Wow, Tim! That E109 was epic! I can't believe you caught it in daylight! I can't believe that guy that ran the gates on 101 too! Great video, Tim! Another Fav!
@rufec12 Thanks, Rudy. I think that E109 was originally supposed to depart earlier in the morning, but didn't for some reason. When they left Hialeah, I knew it had to be them considering nothing else would leave Hialeah around that time on a Saturday except maybe an O920 if needed. The driver that ran the gates just stared at me while stopped on the tracks as if nothing was going to happen. Not to mention how they had their windows up instead of down.
The engineer on 101 was seconds away from applying the emergency brakes because that motorist refused to move until 101 was near. What she should have done was stop behind the gates as the gates were going down so there would be no risk of an accident.
The worst part about that for me is that I would have been right in the path of the debris had there been a collision. I was literally just seconds away from running for my life before the motorist started to move her car.
What threw me off with the e109 is that csx classify the SB with odd number and the even with NB. Isnt there a 109 with FEC and the counterpart is 208?
Not always. The timing is very sporadic, especially on the coal and rock trains. Most of them seem to run in the night hours when most of us are sleeping. I got lucky with E109 after one of my friends spotted it the previous night on the Homestead Sub.
That's the main reason why I chose to railfan the spots I did when I got the message that coal train E109 was coming my way. I wanted to get the horn on the lead GEVO.
One of the best things about railfanning the FEC is that there are no quiet zones like in many spots on the CSX Miami Subdivision, so you can go to any crossing on the FEC and expect horn action.
Great catch of CSX with those 2 GEVO's. Looks like that's the Florida Rock train that goes all the way west Miami Dade...or maybe that's the one that goes down to the Homestead subdivision...
At any rate, great shots!!! Maybe when I relocate to Miami again I'll meet up with you to catch a few trains myself!!!
Thanks! To correct you though, E109 is a coal train and not a rock train. It's the return of one of the V150 series (V153, V154, V157) to Erwin, Tennessee and then ends up at one of the coal mines in Kentucky.
Ah ok...question though, are those coal cars loaded or empty?? Where are they headed to southbound, are these the loads that are headed to Titan in Medley.
The coal hoppers are empties. The E in E109 indicates that it's an empty coal train. The southbounders (V153, V154, V157) head to Cemex which is just off CSX's Lehigh Spur in Miami.
The coal train that heads to Titan in Medley is the monthly coal train that runs on the FEC, which interchanges from CSX to FEC at Beaver Street in Jacksonville.
Great work, Tim. Rivalled only by one other S FL railfan. Seriously, very good job. One of these nights you'll get the money shot, if I don't beat you to it first. ;-)
I just noticed that minutes ago when reviewing my video that 226 nearly struck a pedestrian around Harrison St.
I did catch 107, but the video would have been too long for YouTube if I added it, so it will start off part 4.
Again, thanks for the heads up on that coal train! Don't feel bad about not being able to catch it when Ted and I did. You were the first to catch it while it was idle on the Homestead Sub.

Amazing long trains in America.
We in Austria have not as long trains, but more different and faster ones.....

But whoever was honking that horn on the unit did a pretty good job, telling them "WE'RE COMING AND WE CAN'T STOP SO QUICK!"

Are these daylight CSX trains frequent in our area?

Damn, not only did 101 have a close encounter, but looks like 226 ALMOST struck a pedestrian! Awesome footage, and did you get 107?
