Quality song and very well sung by Don Estelle. I think he did have some vocal training and it shows. I have one of his LP's somewhere, the one with Paper Doll on. It's a pity that it wasn't possible to accept Don as a singer apart from the comedy, because he had such a fine voice. I'm afraid too many people judge the appearance rather than the substance. I wish I'd have seen him in the shopping centres, I'd have bought his CDs. Windsor Davies is a very good comedy actor, too.
Those were the days. What a fine voice the late Don Estelle had. Partnered by Windsor Davies, they made a distictive duo, with Davies providing the comic element and yet allowing Don's singing talent to shine. A song that is as fresh today as it was 36 years ago, thanks to the performances of these two stars.
Ended up selling copies of his CD's in shopping centres, still dressing up in his Lofty gear, to an audience who largely had no idea who he was (and those who did still didn't buy the CDs). Rather sad really.
Windsor Davies was completely superfluous in this. And wasn't particularly funny in the series, even.
@StanPomeray Just because he ended up busking in shopping centres doesn't mean to say he wasn't talented. He had a classy tenor singing voice and it's a shame that because of his looks he was never able to make the most of it.
As for Windsor Davies, he's taking the bass voice part from the Ink Spots arrangement of the song and isn't superfluous as you suggest. Yes it could have been done by someone else, but as a spin-off from a very popular sitcom this is a class act.
@GrezH When did I say that Don Estelle had no talent?? I said it was sad he ended up having to sing in shopping centres and being largely ignored by passers by, which he was, at least when I saw him in the Broadway Centre in Bexleyheath. And what I said was that Windsor Davies (if it really was him singing, which I doubt, personally) was superfluous in this recording principally because Estelle's voice was so good.
@StanPomeray In that case I apologise for misunderstanding your post and if I offended you in any way. It was Windsor Davies on the recording, and this is a very different recording from the single version (which can be found elsewhere on youtube.) The lead vocals and talking were most probably performed 'live' on the show because lip-syncing to talking is incrediblt difficult ans WDs performance is spot-on.
WoW- What a voice - What a performance by Don Estelle And Windsor Davies - Two brilliant performers. It’s a pity that we didn’t see more of Don Estelle in Dad's Army. I agree with Ammers0211. Music (noise) of today is boring and without life or smiles. And to be honest, we don’t have the same calibre of actors anymore.
Don Estelle's vocal performance on this is definately up with the Ink Spots version. If he wasnt a comedy actor his vocal talent would have been taken more seriously. A very talented man from a time when real talent was more common
Quality i remember going to see them live at a show they did in Felixstowe with the rest of the cocert party which must of been in the late 70's. Managed to go back stage and get Windsors autograph as well. Wish i knew where it was now. Great times great video thanks for posting it...
pure class, all the way...can anyone listen to this song and honestly say, with hand on heart, that we have not lost something of ourselves in this modern world.
i had completely forgotten about this, fantastic to see it. obviously it aint half hot mum is much too un pc for todays generation, and all the better for it!!

I Agree. We have lost something. Why do musicians not make music for fun nowadays. The world is miserable enough!

Windsor Davies missed his calling as a bass baritone. He could have been a full time singer with his rich, booming voice instead of a comic actor.

for 3 weeks. These are achievements and recognitions most chart artists can only dream of.
