Thank you so much! The videos are AWESOME. and SO informative. I have a white SWD with (educated by your video) a soft coat and was probably "felting" when we thought he was matting. I've been shaving him down because of it. Can you tell me the difference between matting and felting? I love that long coat but my first priority is ensure his skin stays healthy - that I am not mistaking mats for felts. Thanks!!
Well, to my mind, matting is caused by rubbing (i.e., human hands, towels, or collars) and isolated to certain areas (behind ears, around collar).
Felting is a stage the coat undergoes at a certain length. That length depends on the thickness, softness and kink of curl of each individual dog.
You're right--the biggest concern for the dog should be health. But give the scissor-method a try. If you hate it, you can always shave it off! The toughest part about cording is PATIENCE.
Okay, important question. I have been researching cording because a woman with a standard poodle in a continental cut is interested in me doing it because of the whole maintenence aspect. Once the cording is done, how high maintenence is it?
Two answers: the owner will have to keep up with the cord splitting at home, so that maintenance will increase (in lieu of brushing). Second answer: Once the cords are established (will take about a year before they're gorgeous--PATIENCE!!!), the coat is pretty easy to take care of. Wash with diluted shampoo and rinse, rinse, rinse. Squeeze the cords dry like you would hand-dry a sweater. They you can use a blow drier to dry the cords, which is a lot easier than line-brushing.
This is an awesome video thankyou very much. I myself have 2 spanish water dogs and we usually cut their hair cause we are not able to spereate the cords as you have done.
Where did you get Lola from?? Where are you from?
Its great to see that they dont only live in Spain :)
Yes, especially since the dogs are not used to any brushing or mat-breaking up to this point. After this initial cording, it gets MUCH easier for both human and dog.
I was looking at my dogs fur yesterday, but they hir does not knot up like Lola´s does, they have independant knots that are really annoying and hard to break up. They both puppies, I guesse that when they get a bit older they´ll have propper spansh water dogs ahir haha
This is wonderful -- thank you so much!

Well, I don't know why not. If you can break up the mats all the way to the skin.
Essentially, it's working fiber. Dog hair, sheep wool or hair, camel wool. yak wool.....
