I was also at this amazing concert - some of the best versions of his songs I've ever heard were played that night. Remember it like it was yesterday...
By far, my favorite version of this song. Clapton's back-up guitarists are always brilliant: mark knopfler, phil palmer and tim renwick are great examples of them.
To expound on kc1921's story about where the song got it's name and 'hook':
When Eric and George were working up the song, George wrote "where is my bridge?" (A bridge in a song is like a chorus or break) This got mis-read as "Where is my badge?"
According to Wikipedia he retired his (Blackie) stratocaster after this concert in Hartford Ct in 1985 due to issues with the neck.Sounds pretty good to me.
I was at this show!! I still have the ticket in my collection. We did not know it was going to be filmed until we saw a sign on the door walking in that said "You are being filmed for MTV" I have the vhs and just recently converted it to DVD. The show was long. He did at least 2 extended encores. The video edited out a few of the tunes but most of the standards are there.
I like to think from a few interviews by decent Journalists of Marcy and others that his solos were this perfect and that this playing was heard in the seventies instead of the drunken yet still Eric seventies that still have to be listened to on the little we have of the seventies touring shows. The shit you cant get no tab for mate ....its Eric. Though his playing went sick and in its own direction somehow, he knows what he likes...
Mistake, big time.... It was before George died. He quit the Beatles for 2 years, to go to India, so Clapton and Ringo finished some songs George left Eric in a box.
Clapton is often known to let others "take over". He is not a concieted showboat, and wants others to stand out aso. He knows how to share the stage. I read his book, "Clapton", and you get a real good understanding of him. "Badge" was written by George Harrison, and EC compiled it after george died.
George Harrison died at the end of 2001. Badge was written in 1968 with George Harrison and Ringo Starr. It was on Cream's final album "Goodbye". The reason they called it "Badge" was because when Ringo came over and looked at the written song, he thought he saw the word "Badge and he asked why did they have it there? EC and GH cracked up because it was supposed to read that it was the bridge in the song, but GH's handwriting was so bad it looked like badge
I guess if you like overly technical guitar playing, Renwick outplayed Clapton. He probably played the solo as rehearsed as this was, every night . I'll take Clapton's, thanks.
Blakie was autioned by Christies' Auction for $954,5000. The money went to Clapton's rehab , The Crossroads Center, in Antigua. Music Center won the auction, and made a deal with Fender to exactly copy 400 units, with EC's help, for $26,000 each. The current Blackies go for $1,300, and Blackie is at Crossroads Center with Brownie.
I've read in his biography, that he still keeps the original blackie in his home in Britian, he dont like to play it, cause blackie seems him too important - obvisiously she was craftet by Harrison, so...
Tim Renwick's solo here is better than Clapton (as was George Terry's on OGWT in '77 also on utube periodically). I heard or read somewhere that Hartford '85 was the last time Blackie was used. Cheers.
He didn't retire Blackie Till 87', Ithought, not sure on that though. I believe this was the last concert "Brownie" was used, which he played Layla and forever man on, from this concert.
I have that dvd. Tim is the shit and you all can call me a prick, asshole, shithead or what ever but Tim Renwick's guitar solo just took a mighty shit on Clapton. Watch Cocaine live (this concert). It is undeniable and people keep defending Clapton even when the absolute truth shows the world how very skilled Tim is to Eric. They both solo in that video and you can decide for yourself!
I agree that Tim definitely had the hot hand that night - you could see EC was loving it! - IMHO it shows that EC isn't concerned about others grabbing the light, if the music is great - notice in Layla, Tim had the Lead line. i think EC noticed TIM was HOT and gave him more front time.
This is true. EC is a very generous man when it comes to sharing the stage. Still, EC has upped his game in the past few years and is a more exciting performer as a result.
Tim Renwick is good, but is no match for the master, as far as him having a better lead than Clapton on this track is excuse the expression, absolute bollocks !!!
I saw the live 85 concert on tv soon after the video release and bought the video, I've watched it scores of times and claptons solos still blow me away every time, seen him play live twice, back in 89 and again just last year, but I would have loved to have been at the Hartford Connecticut concert cause the atmosphere and his playing looks out of this world !
The second guitarist is a guy called Tim Renwick, he later became a regular member of the Pink Floyd touring band. He took over here from Steve Cropper who had to pull out due to other commitments.
Really liked Cream.I remember in Oct.68,they were in Det.I think on their farewell tour.Tigers had just won the Series,I was a senior at Pershing High in Det.I had just started a weekend job at the Ponchatrain Hotel. Was being shown around by a friend who worked there. We were on the first floor.I looked and saw Ginger Baker waiting for an elevator, told my friend who he was.He was either staying there,or visiting someone.Couldn't stop to get his autograph, wish I did, even if it meant getting fired.
I really like this version. I don't like the mid-80s. Everything was crap. Hair, clothes, attitude but this is a very tidy version of a great old song.

Tim Renwick as back up is my favorite version of this tune. But for some reason the audio on this track is sub-par. would someone care to remix it?

Blakie was solely boilt from 3 strats. He bought 6, gave one to Stevie Winwood, George Harrison, and Pete Townsend.

I really like Eric's solo on this. Almost no effects and a nice clean Strat sound. Not so keen on his 90s sound with the active pickups, etc.
