  • I used to count lovers like railroad cars I counted them on my side Lately I don't count on nothing I just let things slide

you naughty girl, much respect joni

  • 2:23-2:33 oh maaaaaaan

  • beautiful song

  • Made of granite and marshmallows.

  • Class. Just wonderful.

  • Joni Mitchell Sucks Ass!!!

  • This song is so tangible, and as a painter, Joni knows how to paint her music all over you. Her musical arrangements express her personality, like when she sings "and a bottle of german wine to drink" you hear that playful measure with the horns replying-- as if suddenly distracted -- " whew hew, can't wait". Joni comes through in her material and you get to know the artist before ever talking with her. Hoping all along that one day that dream will come true.

  • When Joni stared growing leaps and bounds musicaly after her straight forward folk era her music became very complex in so many ways. Much of it has become fine wine. Some of it does take some time to unfold and appreciate but once it sinks in its as special and worth while as any popular music has ever been.

  • Joni is the Piccaso of music. Engages your mind and spirit. Discards with the cheap appeal to the emotions. Like Mozart that way. Whe you feel it, and I sure do, it's because it's so beautiful, not so emotional.

  • @terrybeaton So true. Her music creates a lightness in my soul.

  • @terrybeaton Suppose I'm just a sentimental old fool but I now get emotional when I feel it. I feel it everytime I hear Joni..Love the woman and her music!!

  • gorgeous arrangement, amazing lyrics

    crazy sophisticated ....

  • I don't want you to like Joni Mitchell, Steve. If you don't get it, good for you.You stick to what makes you happy.

  • Amen martinjp!

  • There's an awful lot of angry people looking for a place to vent. I pity you, you need to judge an artist against your taste, sad life you live peoples. I like all kinds of music and I don't feel the need to get rude because of something I don't care for or understand. You lack both, go to a chat room for mindless bickering. I AM CANADIAN...HB

  • @philomusic60 I seriously doubt that there are millions of people that like this tripe! By the way your a little gay horse turd eating pootface!! It was the 70's I guess so maybe there are that many people out there that like sucky music! Actually the musicians are good I.e Larry Carlton but he was and is way too talented to work with that winy bitch! Come pootface you gotta admit lyrics like sour grapes is not genius!!

  • @philomusic60 I take that back there was alot of good music recorded in the 70's so there is no excuse for liking this horseshit!!! Bad taste is all I can attribute Joni Mitchell fans of having!!!! Maybe it's all the horse poop you eat that you can't tell when something is unpalatable any more!! Tillm next time Ta Ta fucknuts!

  • Whoever likes this music has bad taste!!!!

  • @steveissosteve

Don't play with the world of Joni lovers, they won't like it :)

It is an interesting experience when one's favorite music gets old and younger people start sneering at it - happens to every generation - hey, love what you like and ignore the rest -

  • @SupernalOne There is alot of older music that is great even the band she used for the album are top notch musicians. I just don't care for her!

  • @steveissosteve

    fair enough - cheers

  • love the musical arrangement on this piece.

  • my next best song on album after help me.

  • amazing song. I go from thinking Court + spark is better, to thinking Hissing Of Summer Lawns is. I can never decide. both albums are next level...

  • i was born in 1973. my dad a hard core pueretorican listened to joni mitchell like crazy. coming up in the early 80's i told my dad "what kind of wak music is this?" he tells me "run dmc, ll cool jay, sugar hill gang etc have listened to joni. so you do the same. and he was right.

  • Such Stories. A very special lady.

  • If you don't like this classic song, from a classic artist, fine. Maybe you are just providing an example of the exact opposite of what this sincere genius gives to the world. Luckily there is more of Joni right here to counter your nonsense. Too bad you don't have enough sense to hear her.

  • whats a madder with you~ pollutin' the universal language...the thread that connects us. music...by speaking poorly of each other. Go to your rooms, the both of ya, put on your head phones and crank it up..and listen until you are humbled. Ya Bastaaaaads. If Ya don't like this music, then listen to something else, and stop the fightin. Neither one of you are that smart., so cut it out..

  • More brilliance from a perfect album. This is what ya call ART.

  • Joni...

  • I love all of Joni's work. Just when you think "Court and Spark" is too commercial, too this, too that.....you hear this again and it's like spun sugar. Yes, this is as "popular" as Joni decided to be, and it's miles better than anything else in its genre. This is when music and Top of the Pops meant something. How it has degenerated into the dreck we listen to these days. We love you, Joni!

  • Damn just had a flash back to college in the 70's thought i was high for a second. Adding this to my ring tone..

  • Isn't it interesting that people who like classic pop/rock still like the 3rd song on the second side of the original album or tape...that's longevity.

  • She is a master singer/songwriter. Love thewhole Court and Spark album! My favorite album ever!

  • She used to count lovers like railroad cars? Geez, Joni, what guy's going to put up with that? Only another musician I suppose. It's like all these people creaming over the very thought of you. How can you tell the real McCoy from the crowd?

  • i love you joni mitchell!!!

  • I'm just discovering Joni Mitchell if you can believe it.

Thanks so much for sharing this here. :)

  • @eleanorayoulateagain good for you! In this case BETTER LATE THAN NEVER!!! Start buying her CD's immediately...Her lyrics are the best book you'll ever read also better than any therapist you could find (and pay for!) Take it from this 58 year old woman who found Joni Mitchell in in the late sixties and was had the greatest honor to see this artist live in 1970!! You will never regret knowing her work.

  • This project was the highth of her career. I love her wit and sense of humor. Her whole thought process is amazing. I guess that sums up what a geniuss is all about.

  • This is my all time favorite of Joni. LOL I keep saying that. But I remember Court and Spark and how the lyrics, the guitar and her presentation in concert was

really a sight to behold. I am featuring this song at my channel but updated.

However, I think it is better.

The guitar she plays on it is a midi'd Parker Sly Artist. It allows her to play different tunings (this song features an open C) on one guitar in concert. According to her friends, Joni can play in 50 different tunings.

  • A phenomenal artist. my daughter's favorite. years ago, i finally bought my daughter her own set of records and the book of lyrics for her 18th birthday because we kept fighting over mine.

  • joni is just so good.

  • thanks for uploading some old Joni stuff.Wish I knew where my old albums where.

  • ...."Jealous lovin'll make you crazy

If you can't find your goodness

    'Cause you lost your heart"....

The lyrics to this song are fantastic....wow she is such a wonderful poet!

  • An underappreciated gem. I love the kind of sleepy, breezy feel of the "Court and Spark" songs.

  • Joni,

I listen to this all the time 2010. Thank You.

  • Why there are not statues built in honor of Joni, I haven't a clue. Her songwriting should be compared to Dylan or The Beatles. Though, a couple of my friends honestly don't care so much for her. I've noticed that, cause I'll overly push Joni on them.

I don't know........It's just that I'd love to discuss her music with someone so being here alone, listening to her songs, I'll comment.

  • So rich sounding - still sends a bit of shiver down my spine. The voice, the guitar - perfect! Love you Joni!

  • Court & Spark

    The Hissing of Summer Lawn

    Hejira

The 3 Joni Mitchell Classics ,infallible Musik of the heart !!

  • What a beautiful genius!!!!!!!

  • Joni is amazing..

  • Cool luv song.JONI RULES.

  • I frequently sing this song on my way to work when I'm running late! :)

Joni, I'm so so glad you are and have been a part of my life for 40+ years now. Thanks for all the beauty, joy, tears and laughter through your incredible music. I think I know just about all your stuff by heart! Cheers and love. =^..^=

  • thank you for posting this, i never ever tire of listening to joni! LOVE this song.

  • The whole album is most excellent. Rare to find where that's the case.

  • "Used to count lovers like railroad cars" good line

  • My second favorite Joni album. They don't write songs like this anymore. Those days are gone forever...

  • Joni Mitchell is like a heroin addiction. While I refuse to give her up myself, I would never inflict her on others. I'll satisfy myself with running into an already established (addicted ) fan but I wouldn't dream on exposing others to her. I LOVE this relatively unheralded genius who will no doubt be recognized hundreds of years from now far more than she is today.

  • Swinging with Mom

  • I think she is talking about James Taylor, but who really cares? It's a fantastic song. "Court and Spark" helped me through my first period of deep depression. Just the sound of Joni's voice, her words, and music gave me the courage and the hope to see it for what it was, and eventually to move through it.

  • Your post touched me. I remember when I first heard this; couldn't beleieve it was her. It was her first album with a backup band. So different from her earlier albums. Sometime listen to Ladies of The Canyon. Very sweet. Music can carry you through some tough times. I'm glad this got you through yours. Goodnight.

  • I remember the day I bought this in 1974 - my first Joni album. I can still picture myself lying on my bedroom floor listening to this everyday after school. I soon bought everything Joni from then on; even a little paperback book that I still have - Joni Mitchell: Her Life, Her Loves, Her Music. This is one of myt all-time fav songs. Joni, you are beautiful inside and out - no one touches you in regards to lyrical and musical output in the rock/pop/folk world. Amen? Amen!

  • This album is a beauty. Why don't people talk about it the way they talk about Laura Nyro's Eli and the Thirteenth Confession or Carole King's Tapestry?

  • the only opinion that really matters is your own.

  • Reminds me of perfect, pretty Jean Keller in '76

  • This is a masterpiece

  • @martinjp1958

    Indeed.

Joni is far more complex in her delivery than it apprehends, at first.

Did you know (I didn't, until recently) that she has smoked cigarettes since she was nine years old?

And her voice is still just amazing.

  • @martinjp1958 I agree! Love the whole Court and spark album! truly a master!

  • @martinjp1958 her best album!

  • in love with tis album <3

  • americans don't often know when their favourite english speaking singer is a Canadian... ;) *Here's one!* :D

  • Can't decide what I love more: the keen (often self-critical) observations of the lyrics, her super clear/strong vocals, or the instrumentals that just all fall together so effortlessly. "I can't find my goodness, I lost my heart" turns the mirror on herself.

  • Comment removed

  • The sound of her voice is remarkable, like no other. Her music is equal to her lyrics. Her beauty is equal to that. Funny, how she doesn't get the credit she deserves. I feel she is one of the top 5 musicians/song writers ever.

  • "...when you can't find your goodness...cuz you've lost your heart..." Joni Mitchell is the quintessential tonic for all souls....

  • One of my all time favorite albums,

and when I turn others on to Joni,I play this one. My friends all play this LP/ CD when they want to feel happy.

  • why are you glad she's a smoker?

  • Oh hi, osahju914, I wrote that in a moment of guilt over my own enjoyment of a clandestine cig every now & then.. you know how it is, misery loves company, and whose company could be more lovable than Joni's!? I'm not really glad anyone's a smoker, it's a truly crummy habit.

  • Joni Mitchell has helped me through many a crisis moment. May the Lord bless her!! Thanks, Joni, especially for deeming the current state of music a cesspool. Plus, I'm glad you're a smoker! I love you, thank you for your wisdom and beautiful songs.

  • true!

  • very happy birthday to you, Roberta Joan

  • "....what are you gonna do now? You've got no one to give your love to.....:

  • yah. 2:26-2:34.

  • one of the most picturesque songs ever written. Court and Spark=Classic album.

  • Once again, thanks for the songs that weren't hits, for those of us who listen to the whole album...

  • I used to count lovers like railroad cars

I counted them on my side

Lately I dont count on nothing

    I just let things slide

    -BRUTAL HONESTY-

  • Modern poet: prolific songwriter. Huge songbook. Unforgettable voice.

  • Beautifully tender lyrical work of art.

  • Joni; one of the best, if not THE best.

  • Sandy requested this song and we both love it an d the whole album. I remember listening to it in the Canary Islands.

  • ... if you can't find your goodness, 'cause you lost your heart. oh. sour grapes because you lost your heart ...

  • Great song! Joni Mitchell's "Court & Spark" album had so many great songs.... Thanks for posting this!

  • Love it!! Was this song about Warren Beatty?? Joni's response to Warren and Carly. So very 1970's Hollywood.

  • The way I've heard it over the years....it was not Warren Beatty that Joni Mitchell referred to in "just like this train"....but David Crosby. Warren Beatty was highlighted in Carly Simon's "You're So Vain". AT least that's the latest skippy ...

  • yes! you're the best! there's no such thing as too much joni mitchell! a thousand thank yous!
