i'm like this game i luv COD as well, but sometimes the realism in this game is more fun! but like you pointed out, the graphics are getting kinda dated! i'm looking really forward to "RED ORCHESTRA 2: Heroes of Stalingrad" i think its gonna be a blast, and it looks even more realistic than the first game!
My laptop doesn't even match the minimum requirements for the new Red Orchestra, but completely surpasses the recommended specs for the first one. Having seen how awesome the new one looks, do you think it's worth getting Red Orchestra 1 or will I be disappointed / still thinking about the 2nd? Dumb question I know lol

you forgot to mention how retarded the bots are for cons. Much of the time they can't even leave spawn, or they just drive the vehicles around in circles. The most irritating thing they do is when you are in a tank, lining up one of those difficult shots, and the damned bots get in and start driving around in circles. you can tell them to get out, and they do for about 10 seconds, then get back in and screw up your positioning and shot again. all of that being said, I fucking love this game.
@symetrixpc the bots dont leave the spawn because the map your playing is not official, its probably a modded map which there are alot and this amateur programers dont usually program the ai since its a multiplayer map
hey if u like this games realism check out insurgency, its an amazing mod overhaul for hl2. there is no bunny hopping and one round of assault rifle is lethal. its a great game.
@taylor189 yes, and another source mod that recently got revitalized is Resistance and Liberation. it's somewaht of a clone of red orchestra except there is absolutely no hud and it plays very differently. definitely one of my favorite mods ever. i HIGHLY reccomend any fans of realism shooters go check it out ;].

@AirsoftFinnsch three or four years ago it would have looked ok, five years ago it would have been considered a good looking game. bear in mind that from 2007 till today, the quality of graphics have increased like 15%, compared to the very steep increases we saw in the years before. reason being the consoles and vista and dx10
so unless you were too young to play games in 2005-2006, the grphx should not bother you, if they do, i guess you're just too young. (also grphx whore kid etc)

One of the best shooters I've ever played. Frustrating but extremely rewarding. You genuinely try and act like a soldier in this game... crawling to avoid snipers.. being terrified to be the first guy up a flight of stairs... though some of the big tank levels are lame as hell
@bce5150 I agree with you completely, the infantry maps were my thing. I love the feeling of being pinned down by a gunner and slowly crawling to a new position and catching him off guard. Totally satisfying. :)
That slow gameplay with all the running can be countered with teamwork.
You get 10 guys in a troop carrier covered by 2 tanks you get 10 guys into combat in 3 minutes, where as you send 5 guys running across a field on there own you get 1 guy to the fight if you're lucky.

the con that you pointed out in the review isn't really right. you said you hop onto a server only to find bots. when on the server list looking for servers to get on, click on the server and in the bottem window for that server it will show you if there are any players on there. alot of players just go by the numbers which isn't accurate as they can be all bots. My realism Unit has its own server and we have 18 bots 9 each side.
@julianraw Yeah you're right, I never saw that. Now the only con would be lack of a huge player base, BUT there is still definitely a good size dedicated player base playing, so again, that would detract from the con-ness? :P
yes alot still do, i been in it since 2006 when it came out and as well as the mod before that. the numbers have went down a bit but there are still alot of players, you will still find the old clans and realism units around. I myself Lead a realism unit and have been since 2007, we have 13 guys. there are total conversion mods as well that you can play too, one is called Darkest Hour, which is like a whole nother RO, look up Darkest Hour on utube here and check out the vids.

That's a "depends" answer lol. Really as much as I loved and enjoyed playing this game I would have to say.....no. Only if your on a tight gaming budget. If your on a tight budget I would say wait for RO2, which will be like RO1, but with improvements such as mounting. You can now climb through windows and over small obstacles, and it is using I believe an updated engine. I'll have to look into that and get back to you. The fanboy in me screams get it! But the frugle buyer in me says wait lol.

yeah, you can still find full servers. There aren't as much people as when the game first came out, but there's no problem finding a good full server. ^^
Sorry for the late reply, I used Fraps to record this, and did all my editing in windows movie maker. I never payed it as a mod, although I did always want to get Unreal 2004 when I played the demo. Cool man, those are my favorite kinds of maps. I'll have to check that mod out, if it's for the retail game. Thanks for the comment. ^^
Well I picked up a new headset and just recorded over the time line in windows movie maker. Thanks Rick, I'm going to use this same method for my Indigo Prophecy walkthrough sometime in the near future.

Yeah I understand what ur saying, It's a game I like to come back to every now and then though. But yeah unless you find a really good server where people are chatting and using tactics, without getting TOO into it if you know what I mean. :P
nice review man. i have always been a fan of the "realism" games, and until red orchestra, it just hasn't been quite my favorite category. a couple things i would hav to add to "cons" would be that (1) is it just me, or does tripwire seem intent on making this game seem as gritty as possible? I mean, sure, blowing people's limbs off can be cool, but honestly, all the maps in RO seem to have some sort of cloudy or dark weather setting.
Plus, the soundtrack can seem a little dark at times. and (2) i would say that the game does have some limitations to its realism. I used to play ArmA about a year ago, and it definitely has some more realistic aspects to it over RO, particularly in wounds. If you got shot in the arm, your aim would become more unsteady and move around the screen. I remember a mission where you had to blow up some enemy tanks in a base, and while escaping i was crippled, and had to crawl back to base :P
haha that sounds awesome man. Yeah I can't wait for ARMA 2 to come out here in the states. That game is going to be a BLAST. Yeah I see what you mean, there are some day time maps where the sun is shining and all that but for the most part they are pretty dark and depressing. Thanks for your feedback. :)
yw, its a shame i won't be able to play Arma 2....or any other game that comes out on pc. the only pc i have is this little laptop which got close to 20-25 fps in wooded or urban areas in arma. i guess ill have to start saving up for now :\
I REALLY wanted to get ARMA 2 when it came out, but honestly I started watching tons and tons of vids before the release of it, and I got more and more underwhelmed by it. I mean the game looks beautiful, the sheer size of it is incredible, but in order for a game like that to be truly great, you need like 60, or even 70 on 70 battles. It would just feel too empty to fight such a small amount of people in such a vast area. IDK though, I might get it one day.

really good review.
i have never played this game but i will.
its hard to find such a realistic game like this. i dont like those games where you need to shoot "50" rounds to kill your enemy. this is really good.

No prob, if I was more fluid with my PC gaming skills, I'd get the game but it has a much tougher learning curve then battlefield. -.-'

The one player on MEDIUM is wa-a-a-a-a-y to easy you have to play on hard or higher on 1 player (which is called practice mode)

yeah, you can still find full servers. There aren't as much people as when the game first came out, but there's no problem finding a good full server. ^^

OT: I liked RO more when it was a mod for UT2004, it was more emphasized on close-infantry combat since tanks werent yet implemented :)
Darkest Hour mod for RO has way better close-combat-infantry maps, sadly.

Sorry for the late reply, I used Fraps to record this, and did all my editing in windows movie maker. I never payed it as a mod, although I did always want to get Unreal 2004 when I played the demo. Cool man, those are my favorite kinds of maps. I'll have to check that mod out, if it's for the retail game. Thanks for the comment. ^^

Well I picked up a new headset and just recorded over the time line in windows movie maker. Thanks Rick, I'm going to use this same method for my Indigo Prophecy walkthrough sometime in the near future.

I bought this game when it frist came out, before it was release, it was hard to play. but easy to get used too. But it got boring really fast. Its been a while since ive played

Yeah I understand what ur saying, It's a game I like to come back to every now and then though. But yeah unless you find a really good server where people are chatting and using tactics, without getting TOO into it if you know what I mean. :P

true, I definitely like both types. But overall the arcadey or deathmatch type are easier to just fall back into and play a few rounds of.

nice review man. i have always been a fan of the "realism" games, and until red orchestra, it just hasn't been quite my favorite category. a couple things i would hav to add to "cons" would be that (1) is it just me, or does tripwire seem intent on making this game seem as gritty as possible? I mean, sure, blowing people's limbs off can be cool, but honestly, all the maps in RO seem to have some sort of cloudy or dark weather setting.

Plus, the soundtrack can seem a little dark at times. and (2) i would say that the game does have some limitations to its realism. I used to play ArmA about a year ago, and it definitely has some more realistic aspects to it over RO, particularly in wounds. If you got shot in the arm, your aim would become more unsteady and move around the screen. I remember a mission where you had to blow up some enemy tanks in a base, and while escaping i was crippled, and had to crawl back to base :P

haha that sounds awesome man. Yeah I can't wait for ARMA 2 to come out here in the states. That game is going to be a BLAST. Yeah I see what you mean, there are some day time maps where the sun is shining and all that but for the most part they are pretty dark and depressing. Thanks for your feedback. :)

yw, its a shame i won't be able to play Arma 2....or any other game that comes out on pc. the only pc i have is this little laptop which got close to 20-25 fps in wooded or urban areas in arma. i guess ill have to start saving up for now :\

I REALLY wanted to get ARMA 2 when it came out, but honestly I started watching tons and tons of vids before the release of it, and I got more and more underwhelmed by it. I mean the game looks beautiful, the sheer size of it is incredible, but in order for a game like that to be truly great, you need like 60, or even 70 on 70 battles. It would just feel too empty to fight such a small amount of people in such a vast area. IDK though, I might get it one day.
