live at a show they did in Felixstowe with the rest of the cocert party which must of been in the late 70's. Managed to go back stage and get Windsors autograph as well. Wish i knew where it was now. Great times great video thanks for posting it...

  • christ, i didnt realise how long ago this was a huge hit .time goes so fast.

  • Perfect pitch too even without music.

  • Amazing voice on Don, singing all his life to the very end. Dead nice bloke too

  • Soo Goooood!!!

  • Last I heard of Don was several years ago, a friend saw him busking in Stourbridge

  • I think he passed away in 2003.

  • Yeah he did, he was busking up until his death :-(,,,,,, What a voice

  • i had completely forgotten about this, fantastic to see it. obviously it aint half hot mum is much too un pc for todays generation, and all the better for it!!

  • Dude, it cut off before the end.

  • An Underated Classic.

    Love This.

  • Indeed! I have a feeling that Don Estelle was a trained opera singer

  • No! he wasn't. He was a Big band singer. He worked with all the great British Bands during and just after the war. RIP Don thank you.

  • Brilliant~!!!!

  • Windsor Davies is fantastic!

  • @Gruxxan As is Don Estelle , what a duo with this song.

  • i will not ave gossip in this jungle.

  • a blast from the past . its bringin back so many memories aint half hot mum lol ..touch o class

  • I remember watching this, fantastic - so funny.

  • Wow this guy can really sing unlike most of todays lipsinc artist.

  • I think he is miming though.

  • naa its him singing

  • You're both right. They are miming in this clip but those really are their voices on the record. Everybody mimed on Top of the Pops in those days.

  • incredible voice, never recieved the recognition it deserved

  • Don had the recognition of being the vocalist on the 4th best selling single in 1975 and the recoginition of being number 1

for 3 weeks. These are achievements and recognitions most chart artists can only dream of.

  • Love this song. Carol x

  • Cool prog but its never replayed anymore , its prob due to it not being politically correct now:(

  • Great stuff

  • a great tune from the seventies, bring back this sit-com !

  • what a great voice.sadly missed
