I think what the whole movie is trying to say about 'nam is that you had the rebel side(Elias) and the traditional military(Barnes). In the end barnes shoots Elias which ends up destroying the platoon( losing the war). This movie explains a lot and has many references if you look deep enough...

one of the best scenes in the movie, they actually did smoke weed before they did the scene according to willem dafoe, but this scene is a good example of people forgetting about the horrors of war and having a good time partying and being happy. platoon is one of the best movies ever in my opinion.

Wicked luv for this - my all-time fave scene of this movie, blows away all the reals of war even for one mind-blowing night - yeah pity we didnt get to see much of Depp in this scene nor the movie even, imagine having a j with Johnny oh! Love this whole scene, I agree dion, best part of the movie - watched it 4 or 5 times in a row and saw a couple bloopers in the editing though. At 2:58, watch the character dancing with Charlie Sheen stomp on the foot of the guy behind him - pretty funny. Also, at 3:06 the guys are singing "if you look closer..." but its not the right part of the song.
