MARIO DEL MONACO, EL MÁS GRANDE TENOR DE TODOS LOS TIEMPOS, EL " TENOR DE TENORES " SU OTELLO NO LO HA SUPERADO NADIE, Y MIRA QUE LO HAN INTENTADO !!!,
Wow, this is very interesting!! He looks around and thinks: "I am Otello and I am the commander of this city. Where is my vessel, I want to go to war!! Where is my wife Desdemona, it’s time to kiss... or to kill her..., or whatever...!" At this time obviously he must have had a real problem with his personal identity; or in other words: He must have been nuts...
MDM's acting here is somewhat stagey, but based on accounts from unbiased critics, it was much more effective in the theatre. I only wish he'd had some capacity for lyricism. Make no mistake; when the music calls for power and passion, he is THRILLING. But his persistent forte (occasionally leavened by a mezza forte or attempt at piano) makes him tiresome to hear throughout a complete role, for me at least --
I can see this video every day. At the beginning, Mario Del Monaco is playing ... himself. Majestic as it can only suits to the king of the histrionics. I didnt know that Mario had such as sense of humor. As to the rest of the video, he really proves his incredible vocal capability combined with an outstanding dramatic acting. He is in the role.
No tenor today can compare! Del Monaco set the bar high for the role of Otello. He is Otello. His big voice, his command of the Italian text, his acting, he is a miracle of a tenor. By far the best. My God what a fantastic scene!
I have been a big fan of this powerfully voiced tenor for a very long time. Although his versatility is not of a Gigli or a Schipa-he is still a very great tenor. Bravo! TY. N.
Versatility or specialization? Now theres a question.I like tenor sounding as good as he possibly can in any given role.Del Monaco was legendary Otello and is considered by many as best Otello ever.Gigli was more versatile, but what role did he "own" like Del Monaco owned Otello? You can say he was very good in all of them, but was he really good in any role compared to the tenors who are legendary in that particular role?Domingo is best example of that- "Jack of all trades but master of none"
wow! this video kicks ass... sound is good and his singing is fantastic! That was cool at the beginning watching him walk around Venizia in costume. Damn he had the whole "package" - voice, looks and he could ACT! Mario! ti voglio bene per sempre! :)

The best since Caruso. Perhaps the equal of Caruso, we will never know.

Thats beyond any fantasy. Which year is this and who is portraying Desdemona please?
Many thanks for this wonderful video.

It seems as if Verdi wrote Otello for del Monaco. Surely the best Otello to date.

baritolo 4 years ago 2
Those of you who criticized him for the staging don't know anything about his singing, because you didn't mention it. Obviously, you are the clowns.
tonytib 4 years ago
