I was running upstream against a pretty heavy flow in this video. The overall trip was around 26 miles or so. When I returned I had perhaps maybe only a 1/2 gallon left in the tank. This trip was pretty much a constant struggle getting up river. Normally I can cruise the slower moving rivers pretty much all day on a tank (3 gallons) of gas.
I spent a all day on the South Bay of Lake Champlain in NY earlier this year using only a 1/2 tank (video not yet posted).
I was probably close to 3/4+ throttle. Spring water flow was very high at approx. 7,000+ CFS with a lot of leaf and other vegetation in the water partially obstructing the vessel water intake. More typical water flow is around 2,000 to 2,800 CFS for summer months. I had fished that river a lot when I was young and usually could find places to wade completely across. Not this time. A slip while wading would have taken me under and downstream one heck of a long way:)
@MyOhioStuff Thanks i was thinking about getting one not for lakes but more for cruising around but i want something that does a reasonable speed. Now that i know this river or stream was flowing fast i know it could do a lot faster in ebb waters and full throttle
@matthewl97 You're quite welcome. Peek at P7 in the series. Upriver through faster moving water. Headway was slow but: No one I know of could have paddled upriver through that! Me and gear, is approx. 240 lbs. On smooth water I can get approx. 10mph (measured by GPS). So if you are going against a water flow of 3 mph, actual SOG (speed over ground) would be ~7 mph. Hope this helps. I love my Mokai. I made the videos to try help others. Happy to answer questions if I can. Best wishes to you.
@kschoen44 Standing and fishing is a little too tricky for me. I hear some people do it but I don't. I sometimes sit up on a cushion I put on the back part of the craft between the back of the seat and the engine cover to give me a little more casting room, but for the most part, I fish while sitting inside. The craft is very stable though, nothing at all like a sea kayak or similar. Taking a leak with a short hose over the side will make it feel a little tippy:) Need a longer hose I guess:)
how far upstream you think you could go on a tank of gas?
