  • yeah you butchered the directors name

  • gong li was amazing

  • I really thought this was gonna be on "The Red Lanturn Corps"...that was what i was really looking foward too...*sigh* wasted 4:48 if my life

  • I think Zhang Yimou is pronounced like -"Jung Yeemow", and yes Raise the Red Lantern is a great film. You should check out "Red Sorghum" "Ju Dou" and "Too Live" aswell. All star Gong Li and directed by Zhang Yimou.

  • The word 'mistress' used in the film means mistress of the household and not mistress as in 'the other woman'

  • mistress as in madam loser

  • Well, 1920 is ancient china. its is not modern china, by any stretch of the imagination. The communist party came to power in 1949, 3 decades later, and advocated for women's rights (but it is true when the film came out the party denounced it).

I think the director want people to imagine what a person at that era would feel and act, therefore taking them, even chinese ppl today, to another world and culture. It might be a good social com in china, but bad understanding of china internationally

  • I love this movie.

Sorry but I thought you introduced yourself as Jack's Colon. I immediately thought you were doing a Fight Club riff.

    Great review, by the way.

  • Well, you did murder the pronunciation of "Zhang Yimou", but that's not important.

I agree that the movie is...well, fantastic. I definitely think more people should see it.

  • How do you pronounce him anyway?

  • I saw many movies but never one where the hero get insane.Even if the girl would die, it would imo more a happy ending have than this.

  • it'd understandable how someone would think it were ancient china but being chinese, it was quite apparent it wasn't that long ago just from the clothing and the way people looked and acted. just saw it, great film!

  • Yeah we are doing this film in English right now! It was AWFULLY translated but aside from that it was an excellent movie, and there was a lot of contrast in the movie.

  • It really is a fantastic movie, I just finished watching it ...for the second time! The first time when I was ...5, but all the details were still there, I remember every moment of it, especially the striking red lanterns!!!

  • were screening this film in class. i like the way that it was done, notice how everytning is centered in the shot. its fantastic!

  • I loved this movie. Five punches to the head and a cracked rib :)
