In 1936, over 12,000 people died in the US from heat related drought compared to 22 blamed deaths in 2011.The Texas Forest Service's info on these fires said most were suspected arson events.

Perhaps fewer people die because we're much better equipped to deal with disasters - for example, how many people in 1936 had air conditioning? Not many, since residential sales of air conditioners weren't substantial until the 1950's. And while there may have been other causes for the wildfires, the drought is what made them spread so drastically.
Our so-called "economy"-is precisely what is causing this.
