  • I agree with you, PIPSPROF. What a voice!

  • bravo islandofgrass - you've got it in one!!! He IS on the pedestal of great tenors - no doubt. Agree with SDVUHLAP too - the best ever.

  • bravo islandofgrass - you've got it in one!!! He IS on the pedestal of great tenors - no doubt.

  • The ideal role for Jose Carreras and not only because his name is in the role.

In my opinion, Don Jose should possess some of the qualities of a lyric tenor with the same strength as a spinto. Carreras has just the voice. He hits the Bb pianissimo EXACTLY how Bizet intended it to be. His french is spot on, and doesn't make the same mistakes you can find with other singers with pronunciation.

    Bravo Carreras!

  • Baltsa bad but i love jose

    ]

  • fantastic !!!

  • I do like Carreras' acting, but I hate the way he approaches the high Bb.

  • A beautiful voice - velvet and mercury. Nice interpretation ... My soul cries with Don Jose ... Thank you, Maestro...

  • I keep coming back to this aria on YouTube. Some of the most moving singing I've ever heard. Wonderful control at the end.

  • His voice already developed a wobble here when he was still pretty young& the vocal line is all stretched out.His falsetto is not impressive.I guess his beautiful quality of voice overshadows these short comings. For me the role is just to heavy for him.The rubberneckers approve and maybe thats what counts. This is the 1st & last time I will listen to this. I;d rather hear Corelli Tucker DelMonaco Martinelli DiStefano Bjorling Lanza Zenatello Gigli. Just about anyone else.

  • @sugarbist

Strangulated and pushed - the Bb was embarrassing!

  • @TheKyomu2010 i know Thanks for responding

  • i think that the Carreras' version is better than Placido Domingo

  • Muy lindo ..

  • POOR JOSE. I wish he didn't get sick. What a voice, what potential!!

  • hmm... great acting? I suppose if wandering back and forth with clenched fists is great acting then Pavarotti was John Barrymore! lol. But seriously, i loved the way he morphed into Mel Torme for the climactic high B!

  • Ah,how wonderful ...bravo bravo!!!

  • Brilliant singing, especially the pianissimo at the end.

  • HE IS DON JOSE !!!!!

  • Great Voice

  • Meilleure interprétation que Kaufman.

  • Bravo Jose--I just love your singing--for a very long time, it has meant so much to me.

  • this one shows some cleavage too.

  • Those were strong Bravos! from the audience

  • I love it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • thank you carreras, i'm a tenor as well but you are the best

  • Carreras never seems to know what to do with his hands, and always ends up holding them blandly at his sides. Hmm.

  • Excellent

  • Is Carmen awake??? She doesn't even blink!!! Fortunalely for Carreras he doesn't need any help!!!!

  • I love him at 2:08..he gets settled in to perform the signature of this aria.

  • nice cleavage, but is she alive?

  • Between them, Domingo definitely has the more reliable--albeit less refined--vocal technique, and a noticeably more powerful upper register. His middle register is middling at best, however, which is precisely where most of tenor singing takes place. This is where Carreras excels, and why, in his day, he' was a greater tenor than either Pavarotti or Domingo. Listen to his 70's Verdi and some of the songs and arias he recorded during the early 80's--he has no real competition.

  • @djs259 I agree with you completely. In those early recordings you can tell what an exceptional voice he had.

  • @6061649 I have enough High School Spanish to translate this and I agree with you. Fortunately I have no technical musical training so I can't criticize, I just enjoy!

  • @NKWIAM it is in French you dolt!

  • @mte603 I didn't mean the opera, I was talking about a post 6061649 wrote in Spanish.

  • Absolutely Amazing..... There never such Magician of Music as young Carreras...!!!

    God Bless You, Hose!

    He is really the one...

  • bravo maestro!!!grandissssimo

  • @3:31 -siiiiiigghh!

I know it's silly, but everytime I watch this recording, I can't help but feel OCD about Baltsa's necklace being off center. I guess it jumps out at me while they zoom in at the end. :P

  • simply perfect and incredibly emotional

  • M.A.E.S.T.R.O. BRAVO!!!!!

  • ヽ(|||≧▽≦|||)/

  • DON JOSÉ CARRERAS!

  • verdaderamente ESPECTACULAR!

  • 2:28- 2:36 is what I'd like to call a musical orgasm.

  • @evilsushix how was it for you? Did the earth move? lol

  • Listen to that crowd! This aria was once called "perfect", and we can hear why. There is no doubt he deserves to be on the pedestal of great tenors; he had great chops once. This may or may not be his best, but he has plenty of fans moved by his intense stage craft and soaring notes. I prefer a full voice on that Bb, but Bizet was clear: sing it softly and intensely. And Carreras gave us his best. Did anyone notice how much he drooled (1:51 and 3:12)? At his juiciest, in more ways than one!

  • This was one of Carreras' signature roles like it or not folks

  • ok man we got it!!I hear him and it`s good, but not to compare with Carreras!!And you starting to be boring writing this on every Flower aria on you tube!!!

  • Not only is he as good, he is better! Just because he isn't famous YET, doesn't mean that he is any less good. As for posting on every Flower aria, I think I will post on EVERY ARIA. that way you can see his name every where you look.

  • @10rfan What a stupid comment!!Why would i look at your comment ??Man i didn`t say that he isn`t better cause he is not famous. He just isn`t better. He wouldn`t be better if he is famous like Caruso, cause that`s not the point!!

  • @Huljic - I guess you must like pushed, uncontrolled singing. So you must love this video as that is all he does here. The crowd is applauding his fame not his rendition. His piano at the end is nothing more than falsetto. Cheap!

There is no doubt that when Carreras was at his peak his voice was probably the most beautiful to listen to, but he never had control of it and he sang all the wrong rep. As proof he is no longer able to sing well and hasn't been able to since before he fell ill.

  • @10rfan

    Ahh opinion is yours ok...

But pushed and uncontrolled ,no!!He had leukemia not a flu so he really could be with his best after that! But ok again your opinion ! I can`t write any more:)

  • The best Don Jose ever!

  • Although I love Mr. Carreras in other recordings, I do no think this is his best performance. Domingo and Kaufman seem to be more in control of this aria. There is a LOT of yelling in here and the rubati sound artificial and. The orchestra sounds thick and slow, uncomparable to Vienna/Kleiber or Paris/Domingo.

  • You know, he has got fantastically bright notes in his voice....

I feel the sun, coming up from the horizont..

    And you?)

  • Es taaan precioso...

  • 3:28 - 3:36... ¡Hermoso!

  • 3:27 to 3:36: so lyrical. I always wanted to hear a tenor sing that high Bb like that.

  • Listen to Jon Vickers sing it. He's amazing. The score actually calls for pianissimo for that phrase. But not many tenors can sing it that way so they blast it.

  • I just love this. I have the DVD and it is nearly worn out! Josep was put on this earth to play Don Jose.

  • such pure expression of frustration and love oscilliating ,desperation, spurned and yet still imbibed with the love he cannot get out of his inner self....its so manifested even I as don't understand a word of French!!

  • His emotion trumps other 'acting' in operatic performances. Agnes Baltsa was so FANTASTIC in the performance.

She was so convincingly cruel and uncaring about those entrapped by

her fleeting feelings. A black spider!

    Dancing while singing perfectly -WOW!

    Josep's piannissmo ascending phrase

at 3:26 sent chills up my spine. I think this

is a definitive Carmen perfomance. I had it on video, and never tire of it.

  • Yes. I still say Jose. I'm not saying I don't adore Placido's voice, I just think Jose's acting was slightly better. He seems more hurt and more desperately in loe with Carmen.

AB

  • I just watched the Placido Domingo version and I still say Jose Carreras is better.

  • You can't just "say" Jose Carreras is better. Jose and Placido are 2 of the best tenors of our generation. You can see that their interpretations are very different. Here Jose opted to falsetto for the high Bb, after finishing his staging. Placido sang the Bb at full voice and starting kneeling at the same time which is VERY hard to do vocally. However in the score it's supposed to be a pianissimo Bb which is even harder to do full voice. So it's a matter of taste not who's better than who.

  • @nestersg Jose Carreras rules!!

  • @nestersg I would have to agree with you...certainly not to take away from Maestro Domingo. But, I just feel Carreras brought a natural elegant lyricism to the role of Don Jose.

  • dieci anni prima era un' altra cosa...

  • How could Carmen not run to him? Such passion, such beauty, such intense lpassion and love!

  • Bravooooooooooooo!

  • Sa voix est trop legere.

  • Trop legere?

  • Dammit. I've tried and tried but I can't watch this video without crying. No one phrases in this aria with more tenderness and passion than Carreras. Simply heartbreaking.

  • I agree...I haven´t cried but I think this interpretation really comes from his heart, and it´s thrilling...I do not care if people think his voice sucked or if his techinique did...this is great...if I´d been Carmen...I would have lost it all right there and then

  • His tone isn't as focused or as full as one would like in Don Jose, but he WAS, after all, in the midst of chemotherapy for leukemia at the time of this telecast. I DO like his phrasing in the aria; WELL DONE!!!!! Nice head tone on the last B-flat; quite the achievement (done by McCracken, too, in the 1970's at the Met). Levine and the orchestra are wonderful to listen to. I like the "dead-pan" on Baltsa through the aria; to this Carmen, all that passion is "just words." Thanks for sharing.

  • He had LEUKEMIA and he sang this?!?!?

Everyone needs to cut this guy some slack.

"Oh sorry, I'm not singing at my utmost best today because I have LEUKEMIA YOU FUCKING RETARD."

  • his leukemia came 2 years later

  • Beautiful voice! Plus he looks like Marlon Brando. Gorgeous.

  • Oh my good. It's right. Also his face expressions are similar to Brando

  • hahaha what is wrong with that bitch? is she living?

  • what in the world is she doing. i hope she sings way better than she acts.

  • Comment removed

  • wow, his mouth opens really wide!

however--that is a out of color, off the cords sound and really falsetone--why not,if you are going to sing pp there, sing the rest of the markings throughout the aria? well, anyway, enjoy it if you like it...

  • Comment removed

  • OMG! This is one of my favorite renditions of the flower song. Who plays this Don Jose?

  • Jose Carreras.

  • interessant d'ecouter un espagnol parler francais.remarquable interpretation.j'aime bcp Jose Carreras.carmen aurait pu manifester un peu plus d'emotion

  • Lovely!

    Thank you!

  • is Carreras not hitting that last high note on purpose? please someone explain me detail. because I saw him castrating that high note at 1994 world cup. or is it because its tough for him. I suppose he cut it on purpose for his own interpretation

  • as stated before, the score calls for pp, but, italian tradition has the beginning softly, and the end forte. hope that helps.

  • what does pp mean?

  • pp means pianissimo (softly).

  • thank you for your words

  • you are welcome! :o)

btw, a pp Bb (the last high note) is difficult for any tenor. :) IMO.

  • Ahhhhh!!! que cosa!!! para mi1!!! NADIE COMO ESTA VOZ PARA ESTA ARIA !!!

  • bien dicho.

  • Oh, it's so lovely! 3:30, especially!

  • or at 4:11 or 4:20...

  • Tired of Domingo this Domingo that, expressive singer yes, , very average high notes, bad technique(cant stand seeing that tongue in the air). A good singer, but nowhere near one of the greats. Carreras is way better, more full, colourfull timbre, just a much better voice. Great interpretation of this aria!!!

  • isn't that whay music is about though- expression?... granted, I will completely agree that Domingo does not have a strong technique, or great high register, i'll even go as far to say he is highly overrated... but he has the rare ability to reach the listener through his music, and puts so much passion and soul into every note he sings..thats what makes him unique...

  • just...wonderful. made me cry at the end.

  • Who is Jussi Bjorling? CARRERAS NOT CARREARAS sing with the heart not only voice and sound.

The perfect technic not enough for sing love aria like this

  • and also Giuseppe Di Stefano can I hear in this aria but nobody other!!!!! I've hear Bjorling...not convincing for nothing!

  • you know Carrera's idol was the great "Pippo" DiStefano. That is probably why something great rubbed off on Carreras from Di Stefano !!! :) Both tenors could make me cry.

  • Good performance but after hearing Domingo's version from 1978 or Björling's from the fifties for me it takes more than this to burst into tears.

    Nevertheless, thanks for uploading

  • He sings that last Bb in pianissimo...how beautiful. It sounds much better with the piano, than forte. Bravo!

  • hmm, is he just doing it piano because he can´t hit the Bb with his "real" voice and only with the "falsett" voice? but it is an interesting interpretation...

  • It is just his interpretation. He usually sang the Bb in piano throughout his career. Jon Vickers also sang the Bb in piano and he had very little trouble with the Bb. I have this on dvd, Carreras actually hits a high C at the end of act 2.

  • ok, well sometimes you don´t know. thanks for the information!

  • I don't think so. Take a look to the score.

That phrase is marked as 'pp' Pianissimo. Some people ignore and sing forte because it's impossible to sing pianissimo with full voice.

  • asd;lfkja;lsdkjflkj

  • He's as usual very good voice! This aria is equivalent to those really expensive and rare paintings in a museum, if there is a museum for aria this should be one of them.

  • Great comment, mondayblues!

  • Genius

  • si j'etai carmen e me jetterai en personne !!!

  • Nice. Although I think Carreras looks a little too nice to play the mad violent Don Jose later in the opera :D

  • indeed ... I like the singing, but I think he needs to look a bit more "disturbed" at this point

  • no i wouldn't want to sleep, actually lol ;)

  • This production of Carmen is my favorite. The entire cast is awesome. Carreras sounds glorious!

  • LOL - you would want to sleep? ;-)

  • lol about Phaedrax's comment...

  • ooo jose please marry mee and sing me this to sleep!!!!

  • Amazing! Incredible! Beautiful! Man, Baltsa sure had a nice rack! Oh, and Jose was good, too.

  • Oh heavens, this is gorgeous! If a man as handsome as Jose Carreras sang a song like this to me, I'd melt into a little pudddle of butter. How Agnes Baltsa maintains her composure as the very cool Carmen, I'll never know! The part where Carreras gets down on his knees and takes her hand at the end just kills me...very romantic! I've heard a recording of Carreras & Baltsa in "Carmen" but this is the first time I've seen a clip from it. Thank you!

  • I love how he did the run at the end

  • Que pena es la ignorancia. Carreras, pura técnica. Unico.

  • The best! Thanks Carreras, for this we love you....

  • Carreras is ususaly not one of my favorite tenor, but i have to say his singing is so passionate and convincing (although he could not convince Carmen:( and his articulation is great.for a non-french speaker he did good and i finally could actually understand all the words he sang. un seul desir!un seul espoir!te revoir Carmen, oui,te revoir. Bravo!

  • Finally, someone who is actually looking at the score.

Stylistically, still not correct and his vowels are too open (as are other admirer's of Giuseppe Di Stefano e.g. Maestro Pavarotti - God rest his soul).

  • Bravo Maestro!!!

  • Marvelous! He's one of the most sensitive singers ever, but his approach is very masculine. I only heard one or two little moments where he went a little bit sharp, but simply gorgeous!

  • From the artistic point of view, well I think that the scene does not need any comment: it comments on its own. Marvellous, absolutely.

As regard Carreras...yeah if only he sang to me like that I'd probably fall down...hoping he takes me in his arms :p

A very charming man with ad inclredible voice: I love him/it.

  • Brilliant.

But I think the best version of his is the one conducted by Karajan. -- the famous soft-dealing of the "je t'aime"...

  • Oh my god, the soft singing is UTTERLY AMAZING....he is truly magnificent....

  • perhaps it could be Alagna's diction is better...gee...I wonder why???? AH! I got it! Could it be because he's FRENCH???!! Fine. But he can't top Carreras's vocal beauty or power!

  • can't even get close!
