this along with countless other performances in 1998 and 99 show mariah still had her voice after 97. What changed was we got more of her husky rasspy alto and her belts became raspy but still powerful. Now charmbracelet forward was when her voice became thin and showed some damage.
Whitney's just high and hatin' 'cause her set was 45% live while Mariah's 100% live. On top of that she hit every note perfectly and then some. That's how a real diva does it.
Also, if you watch the interview you should notice how Oprah implies that whitney has a drug habit already then - talking about sniffing and cleaning.

I love both Whitney and Mariah. When Mariah came out 5 years after Whitney hit the scene, I was in no way ready to just drop Whitney. I too went through the phase of comparing their voices but they both could sing in 1998. I more than just believe, but in this same year, it was becoming apparent that something was happening to Whitney's voice. The drug thing was still a light rumor compared to 2000 and beyond. I still love them both, but Mariah has the least wear and tear right now.

They both have very different voices. I really like them both but Whitney's voice is too deep and it sounds like she is always belting and just trying to be loud. Mariah's voice is beautiful and unique, plus Mariah writes all her songs which already gets her more brownie points than Whit.

Sorry, whitney does not have whistle register. Having the whistle register; as folks have starting to call it, is having the ability to hit High-Notes. I have never heard Whitney hit such notes albeit she is a good singer!
hitting high notes doesn't mean she has the whistle register!!!!! and there are certain high notes the whistle register is the highest and usually occupied with people with light voices. Although mariah has a strong operatic voice it was never as strong as whitneys with her strong tone that sound perfect and operatic.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion. It's not worth arguing over. I don't really like the term "whistle register" to begin with. I have been hearing that term alot lately. I know about ligh voices, the late Minnie Riperton had a light voice, but was amazing at high-notes. I believe she hit those notes higher than Mariah does today. Mariah has credited Minnie as an inspiration.
One gets the sense that Mariah was singing for her life considering her greatest contemporary was watching and listening to her every note. I would be too. She did great though.

mariahs voice is like nasal silk. she has so much depth and texture, espically in the late 90's. i cant describe it. she did something on the daydream and butterfly albums vocally that was just amazing and orginal.

I love both Whitney and Mariah. When Mariah came out 5 years after Whitney hit the scene, I was in no way ready to just drop Whitney. I too went through the phase of comparing their voices but they both could sing in 1998. I more than just believe, but in this same year, it was becoming apparent that something was happening to Whitney's voice. The drug thing was still a light rumor compared to 2000 and beyond. I still love them both, but Mariah has the least wear and tear right now.

They both have very different voices. I really like them both but Whitney's voice is too deep and it sounds like she is always belting and just trying to be loud. Mariah's voice is beautiful and unique, plus Mariah writes all her songs which already gets her more brownie points than Whit.
I really do like Whitney but you just can't compare her to Mariah, especially not anymore.

@tomwigglesworth Mariah, was just a lyricist...the majority of her compositions she had more music savvy people who co-wrote with her, Whitney was better at interpreting a sing, but I think each of them individual set the curve for female vocalist and still until this day are the two female artist that have had the most commercial success, although when it comes down to it, people show more respect to Whitney because she's got more soul and was the 1st 2B commercially successful.

Sorry, whitney does not have whistle register. Having the whistle register; as folks have starting to call it, is having the ability to hit High-Notes. I have never heard Whitney hit such notes albeit she is a good singer!

hitting high notes doesn't mean she has the whistle register!!!!! and there are certain high notes the whistle register is the highest and usually occupied with people with light voices. Although mariah has a strong operatic voice it was never as strong as whitneys with her strong tone that sound perfect and operatic.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. It's not worth arguing over. I don't really like the term "whistle register" to begin with. I have been hearing that term alot lately. I know about ligh voices, the late Minnie Riperton had a light voice, but was amazing at high-notes. I believe she hit those notes higher than Mariah does today. Mariah has credited Minnie as an inspiration.
