  • Everyone thinks a foreign language is diffult to learn to speak fluently. The truth is, for everyday usage, most language have only very limited vocabulary to learn. Most have fewer than 500 words. You can almost get by 90% of the time with less than a thousand word vocabuary. The real difficulty is mastering the language at very advanced level, lets say talking about philosphy or literature.

  • @RareVDO Hmm,the trouble I'm having with Japanese is it's very rough, and even when I think I've at least got my point across, they don't get what I'm saying. The only way I have of contacting them is through the internet as the area I'm in is not very diverse. Cantonese I could maybe do,because there's sometimes Chinese people at the Jade Palace, but I haven't been learning Chinese for very long at all and I doubt I'd get past ''Ni hao''.

  • speaks it better than me

  • funny !!

  • Sorry I posted some wrong comments. I intended to post them to @BAIYUE1 but I posted them to you accidentally, please ignore those comments. Sorry for bothering you! Thx for your sharing.

  • And most of the Cantonese I know think that Cantonese is less beautiful than Mandarin and English. Not like you who views what you see represent all others' feelings, I won't say EVERYONE thinks their mother tongue is the most beautiful. I would just say this is the phenonmenon i see around me. After all, I just know the Cantonese around me which is a small portion compared with the whole world. If you are normal enough you'll understand. Be sensible ok? otherwise you'll be viewed as stupid. 傻架咩

  • and i think Cantonese has lots of swearing languages which are unexpectably extremely rude. more than Mandarin in my knowledge and my mum who came from the mainland. Come to think of it, my feelings to Cantonese (language) is diminished. If you don't know the details don't blame others so recklessly ok?!! 唉, BTW你識唔識廣東話架阿生/阿姐

PS: I never intended to blemish Cantonese ok? 係咁先88

  • Sorry haha I NEVER say i represent HK or Cantonese, i just mentioned i came from HK.

And I speak in Cantonese and eat Chinese food all my life.

i HAVE been living in my root all of the time. That's why i'm interested in other different cultures or even fascinated by them. How many Cantonese do u know? I know make Cantonese friends all of my life from kindergarten to now. maybe you only know the small portion and just define all or most Cantonese by yourself which is not comprehensive.

  • his back is all wet lol

  • That's just awesome! Just can't believe it's uttered from a westerner (if I can only hear the voice I will no doubt that it's a native orthodox Cantonese speaker but with the picture I was astonished as he accent is simply flawless and he is able to use tricky words....) Impressed!!

  • Funny!! I am confused that he's white but he just speaks in perfect Cantonese!! Also, he can tell Hong Kong's jokes. :D

  • I'm a local HK and Cantonese is my mother tongue but I actually think Mandarin is more beautiful than Cantonese..=]

  • @mandonkeyhamsterdy

So I think you are bad Cantonese or even fake Cantonese.

Every one always think their mother language is best, most beautiful!

  • @BAIYUE1 == 你咁諗我都冇辦法架... The fact that I think Mandarin is more beautiful doesn't mean that I'm a bad Cantonese coz I still respect Cantonese culture, and I even think I'm lucky to be born and live in HK becasue there's no natural disasters and no wars, not like Japan or the US. Not everyone thinks the way you do, your assumption that "Every one always think their mother language is best, most beautiful" is not an absolute or definite truth.

Do you know this Chinese saying?==

I still respect Cantonese culture but only love other languages more, when you know more about the beauty of different languages, it's just like you are tasting different delicacies, and you can choose which food is better. I just like other food more, that doesnt mean I hate my original food given.

  • @BAIYUE1 你明唔明我講咩??

Do you get what I mean? btw, what do you mean by a bad Cantonese? I NEVER do anything bad to blemish Hong Kong or Cantonese culture, I still study hard, and go through traditional festivals humbly like 中秋節, 清明, 新年, if you don't get it, you're quite narrow-minded which is a pity, 唉

  • @BAIYUE1 That is about a freedom of choice. shi shi wu jue dui ma, 都係果句啦。

  • @mandonkeyhamsterdy

you can have any choice which you want!

You can like mandarin than cantonese.Ok,not problem! But don't represent for Hongkonger(or Cantonese).

I know most of Cantonese(except you) still think Cantonese is the best.

You eat rice, but sometimes you want to eat hamburger,or spaghety,...but after that you still eat rice.Or you have to come back your root!

  • @BAIYUE1 orry haha I NEVER say i represent HK or Cantonese, i just mentioned i came from HK.

And I speak in Cantonese and eat Chinese food all my life.

i HAVE been living in my root all of the time. That's why i'm interested in other different cultures or even fascinated by them. How many Cantonese do u know? • @BAIYUE1 If you are normal enough you'll understand. Be sensible ok? otherwise you'll be viewed as stupid. 傻架咩

  • @mandonkeyhamsterdy

Do you think you are unique man who was fascinated by different culture. Many many people as you who like different culture. But who like other than their mother as you is only minority.

  • @BAIYUE1 You claim wrongly as usual again. I NEVER say I am unique or something else. I admit I am only one and of course is a minority. You too also are a minority. Every single person does not have the right to claim that he or she represents the majoruty. But you claim EVERYONE loves their mother tongue most, your act shows that you represent the majority in your mind. You have this theory based on what you see and you think what you see is everyone sees which is not right. got it?

  • @BAIYUE1 It is pathetic to see the wrong person always doesn't think think he himself is wrong. =[ I only say i love something other than my own culture, then i was blamed for something I have never done. bad or even fake cantonese haha...

  • @BAIYUE1 From your blaming, I guess you are a person who views your own culture/ own language as the best and most mesmerizing. I appreciate it if that is true. But I really cannot admit your logic that if i love other languages more than my mother tongue, then i am a bad or even fake Cantonese... that really hurts which made me angry coz i never did something to blemish Cantonese... =[ so i got angry... do you understand? I hope so..

  • Ok, so... where is this guy from. 'Cause if he was raised in HK, it's nothing special.

  • omg... he speaks cantonese soooooooooooooo good!

  • damn he speaks cantonese even better than me

  • I can tell he's Caucasian. I am Chinese and speak Cantonese. Not only is this guy speaking correctly in intonation and grammar, but he has the conversational phrasing and attitude that you can't get from a book. Impressive!

  • HKAC?

  • hes the the elder brother of Sandos (HK football palyer) not HKAC

  • Very good! Two thumbs up for this man! (: This is how cantonese sounds like and not what you think it is.

  • Damn, i can't tell that there is even anything odd in his speach~ Upmost respect for you sir~!!

  • oh mymy, this white person speaks perfectly the cantonese, something very rare(most dificult language of the world and the Russian too)...Amazing !!!

  • any one know where he is from ????

    or what is his name

  • lol pro

  • Very good.

  • Good stuff. This guy can actually actually master the intonation system, which is usually the most difficult aspect for anyone who is native speaker of a non-tonal language such as the majority of Indo-European languages.

It's true that Cantonese is very expressive and that its speakers are loud. Come to one of my family meetings!

  • fluent cantonese

  • woooww perfection level!

  • Wow, this white guy is unbelievable. FOr a moment, i was listening and i thought he sounded like one of those old chinese men in the park.

  • YAP JOR JI DAN MEI????!!!!!!!

  • wow, such perfect canto from a gwai lo! ^^

  • 可能佢係香港出世架。。

  • Below is reply to devoutxcynic's question

  • 那些学生担心那个百鬼老师会打死他们!

  • His accent is like a local HK uncle. i won't be able to tell the diff. without knowing tt he is a white guy!!

  • unless he was a native, u know. born from usa parents in hk and raised in hk and all like sharon balcombe...

  • cantonese actually sounds pretty good, I don't really want to learn mandarin

  • Cantonese is a pretty big dialect though. Mandarin is alot less fun to speak than Cantonese, I love the amount of exaggeration in tone that Cantonese people use.

  • But for me it always sounds gross to listen to Cantonese because the speakers are loud, which means noisy & annoying.

  • Cantonese speakers can be smooth and nice too. You just haven't met one yet I guess. Cantonese, and Min Nan Hua are actually more lively and direct southern dialects so you may preceive them as noisy and annoying. Cantonese also has a longer history than modern Han Yu aka 'Pu Tong Hua'. During Tang Dynasty, Mandarin was not even the official language.

  • in Tang Dynasty, Mandarin was just the babarian language in northeast China. It became the official language not over 300 years which begin in Ching Dynasty.

  • i so agree w/ u. i love how we r noisy speakers and a wider span of expressions to use that sound so informal (unless ur watching the hk news...they sound rly weird) but we also have the soft side and all. plus, we dominate usa! we're the main language of chinatown!

  • @jmaccaman im canto and taishangnese, what you say is absolutely true. LOL... i make the language sound like jokes everyday. =)

  • That is a freedom of choice based on personal interest rather than a recommendation.

  • lol hahaa it's cool to see them speak canto ^^

  • u really cant tell teh difference of race if u dun look at the video u think its sum canto guy speaking when cantonese is spoken rite tehre is no such thing as oh his voice sounds white or wat ever i am a shanghai speaker but i know cantonese n ppl think im cantonese

  • My wife recorded this video. The guy has 100% native sounding Cantonese and Native fluency. No body can tell the difference in real life.

To the guy that asked where they play war games, this place is located opposite HK Gold Coast.

    Thanks.

  • @cantehk

I think he has lived in HK for a long period of time. I am a Chinese who speak in Cantonese. He pronunciation is well as a HK people!

  • @cantehk where is HK gold coast like what region?

  • @pippylunalove

West of the New Territories, near a town called Tuen Mun

  • @douglastytam oh okay that makes sense. thx

  • damn he is good! Can't tell the difference at all!!

  • Where do you guys go wargaming?

  • Let's be serious, folks... just because Cantonese is not wildly popular for whites doesn't make it some impossible-to-learn language that nobody studies. Anybody living in HK and Southern China already has a very good incentive to study it, and very many do. Yeah, you can "get by" with English, but who really wants to be a loser at the edge of society who can't talk to the people around them?

  • Amazing. If you don't look at the screen, it's a 1000% authentic Hong Kong guy speaking.

  • what i wrote was a reply to ronlau99's post.

  • gwai lou is a white person/westener right?

  • True

Cantonese called foreigner as gwai low

  • 發音勁準! 勁香港feel!

  • Wow... If only the rest of us could live there a decade or so, we'd all be talking like that. ;p

  • trust me, you don't get an accent like that just by living somewhere a decade or so. probably have to be born and raised in HK.

  • Hm... Yes, there's a chance he was born there. It's hard to tell his level, because in this clip he really only said a handful of phrases, apparently as part of a routine. Even Brian Burrell (布偉傑), who has a normal gwailou accent, sounds pretty good with a script, but he's still a relatively new speaker.

  • well, with a script, you've got a chance to practice, but this is obviously just regular conversation...

I mean, take Gregory Rivers for example, he's been in HK for about 15 years, and his accent still isn't that good...

    either way, *shrug*

  • I have a question: "why is it that when azns speak english its so perfectly normal, but when white ppl speak chinese, its such a surprise?"

  • I totally agree!!!!! Why is that???

  • If the context of your post is really a question,... Azns learn Eng for a better life, cuz it's the international language. It's pratical. There is no practical reason for white people to learn languages other than, say, French, German, Spanish, etc. I know there's a new trend to learn Chinese. But, you still don't expect White people to speak Chinese. Also, many Asian countries has been a colony for European countries. Maybe there are more subtle reasons. But who's going to elaborate?

  • because most of chinese think that all white people are adorable and superior... i am a hk chinese...

  • simple answer really....English is the universal language of the world so of course u need to learn to speak it but cantonese is not...and of sourse it is rare to see some white guy speak cantonese did u really have to ask.....

  • yeah it's because of the status of the languague. there are many other examples. like how many swedish people learn finnish? there is almost none! but there are alot of finnish people that learn swedish!

  • i'm asian...as mention here partially it's because english is a international language...hell my grandma knows how to english (sure with a think accent but she knows)...

it is much more common for asian to know english than the other way around

(this should be common sense, i'm not even sure why you ask?)

    now....actually to be fair

if you show me an asian speaking perfect german i'll be equally impressed

  • There are many asians who speak german fluently

  • There's some difference here. First, Cantonese is much harder to learn than German because of it's very loose grammar structure and hopelessly intricate tonal system. Second, this particular foreigner speaks with absolutely NO foreign accent. He's native cantonese in his intonation and grammar, which is next to impossible as Cantonese is the hardest language to speak without an accent. I should know. I am a 100% Hong Kong cantonese.

  • It's a rarity I think and the other thing is alot of white people can't speak Asian languages well even after living for many year in the country. Also one has to look at the background. If the person was born and raised in the country, grew up speaking the language it would be easier to master the language versus learning it like a typical foreign language learner.

  • Teacher ? why does he keep talking about bullets

  • WOW, his accent is even better than mine

    AND IM CANTONESE

  • Lol, me too, I'm cantonese, but not born in HK and I think this guy has a better accent than mine XD It's always a surprise to see white people speak cantonese, even they are born in HK! :)

I like when he say "Do you understand?! It's cantonese!" XD

  • He must have been born in HK and could not speak a word of English!

  • this guy must have lived in hk twenty years plus to have an accent like that! amazin!!

  • you sure with this quality hes not just a regular chinese guy

  • My wife is the person who took the video. He is 100% white! Its Youtube that causes the quality of the video to be crappy quality.

  • his voice sounds kinda like Anthony Wong

  • @AnsuSeri i thought so too.

  • If I didn't look at the video, I could have sworn it was a native Hong Konger speaking.

  • wow this guy's accent is borderline perfect. seems like a cool and funny guy too!

  • Wow! That's amazing! His Canto is perfect! His accent sounds like a TVB show. lol

  • His accent is like a local HK uncle. Perfect pitch!

  • Wow his canto is amazing did he live in Hong Kong

  • holy fuck his canto is very nice, haha better than mine

  • hahaha. this bloke rocks.

    funny as fuck.

    :)
