funloverpeeps....ou are so right! Laura was awesome! And the Laura of the television program was FAR MORE interesting than the dull girl of the books. Thank God Michael Landon, a truly gifted and feeling man, had the sense and wisdom to follow the books LOOSELY. :-)
@ihave90days what do u mean? in the fifth season they meet the orphan albert in winoka, and later adopt him, but other than that they don't have a true, biological son..although albert is treated like he's their son.
@tmwalkerm I know they had a son, but because he didn't survive, he wasn't there for future episodes..and that's why I answered their question with Albert was their only "son" :)
@TheCourtney666 you're you, and laura's laura...all people act different when faced with different situations. back then, there were a lot of pressures toward having a son to carry on your name, so it was a different experience having a son over having a daughter (still same in much of the world today). so, all those pressues got to her and, having a bit of a selfish personality (although later she redeems herself by asking God to replace her with baby Charles), she was jealous of her brother.
My mom and I have been working on a garden, and I cautioned her not to use much Miracle-Grow. She thinks she's no what she's doing and blows me off. Can someone help me find the episode where Charles Ingalls uses Miracle-Grow HAHA I bet that's how he got all his food too LOL
u must read this. once you have started there is no turning. a little 10 year old girl was raped and murdered in 1945. her body was not found until 1947. then a boy last week read this and did not copy and paste this message. the dead girl appeared in his room haunting him and killed him. if you do not copy and paste this onto 10 videos in 30 minutes the dead girl will appear in your room tonight and haunt you and kill you. well you better start to copy
this TV drama was very nice 2. just like The Waltons. the 2 differences between this one and The Waltons was #1: Little House on the Prairie premiered on NBC-TV in 1974, when The Waltons premiered 2 years earlier in 1972 on CBS-TV. #2: This TV drama take's place in the 1860's or 1870's and The Waltons took place in the 1920's or 1930's.
Thank goodnes Michael Landon embellished the books because Frankly, they are boring as hell. And if he hadn't, we wouldn't have this INCREDIBLEY ACTED AMERICAN CLASSIC. Fuck all you shorsigher assholes.
@chukurulugai in the past sons were very important it is true and boys were more wished than girls. But it was stupid because boys come from ladies, and a child is the fruit of a man and a woman. So women are necessary, without women no men.
What they should have done was show Caroline's pregnancy the entire time through a season-long term. I think that would have had more impact on the audience when the baby passed away.
Ahh, when i first saw this episode (when i was lil) I thought Laura was laughing when she found out her baby brother was dead :( SHe sure looks like it :( :( :( :( :(
Isn't in funny in these times.... they're having sex, but she's embarassed at telling him she's going to have a baby and has to "beat about the bush" to tell him.
Pa has always wanted a son. Laura is not a brat, just a regular little girl. When she hurts Bandit, (Which by the way there never was a real Bandit) she was acting out of hate toward god for taking away jack. No, it definitely wasnt right at all, but we all do things we're not proud of, and this was one of those moments for her.
@funloverpeeps yes it is regular and common for little children to hate a new born baby because they are afraid not be loved anymore. It is very normal!all children feel that, love and hatred.
You know, you people need to stop saying that Laura is a brat and that shes spoiled. For one thing, this is the show, and it is WAY different from the books and her actual life. The producers only made it seem this way to attract audience members to make more money and to make it seem more dramatic. Second, you are being too hard on her. Any child her age would have acted the same when a new baby was born. Why didnt she act that way when carrie was born you could ask? Because this is a son and
I LOVE Little House on the Prairie!!! It is amazing and i have read every one of her books, and all of her mother;s, grandmother's, daughters', and great-grandmother's books. I am like obssessed with the show and the books. Although i dont like it when the show starts to vear off track from the books like when those other kids come in and when the show generally isnt little house anymore. Other than that I love them and this is my favorite show out of all the seasons!
Laura didnt write about her brother because it was roo painful to write about. Same reason that she didnt write about when and where Grace was born, she kind of just had her appear in the next book.
@fancyfluffy the Ingalls actually did have a son in real life though. Laura just never mentioned him in the books. The son was really named Charles Ingalls Jr. and he did die as an infant, but all the stuff about Laura being jealous and running away was made up for the show, and didn't happen in real life.
@CherryFrog321 I may just be getting the wrong information but I thought the baby's name was Frederick? That's simply what I researched, I could be wrong
@aenjgeal Frederick was his middle name- his full name was Charles Frederick Ingalls, and in real life, he was called Freddy, I believe. On the show though it appears that he was just Charles.
@CherryFrog321 That's right.Poor baby took the name of his father and his mother's stepfather Frederick Holbrook. In the real life he died 9 months after his birth. His death was the first from a small curse of the Ingalls family.Laura's baby boy died also a few weeks after he was born and the same happened to Laura's baby grandson(son of Laura's daughter).
@fancyfluffy And although the son is not in any of Laura's books, there is a book about Laura called "Old Town in the Green Groves" written by a different author, that was supposed to tell about the events that took place in that period of Laura's life that she left out of her books. And I remember there being a chapter about the baby.
I felt for Dr. Baker in this episode, unable to do anything for this poor sick baby. There was a line he says as he's walking out the door which wasn't in the clip...something to the effect of a country doctor feels so useless. Back in those days, often they just had to watch their patients die, often little babies, like baby Charles.
amazing people back then actually welcomed a baby ,lol i know now a days there are alot of unexpected miracles, i'm being sarcastic in case you can't tell
... I recall one Laura Ingalls book in which they finally got a cow. And after milking enough to fill one cup... they all watched as Baby Carrie drank it all up. They gave it to her as she probably needed it the most. Same with Christmas gifts. When times were tight, the youngest got the most spoiling.
It's not "ok" but I understand jealousy from anxiety is just normal to a degree. Every kid needs reassurance that they still matter as much. :-)
Every family situation is so unique. In their time... a son was much needed for practical, survival purposes. The son would get to spend all the time with the father learning men's work. And in any family, the baby has to have top priority from the parents. The more kids, the more time is divvied out and the less each one gets.
In the books, they never had a son. Laura was nice to her siblings. But kids grew up at young ages. The babies got the Christmas gifts, the only milk, etc.
A daughter was also much needed to help around the house with chores and with the younger children. A mother of say eight or nine could not keep the house clean, have food prepared for every meal for all of them, and take care of all of them without some help from older siblings. Although sons were valued back then, daughters were valued just as highly.
Laura was somewhat of Pa's favorite out of his children. Pa and Laura the most alike, so they were closer. Laura was used to her father paying attention to her all the time, and when he started to pay more attention to the baby then to her, she got jealous. She was only five or six, and she didnt understand why this baby came and took her father "away" from her. Just because YOU wouldnt be jealous, doesnt mean that others wouldnt be either.
@funloverpeeps I think she's supposed to be like 8 or 9 in the first season...she was definitely older than 5/6 (I believe Melissa was actually 10 when this episode was filmed). But I agree, she was still just a kid so I think people are being a little hard on her.
Laura didn't annoy me in this episode at all. Sure, she was extremely selfish, but these episodes depict her earlier years when she was naive and a little selfish at times.
I do think she matures later on in the series, actually.
This isn't the complete episode. There are parts missing. It's not possible to fit the length of a Little House episode in only three parts. I believe others have posted the complete episodes. There are usually 5 parts.
Michael Landon picked the cutest babies (twins) to play the part of "Charles Ingalls Jr. I am not sure if anyone is aware of it, but due to child labor laws, for rolls that called for babies, they had to use twins .. hence, Mary Kate/Ashley Olsen
KaseyAkira, I believe YOU are delusional!! Why do you think Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen are so popular? ... it's because they BOTH were actors on Full House! Don't give me that "show me the law crap!" YOU look it up, or shut up!!
the child labor laws only allow children to work so many hours and THAT is why these shows use twins so they can get time from each child and make production much faster!!!! that would be discrimination if they HAD to use twins!!
You know when I first watched that ep. I didn't know Grace's also a volunteer midwife, and I didn't think the girls shouldn't be around during labour. All-in-all this is the saddest ep. and I felt sorry for Mrs. Ingalls, I mean someone that was...well part of you for 9 months then suddenly it dies
ok, I think everyone is being a bit too hard on little Laura here, she is just a child after all, I am sure if all of you think very hard, you can remember things that you have done as well that were not perfect.
As the specialist was explaining to Charles and Caroline that there was no treatment available, the Baby took a turn for the worst and died in the hospital.
But think about it, at that age, she doesn't really understand. The only reason she want's her pa's attention, was because she thought he didn't love her anymore. Well, with him talkin about the baby, it is natural for a girl that age to feel, i dont know, unloved, or left out. Things like that.
thats true enough but laura was far from unloved. have u seen the episode 'fagin' in the 5th season when shes jeaolous of the way pa is paying a lot of attention to albert. she acts more or less the same again!
customed to having Pa pay attention to her. I mean, you have to admit, in all the episodes, it does look like Laura is his favorite. He even has a nickname for her. Does he have one for Kary, or Mary? Oh well.
I saw that episode of "Fagin" and geez. In my opinion, Laura can be so selfish sometimes; thinking of herself. Have you also seen the episode "Castoffs" where her dog Jack dies? She annoys me in that episode more.
yeh i know what u mean. she was really horrible to bandit especially when he follows her to town. she throws a stick at him. dont know if u heard but i heard a yelp!
THank you. I also forgot to mention that she should have realised that any other dog in need of love and attention is just as important as Jack once was. I hated to hear that yelp. It just showed that she was being selfish all over again and never regrets her actions until it is nearly too late. What a shame. Did she think that being horrible to Bandit would bring Jack back from the grave. I didn't think so.
Well said. I couldn't agree with you more. I hated to hear that yelp as well. That was awful and it's actually abuse. Laura always feels guilty about something. She's worse when she's grown. To a point, she's a lot like Mrs. Oleson.
Laura acts without thinking a lot of the time. She's probably worse when she grows up. By then, while being totally irrational she smashed the special plate her mother gave her after promising to take care of it. I can't watch that part. It's too horrific.
Her mother gave her a special plate? What was the name of that episode? And I agree about her being irrational when she's grown. I just saw the episode "Divorce, Walnut Grove Style" where she keeps on overreacting believing Almanzo is having an affair, despite hearing him say that music was the only thing he and that other girl had in common.
You are so right. Laura's quick to jump to conclusions. When she found out for herself that Almonzo and the other girl only had music in common, she really felt stupid. She tried to apologize to the other girl and the other girl wouldn't hear her out. Serves her right. Ma gave Laura a special plate in the episode "Days Of Sunshine, Days of Shadows" where she gave birth to Rose. The special plate was a gift because she had the baby.
why did you leave out most parts? its not as good without some parts. like the part where grace seys,"do ya her her?" "its a girl?" "no its a boy" and charles gets all lovey with the baby. and it doesn't show any of the baby's life. i am just asking why???
...when did caroline and charles ever had time to fool around i wonder o.O"

You know when I first watched that ep. I didn't know Grace's also a volunteer midwife, and I didn't think the girls shouldn't be around during labour. All-in-all this is the saddest ep. and I felt sorry for Mrs. Ingalls, I mean someone that was...well part of you for 9 months then suddenly it dies

I would feel so guilty too if I was Laura!

ok, I think everyone is being a bit too hard on little Laura here, she is just a child after all, I am sure if all of you think very hard, you can remember things that you have done as well that were not perfect.
jessica19832004 3 years ago
yup=]
MissFit0191 3 years ago
A part was cut out. The part where Laura says "I hope God wants a girl."
TwinCamSaturn 3 years ago
They should have stretched Caroline's pregnancy over most of Season 01 as it would have been even more powerful in what was to happen.
TRAVISJAMES03 3 years ago
I was born in 1970. I thought that Laura was Mary and Mary was Laura. I noticed the mistake when the sho ended:)

i had just had my daughter when i saw this episode so i was an emotional wreck for a few days, lol...so sad! ugh...couldn't imagine.
pittydirl 3 years ago 3
Laura never wrote about this in her book, it was too sad. And Laura is being such a brat in this, she has 2 sisters already...
detachedlegs2 3 years ago 5
how do they know it happened if she didn't tell it?
wadyano 3 years ago
She told it in her biography. Did you even read the books? This show is NOTHING like the books.

the baby just wasn't growing anymore. I dont really know exactly what it was but he just died because he wasn't growing.
npulotu 4 years ago
What exactly did the baby have?
AngeliHoney 4 years ago
was he already dead at 8:12? was that why they cried? cos all they said was he's gone to sleep easily.
2artemis2 4 years ago
He was. "He's gone to sleep, hasn't he?", is a euphemism for dying
KayLillian 4 years ago
ok, thanks. so i guess that's why they were crying
2artemis2 4 years ago
As the specialist was explaining to Charles and Caroline that there was no treatment available, the Baby took a turn for the worst and died in the hospital.

laura annoys me in this episode. shes being so spoilt waanting pa's attention all to herself
jecka1982 4 years ago 3
your right jecka1982. She was just being a brat.
But think about it, at that age, she doesn't really understand. The only reason she want's her pa's attention, was because she thought he didn't love her anymore. Well, with him talkin about the baby, it is natural for a girl that age to feel, i dont know, unloved, or left out. Things like that.
Susany131 4 years ago
thats true enough but laura was far from unloved. have u seen the episode 'fagin' in the 5th season when shes jeaolous of the way pa is paying a lot of attention to albert. she acts more or less the same again!
jecka1982 4 years ago
ah. True, true. But, I guess she is just to
customed to having Pa pay attention to her. I mean, you have to admit, in all the episodes, it does look like Laura is his favorite. He even has a nickname for her. Does he have one for Kary, or Mary? Oh well.
Susany131 4 years ago 3
I saw that episode of "Fagin" and geez. In my opinion, Laura can be so selfish sometimes; thinking of herself. Have you also seen the episode "Castoffs" where her dog Jack dies? She annoys me in that episode more.
Disneyfan82 3 years ago 4
yeh i know what u mean. she was really horrible to bandit especially when he follows her to town. she throws a stick at him. dont know if u heard but i heard a yelp!
jecka1982 3 years ago 3
I heard the yelp too. That was just awful. But you and Disneyfan82 are both right. Laura can be very selfish at times.
TwinCamSaturn 3 years ago 2
I agree with Laura being selfish at times. She's worse when she's grown. It's like she grows up to be a real b----.
TwinCamSaturn 3 years ago
Disneyfan82 3 years ago
Well said. I couldn't agree with you more. I hated to hear that yelp as well. That was awful and it's actually abuse. Laura always feels guilty about something. She's worse when she's grown. To a point, she's a lot like Mrs. Oleson.
TwinCamSaturn 3 years ago
Laura acts without thinking a lot of the time. She's probably worse when she grows up. By then, while being totally irrational she smashed the special plate her mother gave her after promising to take care of it. I can't watch that part. It's too horrific.
TwinCamSaturn 3 years ago
Her mother gave her a special plate? What was the name of that episode? And I agree about her being irrational when she's grown. I just saw the episode "Divorce, Walnut Grove Style" where she keeps on overreacting believing Almanzo is having an affair, despite hearing him say that music was the only thing he and that other girl had in common.
Disneyfan82 3 years ago
You are so right. Laura's quick to jump to conclusions. When she found out for herself that Almonzo and the other girl only had music in common, she really felt stupid. She tried to apologize to the other girl and the other girl wouldn't hear her out. Serves her right. Ma gave Laura a special plate in the episode "Days Of Sunshine, Days of Shadows" where she gave birth to Rose. The special plate was a gift because she had the baby.
TwinCamSaturn 3 years ago
It did serve her right. And that kind of attitude made her keep breaking the windows Pa was trying to put up. THanks for the friend invite.
Disneyfan82 3 years ago
You are so right! It did serve her right.
You're welcome for the friend invite. I also have another name - greensaturn1995. I'll send you an invite from that account too.

why did you leave out most parts? its not as good without some parts. like the part where grace seys,"do ya her her?" "its a girl?" "no its a boy" and charles gets all lovey with the baby. and it doesn't show any of the baby's life. i am just asking why???
