  • I used my microphone for the last comment. excuse they silly composition. I have seen several turbines I will by actually exploding when the braking system failed. also several fires. but the bird killing and the ice throws are very much a big concern. sometimes it is better to think the plan before you work the plan.

  • I would never house call of such problems unless I had been involved in the design and situation of the gennies. I can see that is it is definitely a problem from the standpoint of aesthetics. my concern could be catastrophic failure but I also understand how extreme changes in light can even be damaging, especially for kids subject to epilepsy. even the video games have been altered to minimize that effect. my heart goes out to you people.

  • Thanks for the video, sorry about the windmill. The benefits do not outweigh the the downside of windmills. I do not support governments wasting time or money on them. A push to eliminate the wasted electricity found in light pollution, would negate the need for green energy. The electrical grid is based on consumer demand, which is not an appropriate use of green energy.

  • And how many mins a day does this occur? I have a west facing window that the sun shines into every afternoon. It makes it hot in my living room. Wanna know what I do about it? Pull the curtain.

Once I hurt my wrist pulling the curtain. It didn't feel good.

  • sad to see . is there a video that shows the problem from the other direction i.e, into the sun and how close the turbine is?

  • Phil, thank you for posting your argument in such a reasonable manner, and for expecting reasonable behavior from people posting comments.

I can see that flicker would be quite annoying at times. What would you say the average duration of flicker in your home is each day? I'm very much in favor of wind farms, and I live in Texas where we have good settings for them. I'd like to see minimal impact from them, however. Like you said, done right.

  • @MrMeddled Your a fucking idiot. Sorry Phil.

Why would you bother calling me a pussy?

    You dirty fucking troll.

  • Thats looks rough man. I wouldn't want to live there. I have a headache from watching the video!

  • No company has the right to negatively affect a homeowner's quality of life. The end (green energy) does not justify the means. Our community has three companies knocking on the door, trying to tell us we "have to accept wind energy because President Obama says so". Hope Excelon has lots of money for law suits, because we're not going to bow down to their threats, or Obama's fraud-proven "evidence" of global warming.

  • normaly the windmill should by switcht of in holland and belgium the put on cencors to switcht of by the low sun

hope for you that this is rare

when your epileptic the is criminal

  • thanks for showing this video. wind power is the future, but we have to solve these problems just like any other. no doubt 1000 ft east or west of a turbine isn't quite enough.

  • For all those that watch this please do not think this is normal for wind developments - wind opponents will try to mislead and scaremonger you over this - don't be fooled!

To the resident: I sympathise with you, I really do. It is also encouraging that you have responded to comments below with dignity and consideration.

  • That would be reaaallly annoying

  • yaaaa a flicker vid without disabled comments.....mabe you shuld move next to a cole fiire plant,or a nuke farm,,,,luccky u dont have epalepsy ...can only plese some of the people some of the time,..make your own power,,,,, lern to blink at the right time, just be thankfull w e are trying to change,,,,move on go and skip the flicker and get fit.

  • I work for a developer - we perform a shadow flicker study for every new windfarm once land has been acquired and turbine siting is being finalized. There are guidelines on the number of hours of shadow flicker per year that are acceptable, and the author does not mention if these were followed. Keep in mind that flicker depends on the season, time of day and wind direction. Eliminating shadow flicker completely greatly restricts land available and should not be a goal in development.

  • Thats bullshit!....Id be pissed if I had to live with that....Who the hell would buy that house if you wanted to leave....you wouldnt be able to show the house during the shadow time frame

  • His voice sounds really good. I bet his bill is more attractive though. That shadow is annoying and i'm thinking do your community vote where to put the windmill? If you voted to put it in your backyard then' yeah' your stuck with it!

  • have the dogs ever chase the flicker? i think i would pack my shit and get out of there that would drive me nuts.

  • Respectfully when someone post a video on YouTube they have the absolute right to control the content of the video. I take exception with attempts to control and censor how people rspond in a post. Your attempt to control my free speech in using the term "idiot" in response to another poster is both offensive and an attempt at censorship. You should consider refraining from posting videos if you're unwilling to accept comments. I stand by my comment. The poster is an "idiot".

  • One cant disagree that the flicker is a pin in the ass but it seems as though the only soultion in to have a study performed that indicates what time of the day and year the local homes are affected by this and have a patition started to have them parked for that time period. Its an issue that I could see going to congress and an official law requiring this. Get the ball rolling

  • skierplaterandy-Phil's dog may not mind the evening flicker, but my dog and my 4 horses certainly do mind the morning flicker which hits my property 2500' from these same turbines! My dog refuses to be outside and my horses will walk away from their morning grain to flee to the tiny corner in their field which is not affected. Anyone that owns horses knows that it is no small feet to convince your horses to walk away from their grain!

As to your "brilliant" solution of

  • It's comical you idiot asking people who built at that location prior to windmills being built to draw blinds and turn on a light in their homes to lessen the effect of the shadow. Amazing you actually promote that as a solution to their problem. Sun rises in the east. Most of the day moves south towards west. Go stand near those windmills and tell us it's a two hour event. Those windmills turn frequently. They're not stationary as you think. Would you suggest they also use earplugs?

  • Please let someone express their views with calling them an idiot.

    Thanks,

    Phil Bloomstein

  • you will find anything to complain about this mill huh? its a shadow! who gives a damn? if its that bad turn on a light, or close blinds. that windmill can power several million of them!

your dogs dont seem to mind the mill at all, and they have better senses then you and I, so that must mean its fine.

  • My guess is you don't own property off the Mitchell Road? You don't have a clue what it's like to live 1,000 feet from these windmills. Even the tower manufacturer recommends not installing these within 3,000 feet MINIMUM from a residence. Guess they don't know what they're talking about even though they research, design and build these. You're recommendation about drawing blinds or turning on a light if the shadow bothers anyone borders on comicable at best. What a completely dumb comment!

  • comical? how is it comical? if you draw blinds and turn on a light then you dont see the difference in light from the mill. i dont see the big deal of having a moving shadow for like 2 hours in the morning or whatever it is. because the sun doesnt shine in that direction all day.

  • As I was returning from work late this afternoon, driving east down KMD in Waterville, I noticed what looked like windmills on the horizon. I think I saw maybe 1 or 2, would these be the same ones?

  • Looking east on KMD at it's highest point either near J&S, I-95 or Inland hospital you might see them but I'm not certain about visibilty at those locations. They're about 400 feet tall when a blade is at 12 o'clock. That's equal to a 40 story building. Imagine having that monster in your backyard like the folks off the Mitchell Road in Freedom do! We need this type of energy but there has to be reasonable tranquility with existing homes. This clearly was not the case in this instance.

  • Too much to live with. Especially the phased flicker at about 1:20 into the video (front of the house, I guess, and the kitchen area). The refrigerator/turbine sound comparison I could live with, if it wasn't so constant, but that flicker would have my head splitting and my eyes watering ALL the time.

  • It's not even all the windows at once, which would be bad enough; it's first one then another - that would give me a headache!

  • I live about 15 miles away on a ridge in Winslow. I can see all three windmills. It's cool to see them on the horizon. On the other hand they are not in my backyard. I took a drive to see them up close. They are MASSIVE! I can sympathize with the Bloomstein's and others living off the Mitchell Road. The Bloomstein's and other abutters should be fairly compensated for the obvious devaluation of their properties. People should keep in mind this is their homes and they were there first.

  • OMG! OMG! Shadows ! you'll die ! it's the sky falling !! Tsss... get over it... It will only either be on the early morning or the late afternoon. Clouds makes shadows as well btw and trees too.

  • Mr Bloomstein turned down a buy-out before the construction of these wind turbines...

the turbines generate $200,000 for the towns tax base...I would think that helps a lot of folks with their taxes ?

  • I was never offered or turned down any buyout before the construction.

  • Phil ,Sorry about that...I guess it was your neigbor on sibley rd that got that offer..,

  • It is outrageous that people should have their lives ruined by shadow flicker, constant noise exceeding db levels, and vibroacoustic effects on health for a pitiful output of electricity. Watching this video gave me a headache!

  • You have a very beautiful home though!

  • that would drive me bananas

  • It's amazing how some people are willing to sacrifice some other persons' life of peace and tranquility so that they may continue unmitigated consumption. Land based windfarms in the populated eastern U.S. are a complete and total scam that will displace NO fossil fuel generation, but will line promoter's pockets with lots of $GREEN$ while causing much destruction to nature and communities.

  • Flicker is just one part of the problem of being so close to the turbines. The constant and often very loud noise is the major issue. Some of you will never accept the fact that we are as pro green and wind energy as you. We just want it done right, with proper setbacks and planning.

  • i understand...proper planning did not go into this project.

  • Hello!? They were lied to. It was going to be quiet and it was not going to be obtrusive. And, by the way you energy fascist, why don;t you go and have a look at what the energy company did to construct the access road for construction. They clear cut half the back side of tall hill of old growth forest to put their precious windmill up. Since you think it so neat, put one up in your backyard.

  • @UnityCollegeWestview Nuclear power is much cleaner and has minimal impact on the environment and landscape compared to ugly wind turbines.

  • Oh My God! Shadows! It's like, wow, clouds passing overhead! Imagine living next to an oil refinery my friend, I could think of a lot worse things to live next to. Sorry, but no sympathy here, get used to the future of power.

  • I work in the wind industry and we would never site a turbine closer than half a mile to a house for this very reason. Pretty irresponsible developers there.

  • Wow, Great info Phil. We would like to come over sometime and check it out. I thought the industry standard was 1100 feet to dwellings ? Did they get an EPA review ? Max's Dad

  • It would take quite a while to explain the extremely flawed permitting process. There are only three turbines, which is perhaps why the project had practically no oversight from the town. However the turbines are almost 400' tall and are located less than 400' from most of the abutters property lines. I'm sure we are stuck with them, but we remain hopeful the company will live up to its word. So far nieghbors and I have been the only ones monitoring the noise levels.

  • that looks horrible my friend... how many turbines are there?did you have an input into the planning process? is there a monitoring aspect to the project or are you stuck with them now?
