Any idea how this might be applied to an actual car. I'm looking to remove the chrome from my rims and paint where there was chrome. Any advice? My car is on my channel
My friend..i shall use only that kind of acetone like this you have or it doesn't matter if it;s from an other company and does it have any spacificate or just to be a 100% acetone whateve company?
@boskosgreg It should all be the same, as long as it just says acetone and not some special formulation with a buffer or odor-reducing compound or some other odd extra thing.
@steviegee333 Hell no. Try cola or alkaline solution in a electrolysis method or you can try 2 part water and 1 part muriatic or hydrochloric acid as a solution for removing chrome
I've seen some people on YouTube use easy-off I was wondering if that would be fine because it gets ride of the chrome but it dosent make it white it turns out to turn a light yellowish color and I want to dye the rims black
@crossmotto It definitely gets the chrome off. I'm not sure how well the surface will take a dye if the adhesive layer (the yellow stuff) hasn't come off, but I do believe that the EZ-Off method will allow dying. Just scrub it down well after soaking, and rinse it really well.
@crossmotto hi i try this method today on all 4 rims this is the best method u can use what u saw on the video its exlacty what ur going to get f.y.i do not be cheap its only 7 buck best methoh disregard my spelling thank and try it
@thelarsdude Yep! Just do like I did in my video on removing tires with acetone. The tires will come right off, and the chrome will be loosened at the same time. Just be sure to put the wheels back in the acetone after you take the tires off. Don't take them out & let them dry until you've finished removing the chrome.
@stephykamzy Do you mean a full-sized car with an actual metal-plated grille? I don't think so, I'm afraid. For that the cheapest route would be to take the time to sand all surfaces as best you can, clean & dry it, then use a metal primer -- first a very light, mist-like coat, then a couple medium coats for coverage.
@UltimateRCnetwork but if you think about it ,the grill of the car(rover 25) is in plastic so if it worked for the rc car i assumed it would with the grill because mehn sanding it is like stabbing your self in the eye thats if you using sand paper.....i read break fluid would do the job also but i don't know for sure well thanks mehn for your reply
@stephykamzy Problem is that acutal automotive applications use a different compound and it's a significantly thicker coat. It's definitely worth a try in a small area. If you want the chrome off no matter what, there's no harm in experimenting. Also try spray-on oven cleaner. In the US the product is called "Easy Off." and comes in a yellow can, sold near household cleaners like dish soap.
Nah I doubt it'd do much of anything to real metal plating. What I was dealing with here was the much thinner type of chrome plating used on small plastic parts.
Just use bleach

I would like to remove the chrome from my Slash wheels.
But, the tires are glued to the rims and I want to keep the tires on the rims.
Is there a way to remove the chrome and leave the glue and tires intact?

Is it true that chrome makes wheels brittle? Guy in the shop keeps telling me not to buy chrome wheels...

@Hobby331 it probably does make them brittle, i would just do as he said.

Hi,
Would Acetone remove chrome for metal engine cover?
The chrome is now flaking off, but rather than re-chroming it, I'd rather remove the chrome and spray it a different color.
