Recently I have been soldering a plate...to test my project,I firstly ocnnected it to 6v...As it wasn't working,I recalculated all the resistors and other stuff...So I realized that 12v can't do any harm...I connected 12v and suddenly a capacitor exploded..Scared a hell out of me
Yeah, this happened to me when I accidentally reversed the polarity on mine. It was only 12 volts, and the cap was good for 35, but man, did it scare the crap out of my dad!
I used to work in a TV repair shop...I'd blow up some capacitors when I got bored. We had a Variac it's a AC transformer...I'd hook up the cap and slowly bring up the voltage.
Another fun thing to blow up an old speaker...hook it up and it starts vibrating like crazy..then the coil burns up.
my frient put a capacitor in a power strip plugged into an outlet in class today; it sounded like a gunshot when it exploded; it was amazing; i think it destroyed the power strip tho
This happened to me on my brand new ASUS Rampage III Formula doing a stress test. 2 of them blew... it sounded like firecrackers and smelt like shit.... faulty. Ended up RMA to newegg then got another Gigabyte instead. Don't hold it against Asus since this was extremely rare and one time thing (I hope). We all get a faulty part here and there. But damn... the capacitors were touching the heatpipe (not sure this is normal) but the chipset ran like 20c hotter than my Giga. X58 chipset idle ~50c+
lol a week ago when i build up a my 2nd power supply i inverted the Polarity on the cap and it overheated it and then a gas excaped from it and guess what is working as good as new 2200uf maybe less now but who cares it worked!
@leaderofplanet Its nothing overly dangerous, a thin insulator, wound up with aluminum foil, and a bit of electrolyte. Really, the worst injury you could get is from the physical act of the explosion, or hot metal.
Reminds me of when i had an electrolytic one blow in a CB radio i was trying out. There was a loud ping from the can hitting the metal case then smoke poured out of it. Pretty sure the can would've went into orbit if the casing hadn't been there.
How are you going to tell these capacitors' children that you killed their mom-cap or dad-cap with this horrible, inhumane abuse? Is it worth the millisecond thrill to utterly destroy a capacitor family? I think not.
@ard5608 DC, with incorrect polarity. but an elco can build up excessive (over) charge and blow up, from proper-polarity AC spikes to, so think about the sine wave-s actual maximum voltages when using them to smooth some rectified AC.
@ard5608 with electrolytic capacitors like they're using you can only use DC or something bad will happen. (no idea what.) Also, you can only use DC to build up a charge in capacitors because otherwise the net voltage is basically 0.
Did this once at college with a tantalum bead cap. Cut a slit in a tennis ball, drew a face on it, shoved cap inside and slowly ramped up a reverse voltage across it. It broke down before any explosion occurred letting out a kind of weird gasp of steam that was was greenish brown that slowly wafted out the mouth of the ball. It was cool. Also overpowered a smoothing cap that was soldered in board. it took off like a rocket leaving its legs behind LOL
well, if we are chatting about electrolytic cap.s. how you call it in a short form? I wrote earlier in my comment "el-co", but I guess that not OK in the english speaking world. In hungary, the engineering tech-speak is mostly comes from German, el-co is from "elektrolytkondensator", it's "elektrolit kondenzátor" in hungarian, and therefore it's called "elkó" in tech-speak. And how about there? :) el-co is not correct in english, I think.
@od8086 We use elco too. It comes from the dutch elektrolytische condensator. In English it would be el-ca from electrolytic capacitor. Just guessing here... most english people I know use caps. But it is less precise because it could also be a ceramic or tantalum etc. capacitor.
@od8086 - With capacitors, there is no short term for "electrolytic" in English, we just say the word. Possibly because "electro" is already so overused that any short form would cause confusion.
Yeah it was particularly sour tasting, and it did sting the eyes, I had to ventellate my dorm room with a fan and open up the door and window, lol. Vaporized acid is some nasty stuff.
ah, so it had the same effect as too much airspray? it gets into the air but theres so much of it you manage to catch it on your tongue. this is why i tend to do experiments outside :P but i can understand how that would be hard in a dorm.
@nickn5 They never used PCBs in electrolytic condensers they used always used borax compounds and aluminum. Some of the oil filled condensers supposedly used PCBs but very rarely and mostly in high voltage equipment, the regular ones just used mineral oil.
@od8086 I had a similer incident with a LR33 button cell donkey kong game & watch battery, I charged it with 9vdc when I was a kid and it me straight in the middle of the forehead
