Al Dimeola has the best sense of time, and his tone is awesome. Watching him play Hendrix is interesting, but it doesn't suit his style. He and Hendrix came from totally different back rounds. I have seen Al play with his World Sinfonia, and it was to date, my favorite show ever. I love Hendrix, and there are so many that were inspired to play like him. There is only one Al Dimeola, and while many want to play like him, so few can. He is amazing.
Henrix vs Di Meola? Two guitarists worlds apart. Undermining one is simply expressing personal taste. Dimeola's playing isn't overdriven blues rock, it doesnt mean that his music isn't emotionally charged. Hendrix wasnt as technical (at times sloppy), doesnt mean that Di Meola was "better". We can compare the difference in their style and relate it to their life's experience. Al studied music at berklee. Jimi was a hippie. Al is technical. Jimi was inovative & died young. RIP Jimi. I enjoy both
Was a huge Hendrix fan in my teens, when into blues-rock. Can't listen to him now, because that emotion doesn't appeal to me anymore. A big DiMeola fan now. But I agree with the people who said Al isn't right for this type of music and this is just rubbish. He's a technical player whose music appeals to the mind/intellect, not the heart/gut/emotion. He's meant for composition-orientated fusion music or classical. As a player, he has no feeling for Hendrix's style of music at all.
@maceason following tracks: Casino, Race With Devil on Spanish Highway, and The Wizard. These tracks really get my adrenaline going and my heart racing and that is not intellect! Similar comments have been made about John McGlaughlin i.e. that his playing is merely technical and only appeals to the intellect. I find some of Mcglaughlin's playing inspiring and emotional. To me, all three guitarists play with great passion.
Al Di Meola is an unbelievably fast and cool guitarist but all he really does is run up and down scales. You can't even compare his playing to the soulful and epic stuff hendix played. or clapton plays, or buddy guy plays, or jimmy page plays, or angust young plays, or..... the list of greater guitarists goes on and on.
Speed isn't everything. you can play a thousand super fast notes but it doesn't equal 10 good notes, even if they're slow
@Kdragon32 With all due respect..Do you know how tired and cliche your "thousand super fast notes but it doesn't equal 10 good notes" sounds? You obviously haven't listened to much DiMeola. He's much more than fast notes. It's obvious to me that he was given 4 minutes to "wow" the crowd with some fast licks. All the players you mentioned are great, but lay off the old "it's all about the feeling, man." It's about feeling and a whole lot of work and sweat.
With the greatest respect you're comparing two different styles of playing - Classic and Blues - most great guitarists can play both plus Rock but specialise in one - for example Jimi was at heart a blues guitarist, Al is at heart a classic guitarist and say Blackmore is a typical Rock guitarist.
There are around 100 guitarists I'd classify as "guitar greats" and I'd be very hesitant to put them in any order save to rank Jimi first as a true original.
@MakinMagicFractals Thank you for this comment, now I realize how ignorant and stupid my first comment was. Truly it is impossible to put great guitarist in order save, as you said, hendrix first as it is a matter of preference. In essence, I prefer listening to blues and rock guitar over classic guitar, which is why I don't enjoy DiMeola's playing. I apologize for my first comment.
If you like blues guitar then there's a (relatively) new one around - check out "Matt Schofield".
If you like blues generally then check out "Ian Siegal" - in fact find and buy "A bigger plate of meat and potatoes" by the Ian Sigal band with a superb DVD of a concert in Holland with Matt Schofield on lead guitar and Ian on guitar and (incredible) vocals.
@Kdragon32 Of COURSE speed isn't everything. Your statement is clueless because NOBODY BELIEVES THAT. Statements like "speed isn't everything" are made in order to argue that blue-rock guitarists who play pentatonic licks over and over are better than guitarists like John McLaughlin and Al Di Meola who have a much wider palette. Guitarists with slow fingers are not automatically blessed with better ears or larger hearts. I for one think that ADM has a better ear for music than Angus for sure!
hendrix better than al i don't think so not even close you see al could play hendrix i doubt that hendrix could play al way to fast and of course only black guy's can have soul gimmie a fucking break!
Both are wondeful. I saw hendrix twice in the sixties. Got into Di Meola in the seventies and have been waiting patiently to see him live. I have tickets for a show tomorrow night and its been cancelled!!!!
terrible, absolutely terrible. that was a bunch of soulless licks in a boring scale exercise, and quite a flat-sounding fuzztone as well. Hendrix was/is an ever-changing landscape, but this junk here is a flat, boring, antiseptic and pretentious buffoonery.
No, that's what you think. Not the truth! It's only opinion.
Hendrix was very influential for me at first, but then Hendrix went really down the list for me. Lenny Breau became number 1 for me, Jimmy Page will still stay high for me in 2nd or equal to Lenny. Pat Metheny is 3rd. Carlos Santana is high. God! It's hard to make a list with your favorite guitarists! Which is a lot of freakin guitarists!
OF COURSE thats what I think. Didn't you know these comments are our OPINIONS? Did you just come to understand that? You are pointing out what is OBVIOUS. Hendrix is in a league all by himself, but DiMeola didnt create any league and is not really in a class all by himself. And YES this video of him and many others are quite ANTISEPTIC exercises just running up and down scales without any soul. DO YOU KNOW WHAT SOUL IS? Listen to Band of Gypsys. There is no SOUL in DiMeola's guitar voice.
I know what soul is, but Al Di Meola has soul in his own way. Al di Meola just has his own unique style which you don't appreciate and don't have the taste to respect it. You're no deity! You don't what has soul or not, you just hear with your ears and if you don't like it! Immediately you judge it as it had no soul!!
I heard all of Hendrix... I heard The Sky Is Crying solo!
If I don't have Hendrix high in my influence list and Al Di Meola higher than him, does that mean I don't have soul?
Calm down, Tiger. I have the right to my opinion that Al is often soulless in his licks and guitar voice. I know that upsets you, and you take it to mean I think I am a "deity" (??!!!) as you put it. What on earth are you thinking, bro? I'm a deity because I think Hendrix is better than Al?? You need to calm down, Tiger. Peace! :)
I respect your opinion, but it's hard to agree with it.
I see what you mean by soulless... Maybe not for the guitarist, but for your ears you don't hear the soul that you want to hear. I agree that Al's playing is pretty dry, very dry. But that's the way he likes it and that's his unique own style.
PS: Go listen to Lenny Breau playing Vision! It'll blow your socks off! Just sayin'!
@3rdStoneObliterum if you think "There is no SOUL in DiMeola's guitar voice." then get brain, and an appreciation for music. Becuase you obviously have ZERO right now.
What the hell has this got to do with hendrix. he had a funk/soul/blues heart and expressed this within a crude playing style, natural sense of rythym and timing and great melodic phrasing and some fun thrown in. This is just self indulgent. Al de Meola should have stayed away.
well hendrix was more of a jazz musician that most people think, depends on what tune, but many are very jazzy,he was one of the fusion innovators, even if passivly,he IS everywhere and an own league sort of.not saying he's the only great player,as demonstrated here or by many others, too, but surely one of the most influencial and greatest, and my personal nr.1^^
i think of hendrix as more of an innovator then anything, he wasnt the greatest player, but he influenced and inspired some of the greatest guitarists ever. Just think about frank zappa, he was around when hendrix was, and dont get me wrong hendrix is great, but zappa in my mind, blows himout of the water.
well speaking technically i'd have to say, there are by far better, but to me,hendrix just is the best thing ever to happen to the guitar, and an innovator, zappa was awsome,too(R.I.P. both of them),but to me,hendrix is the man, everyones entitled to an own oppinion i guess^^but i can understand what you mean
Very true but think of it this way.... Henry fords Model T could never hold a stick to furuchio Lambroghini's Diablo, But WITHOUT fords Model T there would BE no Lambroghini Diablo.............THATS why hes the greatest,
" Everyone and anyone who has picked up the instrument since 1966 has been under this man's sway whether you like it or not."
Yes, true...but there are OTHER influential greats as well. That you can not deny. And Jimi himself was VERY influenced by the old blues players that came before him and that's where he got the bulk of his riffs and influences from, souped them up, etc. And of course, his theatrics which really amplified his amazing playing so many times more.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I respect Al di Meola for everything he has done, but in my opinion he should have been proved that it's not just a jazz guitar player, but he has that blues side in him, which every guitarist should have, no matter if he plays jazz or rock or metal or flamenco or whatever. And he didn't prove that. He played in his own style without any adaptation to the tune. Man, you can't play jazz on Hendrix's Changes.
Yeah, totally agree, Al is more than a phenomenon, is a genius, and this solo is kick-ass, in terms of technique, but I expected more of a blues playing from him. For example, you can't just metal-shred on a Beatles tune. The same here, you can't jazz-shred on a Hendrix tune, you gotta play blues and rock n' roll, to keep the spirit alive, and to prove how important was Hendrix for you.
Everyone plays like Hendrix anyway, Hendrix is and will be the most popular guitar player of all times but Al Di Meola is Al Di Meola and for me Casino is the greatest guitar album of all times. again for me Al is the greatest guitar player if there is such a thing and I can understand why he plays his own style here. By the way I play guitar for a long time and I sound more like hendrix, lol
On nearly every guitar video on YouTube from Van Halen to Di meola you'll find the "better than Hendrix" or "Hendrix sucks comments". The mere fact that people are still evoking his spirit after more than 40 years since he first appeared on the scene attests to the far-reaching influence this man has had on guitar and music. Everyone and anyone who has picked up the instrument since 1966 has been under this man's sway whether you like it or not.
To "betbowt" and "funkifyyourlife" Thanks for the Trio tip. Much better! I haven't been as moved by acoustic guitars since I saw Carlos Montoya live a couple times. It's not that I prefer acoustic to electric either, quite the contrary. It's especially cool hearing Larry Coryell. I still have a copy of him on Steve Marcus's "Count's Rock Band" where they were inventing Fusion. Al isn't solely a lick monster, Paco is fantastic and John McLaughlin seems equally good on electric and acoustic
It's actually incredible how close to heavy metal this guy's guitar playing is. I'm amazed at his skill, and I think he's just entered my list of top guitarists ever!
I don't know why people are dogging Al, he is a great musician and one of my favorite guitar players. I saw him with RTF and it was Al's playing that got the crowd on it's feet. As far as Jimi Hendrix, Jimi was an inovator of Hard Rock blues, he took me to the ends of space and back. You don't get the real effects of these great musicans on youtube, you have to listen to them on really good stereos played at decent volumes.
I like Al but I woulda had more respect for him if this clip showed him playing something Hendrixy cuz they styles so different - it woulda showed if Al could do something besides, well . . . Al
He didn't go there to play like Hendrix--he went to pay tribute and play like, well, DiMeola. Hendrix would've soiled his pants and been honored Al showed up folks.
I have to disagree since Jimi is quoted at saying he had no respect for guitarists that couldn't play rhythm seamlessly with lead and he certainly considered speed for speed sake sophomoric wanking, too much focus on mechanics and not nearly enough on actual music. The reason Hendrix likened concerts to church is because to him, music is supposed to connect with and move people, not say "see how much faster I am than you?" Calling this music is like saying fast talking salesmen are orators.
I hear plenty of melody here, and not once do I hear anything that's fast for the sake of being fast.
Again, he hit some big vibrato high notes (Actually some of the best vibrato I've ever heard Al do..) which are pretty much.. stereotypical Jimi/everyone that came after.
Since this is the 2nd time people have tried to characterize Jimi with anything as simple as high note vibrato (1st one a troll I thought) I have to say you guys have not heard enough Hendrix like 1983, Little Wing, Villanova Junction, Machine Gun and even Manic Depression. While this might be Al at his most melodic it still leaves me cold. That's probably just taste so perhaps I generalized too. Please hear Jimi for yourselves so you don't fall into the same trap.
not making an excuse, but guessing (from his Wikipedia page
"In various interviews, Di Meola has stated that his reason for stepping away from the electric guitar is due to hearing damage (manifested as tinnitus) from years of playing at excessive volumes"
it seems like he is a little rusty in this respect to me
dude i fucking love machine gun from live at the filmore east. that fucking song is fucking incredible. im like the only one around here that knows it. jimi was on fire that night, and hit so many brilliant notes.
You don´t know what you are talking about, if you respect Jimi Hendrix you should feel greatfull that Guitar legends like Al Di Meola play to remember him. This guitar player is good and even if he plays with lots of speed you should know that Aldi is not about speed he is alot better than JUST SPEED...
Yes I do know since I was only stating my opinion. I never said Al was a lousy player just that I don;t like his style. To me it is mostly scale, scale scale and just bores me after a few bars. If I wanted intricate intellectual precision repeating patterns I'd rather read mathematics of String Theory or Quantum Gravity or code in Assembly. In music I want soul and passion.
Yes, same as I, thats why I prefer Slash, Hendrix, Page more than Metal Shredders, but in Al I listen to lot of pasion, maybe is just not your taste our you have not listen alot of his music, in my Country people say "for taste color was made".
I named three albums above that all feature Al's playing that also contain about 7 of his own actual compositions. There are others, but these are the best start. Mind blowing stuff. More fire than you can run from.
There is also a DVD that you can pick up for a couple bucks on ebay that will blow your mind like it's never been blown. It's called "One of these Nights." This features about 11 of Al's own compositions and playing.
di meola plays a lot more than just scales... a lot of jazz goes wayyy off the beaten path... he can blaze through scales like no other guitarist, but some of his shit is so out there and unpredictable, its almost hard to listen to
Name a song please. I can handle "outside" no problem. I like Coltrane and even some Sun Ra. I just need to hear some human soul in there to relate or be interested for more than a couple minutes. Hendrix is spellbinding.
How can you like Coltrane and then put down guys that play with speed? Tell me where the Hendrix-like "cool" music is in Giant Steps. The music and the soul in that music is on a different level than blues bends and vibrato. Hendrix is one of my favorites as well, but Al deserves far more respect for the time, effort, and work he's put into his craft.
Way off in what way? Hendrix held rhythm as high as lead and IMHO his seamless integration of the two is a major part of why he has no peer. Please! This is the 3rd time I am asking for an example and so far no response. I would love to discover I have been wrong about Al or that he has matured as a player. So everyone please stop flaming me for having an opinion and just turn me on to something cool. It doiesn;t even have to be as cool as Jimi, just real music, not just chops.
Reading comprehension, man. Al DiMeola has better rhythmic sense than 90% of the players out there. Just becuase you can't undesrtand the music doesn't mean that it's not "cool". Al's more recent material is much more into composition than speed and chops. He's even stated that he plays far less notes and isn't as interested in speed as much as he used to be. Regardless of his chops, he made some amazing history with Return To Forever, and with the acoustic trio w/ McLaughlin and De Lucia.
If you listen to/ read/ analyze any of Al's acoustic compositions; his compositional skill, voice leading/resolutions, rhythm and just strait-up sound production (not to be confused with engineering/production) is matched only by the likes of John Mclaughlin and Paco Delucia.
As far as his electric composition and playing goes... Well, I am not a big fan. Don't get me wrong, I am no purist, I love electric as much as the next guy, just not electric a la Al.
I agree, Al is a master in his own rite. It just seems that comments I see about musicians in general are from those that more than likely don't play thenselves. Playing your I pod doesn't count either.
It would be great if Al would take a tip from Hendrix and drop some of the "vocabulary" and just have something worthwhile to say from the heart. So the point for me is if you're invited to a Hendrix tribute you'd better stand next to his fi_yer instead of showing off fast scales. Say something that matters, Al!
im in a jam i have a concert tonight but when i hit a open note all i hear is buzz when i fret it the buzz is less but is still there just a little it sounds like the buzz is coming from the bottom part of the bridge if i hit a note then slightly push my hand on the area of buzz it goes away but as soon as i lift it it is buzzing what can i do to fix this in the next 4 hours before the concert
Thing to try is raising the bridge on that string. It will affect the guitars intonation a bit but maybe that's a price a worth paying if the buzz is wrecking your tone completely.
Perhaps you have a zero fret that is overly worn or a floyd rose with locking nuts that needs attention.
Best thing to do is visit your guitar shop and get it serviced. Perhaps it's just time you bought a better guitar. Your probably a lot better player then you were when you bought it. A good guitar will reward you
and what the fuck does al di meolas solo have to with jimmie? of course it is his style and i love his stuff but this just doesnt sound nice just alot of fast notes and has no plac ein a jimmie tribute! long live the al di nd rock on!
i didnt say that everyone should play lie jimmi theres no point because only jimmi could play like jimmi. The point i was trying to put across is that if you play at a jimmi tribute concert you have to get into the jimmi vibe if you get my drift?!? it's like getting kirk hammet to play at a ben harper tribute concert and he rips its up with seek and destroy i mean i love kirky but that would just sound strange not in he same groove that's all.
@qommoq - Why use one note when 200 will suffice? I type this as I listen to this glorious aural plebian plecktrumonstrosity of pretentiousness (Part 5- Pat Metheny-Zero Tolerance For Silence) emitting from my long suffering loudsquawkers. Another Kilometrestone in Muzak to salve the beating throbbing nappers of MOR orificebouys.
I saw Al Di Meola in Seattle tearing up some blues/funk with RTF(return to forever). Most player are just pissed because they can't hang with the dimeola tech/composition. - long live the Elegant Gypsy!!!
I think many of the virtuoso type players like to play their style and no other. This type of thing is seen all over youtube. As said in other posts, one of the G3 shows where vai, Sats, and Malmsteen play Voodoo Child or especially Little Wing is one example. Another is a vid where Uli Jon Roth plays Sunshine of Your Love with Jack Bruce.
I undersatnd that the Blues cramps your style but just F**king use the Blues Scale. Your modal mombojombo works great playing fusion but not the Blues.
Uh no!!! The blues is a basic scale!! You might know that if you play guitar or you either play guitar but not that proficient!!! The blues scale is like talking in baby language to more advanced guitar players!!! But on the same fucking token you have no heart unless you can play the blues!!!
hey doeygood3000: I don't know who the fuck you are and why I got an e-mail notice of you calling me a fuck ass, but my comment had nothing to do with what you're griping about. All I said was "Jimi is rolling over in his grave," and I said it MONTHS AGO...Are you looking to spar with someone over this ridiculous video? If so bring it on you fuck face. Anyone defending this video has no musical integrity to begin with, so I have no problem breaking your little ass down just for fun.
"breaking your little ass down just for fun"..........some people need to get a life. u take yourself way too serouisly. Like your opinion is fact or something. "oh what you want to start something" " i have no problem breaking your little ass down just for fun".....over the internet....right!, okay you do that.i'll be practicing with my guitar in the meen time.
magotcoveredbabies: I try to only respond to videos, not people. So when someone replies to a comment I made by calling me a "fuck ass," I get annoyed. You can break people down over the internet quite easily...I wasn't referring to any physical violence (that would be absurd), but if someone calling me names wants to defend this video with a formulated argument than, yes, I would have no problem breaking them down just for fun. Sorry to get you all upset...you can go back to practicing now!
al is a fantastic player, fantastic sense of rythm and great alternate picking but you cannot compare to hendrix or django or the mac NOT THE SAME DIMENSION
It's funny - Al Dimeola is one of my top 3 guitarists and learning to play his songs make me like him even more. But this, wasn't very good. His attempt to play a blues/rock-type solo was uninspired to say the least. Almost as bad as Yngwie Malmsteen trying to play a Jimi song - but not nearly as bad. There's nothing worse than that
Al has gone on record about how his style is plain, and how his guitar influences don't shine through. When stating this point he mentioned Hendrix and Jim Hall. Al is the man.
There was a Band called simply called 'GO'. Steve Winwood (vocals), Al Di Meola, etc. They only did 2 albums back in the late 70's ! One is a live album recorded in Europe with a Rock' N Roll solo by Al that is the greatest guitar solo i've ever heard >even Hendrix
Al is a fantastic guitarist, but he's wearing a white suit... AWESOME!!!! and also the way that one guy at the beginning totally butchers his name: "al... dihmyouhlaa!"
Al is a fantastic player. To say he is too technical and scale-orientated is utter nonesense. I often think that some people are just jealous of his technique. He really set the standard for other great players who followed him.
He was only 19 when he joined Chick Corea´s RETURN TO FOREVER.
Man what a bunch of intellectual holier-than-thou masturbating. Maybe Al Di Meola and Carlos Santana are both amazing players, probably better than anyone who has posted here?
Santana is over rated untalented commercial just a basic player, anyone understands about playing guitars can see that, santana couldn't keep up playing with me let alone Meola
anybody who says that he's another santana is nothing but a person who doesn't know anything about music.. man carlos never used tose kind of scales, santana is staying on the pentatonic and harmonic minor chords.. al developes more than that, he feels more jazzy and less bluesy that santana is! al smokes carlos, and carlos can't feel that!
My friend, when Al di Meola decided that he wanted to be a guitarist(among others) is because he heard Santana's amazing for the 70's aiolian style blues, and thats a big deal.Al is now better(of course) but Carlos is a true innovator.Eric Gales is ten times better than Jimi was,so what?
Bonamassa,Gales and others are technically far more advanced than 70's guitar heros like Page,Clapton,Hendrix,Green etc BUT!there is a big But here,Hendrix and the others were true pioneers, they cranked up,they played super fast, wrote amazing songs, riffs etc. When it comes to technique although we all have to admit that Steve Ray was better than Jimi,as Jimi was better than Buddy etc.
Al Di Meola sounds like Santana on steroids!

completely different styles.

terrible, absolutely terrible. that was a bunch of soulless licks in a boring scale exercise, and quite a flat-sounding fuzztone as well. Hendrix was/is an ever-changing landscape, but this junk here is a flat, boring, antiseptic and pretentious buffoonery.
3rdStoneObliterum 1 year ago
Soulless? Flat? Boring? Antiseptic? Buffoonery?
No, that's what you think. Not the truth! It's only opinion.
Hendrix was very influential for me at first, but then Hendrix went really down the list for me. Lenny Breau became number 1 for me, Jimmy Page will still stay high for me in 2nd or equal to Lenny. Pat Metheny is 3rd. Carlos Santana is high. God! It's hard to make a list with your favorite guitarists! Which is a lot of freakin guitarists!
Anyways, you're only correct for yourself.
LinkBulletBill 1 year ago
OF COURSE thats what I think. Didn't you know these comments are our OPINIONS? Did you just come to understand that? You are pointing out what is OBVIOUS. Hendrix is in a league all by himself, but DiMeola didnt create any league and is not really in a class all by himself. And YES this video of him and many others are quite ANTISEPTIC exercises just running up and down scales without any soul. DO YOU KNOW WHAT SOUL IS? Listen to Band of Gypsys. There is no SOUL in DiMeola's guitar voice.
3rdStoneObliterum 1 year ago
I know what soul is, but Al Di Meola has soul in his own way. Al di Meola just has his own unique style which you don't appreciate and don't have the taste to respect it. You're no deity! You don't what has soul or not, you just hear with your ears and if you don't like it! Immediately you judge it as it had no soul!!
I heard all of Hendrix... I heard The Sky Is Crying solo!
If I don't have Hendrix high in my influence list and Al Di Meola higher than him, does that mean I don't have soul?
LinkBulletBill 1 year ago
Calm down, Tiger. I have the right to my opinion that Al is often soulless in his licks and guitar voice. I know that upsets you, and you take it to mean I think I am a "deity" (??!!!) as you put it. What on earth are you thinking, bro? I'm a deity because I think Hendrix is better than Al?? You need to calm down, Tiger. Peace! :)
3rdStoneObliterum 1 year ago
Sorry, I was shit-faced when I replied you...
LinkBulletBill 1 year ago

MarioPedroII 2 years ago 4
i think of hendrix as more of an innovator then anything, he wasnt the greatest player, but he influenced and inspired some of the greatest guitarists ever. Just think about frank zappa, he was around when hendrix was, and dont get me wrong hendrix is great, but zappa in my mind, blows himout of the water.
JohnnyMKV 2 years ago
well speaking technically i'd have to say, there are by far better, but to me,hendrix just is the best thing ever to happen to the guitar, and an innovator, zappa was awsome,too(R.I.P. both of them),but to me,hendrix is the man, everyones entitled to an own oppinion i guess^^but i can understand what you mean

Man, you can't play jazz on Hendrix's Changes.
tibyv8 2 years ago
sorry to disagree, but it seams that you just don't hear it...
Al is a phenomenon on a guitar and this solo is just awesome!
zorkonmilxx 2 years ago
Yeah, totally agree, Al is more than a phenomenon, is a genius, and this solo is kick-ass, in terms of technique, but I expected more of a blues playing from him. For example, you can't just metal-shred on a Beatles tune. The same here, you can't jazz-shred on a Hendrix tune, you gotta play blues and rock n' roll, to keep the spirit alive, and to prove how important was Hendrix for you.
tibyv8 2 years ago
Everyone plays like Hendrix anyway, Hendrix is and will be the most popular guitar player of all times but Al Di Meola is Al Di Meola and for me Casino is the greatest guitar album of all times. again for me Al is the greatest guitar player if there is such a thing and I can understand why he plays his own style here. By the way I play guitar for a long time and I sound more like hendrix, lol
BATHUMAN 2 years ago

Al isn't solely a lick monster, Paco is fantastic and John McLaughlin seems equally good on electric and acoustic

mybandaccount 2 years ago
Al is certainly a very fine guitarist. However,
his playing has a propensity to kindoff go on
and on. It's not really speed, but the space between the notes that really counts.
Go out there and listen to Alan Holdsworth
and you can see what I mean.
Gilyslas 2 years ago
I don't know why people are dogging Al, he is a great musician and one of my favorite guitar players. I saw him with RTF and it was Al's playing that got the crowd on it's feet. As far as Jimi Hendrix, Jimi was an inovator of Hard Rock blues, he took me to the ends of space and back. You don't get the real effects of these great musicans on youtube, you have to listen to them on really good stereos played at decent volumes.
cosmic112 3 years ago
I like Al but I woulda had more respect for him if this clip showed him playing something Hendrixy cuz they styles so different - it woulda showed if Al could do something besides, well . . . Al
george383 3 years ago
He didn't go there to play like Hendrix--he went to pay tribute and play like, well, DiMeola. Hendrix would've soiled his pants and been honored Al showed up folks.
axeman1009 3 years ago
I have to disagree since Jimi is quoted at saying he had no respect for guitarists that couldn't play rhythm seamlessly with lead and he certainly considered speed for speed sake sophomoric wanking, too much focus on mechanics and not nearly enough on actual music. The reason Hendrix likened concerts to church is because to him, music is supposed to connect with and move people, not say "see how much faster I am than you?" Calling this music is like saying fast talking salesmen are orators.
enorbet2 3 years ago
I hear plenty of melody here, and not once do I hear anything that's fast for the sake of being fast.
Again, he hit some big vibrato high notes (Actually some of the best vibrato I've ever heard Al do..) which are pretty much.. stereotypical Jimi/everyone that came after.
TimmyPage06 3 years ago
Since this is the 2nd time people have tried to characterize Jimi with anything as simple as high note vibrato (1st one a troll I thought) I have to say you guys have not heard enough Hendrix like 1983, Little Wing, Villanova Junction, Machine Gun and even Manic Depression. While this might be Al at his most melodic it still leaves me cold. That's probably just taste so perhaps I generalized too. Please hear Jimi for yourselves so you don't fall into the same trap.
enorbet2 3 years ago
not making an excuse, but guessing (from his Wikipedia page
"In various interviews, Di Meola has stated that his reason for stepping away from the electric guitar is due to hearing damage (manifested as tinnitus) from years of playing at excessive volumes"
it seems like he is a little rusty in this respect to me

You don´t know what you are talking about, if you respect Jimi Hendrix you should feel greatfull that Guitar legends like Al Di Meola play to remember him. This guitar player is good and even if he plays with lots of speed you should know that Aldi is not about speed he is alot better than JUST SPEED...
deapwavelio 2 years ago
Yes I do know since I was only stating my opinion. I never said Al was a lousy player just that I don;t like his style. To me it is mostly scale, scale scale and just bores me after a few bars. If I wanted intricate intellectual precision repeating patterns I'd rather read mathematics of String Theory or Quantum Gravity or code in Assembly. In music I want soul and passion.
enorbet2 2 years ago
Yes, same as I, thats why I prefer Slash, Hendrix, Page more than Metal Shredders, but in Al I listen to lot of pasion, maybe is just not your taste our you have not listen alot of his music, in my Country people say "for taste color was made".
deapwavelio 2 years ago
Sorry to take so long to reply and thanks for your comment. Any recommendations for a song that shows me some fire and pathos?
enorbet2 2 years ago
I named three albums above that all feature Al's playing that also contain about 7 of his own actual compositions. There are others, but these are the best start. Mind blowing stuff. More fire than you can run from.
There is also a DVD that you can pick up for a couple bucks on ebay that will blow your mind like it's never been blown. It's called "One of these Nights." This features about 11 of Al's own compositions and playing.
betbowt 2 years ago
di meola plays a lot more than just scales... a lot of jazz goes wayyy off the beaten path... he can blaze through scales like no other guitarist, but some of his shit is so out there and unpredictable, its almost hard to listen to
roadrashrobby53 2 years ago
Name a song please. I can handle "outside" no problem. I like Coltrane and even some Sun Ra. I just need to hear some human soul in there to relate or be interested for more than a couple minutes. Hendrix is spellbinding.
enorbet2 2 years ago
How can you like Coltrane and then put down guys that play with speed? Tell me where the Hendrix-like "cool" music is in Giant Steps. The music and the soul in that music is on a different level than blues bends and vibrato. Hendrix is one of my favorites as well, but Al deserves far more respect for the time, effort, and work he's put into his craft.
funkifyyourlife 2 years ago
This may be no surprise to some but if you want outside just paste this onto the basic url for youtube
/watch?v=JtEsuHuqNLo
or search for "coltrane ascension" and hear intellect with fire and soul paramount
enorbet2 2 years ago
Al has far better rhythm chops than just about anyone out there. He touts rhythm as being the most important thing. You're way off, man.
funkifyyourlife 2 years ago
Way off in what way? Hendrix held rhythm as high as lead and IMHO his seamless integration of the two is a major part of why he has no peer. Please! This is the 3rd time I am asking for an example and so far no response. I would love to discover I have been wrong about Al or that he has matured as a player. So everyone please stop flaming me for having an opinion and just turn me on to something cool. It doiesn;t even have to be as cool as Jimi, just real music, not just chops.
enorbet2 2 years ago
Reading comprehension, man. Al DiMeola has better rhythmic sense than 90% of the players out there. Just becuase you can't undesrtand the music doesn't mean that it's not "cool". Al's more recent material is much more into composition than speed and chops. He's even stated that he plays far less notes and isn't as interested in speed as much as he used to be. Regardless of his chops, he made some amazing history with Return To Forever, and with the acoustic trio w/ McLaughlin and De Lucia.
funkifyyourlife 2 years ago
If you listen to/ read/ analyze any of Al's acoustic compositions; his compositional skill, voice leading/resolutions, rhythm and just strait-up sound production (not to be confused with engineering/production) is matched only by the likes of John Mclaughlin and Paco Delucia.
As far as his electric composition and playing goes... Well, I am not a big fan. Don't get me wrong, I am no purist, I love electric as much as the next guy, just not electric a la Al.
betbowt 2 years ago
Check out all of his own compositions/playing on the three trio albums. Unbelievable...
betbowt 2 years ago
I agree, Al is a master in his own rite. It just seems that comments I see about musicians in general are from those that more than likely don't play thenselves. Playing your I pod doesn't count either.
royer54 3 years ago
It would be great if Al would take a tip from Hendrix and drop some of the "vocabulary" and just have something worthwhile to say from the heart. So the point for me is if you're invited to a Hendrix tribute you'd better stand next to his fi_yer instead of showing off fast scales. Say something that matters, Al!

im in a jam i have a concert tonight but when i hit a open note all i hear is buzz when i fret it the buzz is less but is still there just a little it sounds like the buzz is coming from the bottom part of the bridge if i hit a note then slightly push my hand on the area of buzz it goes away but as soon as i lift it it is buzzing what can i do to fix this in the next 4 hours before the concert
classical193 3 years ago
Thing to try is raising the bridge on that string. It will affect the guitars intonation a bit but maybe that's a price a worth paying if the buzz is wrecking your tone completely.
Perhaps you have a zero fret that is overly worn or a floyd rose with locking nuts that needs attention.
Best thing to do is visit your guitar shop and get it serviced. Perhaps it's just time you bought a better guitar. Your probably a lot better player then you were when you bought it. A good guitar will reward you

So you think that at a Jimi tribute everybody has to play like Jimi.
What's the point of having more than one guitar player tribute him then?
They should just get one guy and have him play everything like Jimi then.
evh5150316 3 years ago
i didnt say that everyone should play lie jimmi theres no point because only jimmi could play like jimmi.

Another is a vid where Uli Jon Roth plays Sunshine of Your Love with Jack Bruce.
