  • go two rock go matchness

  • He looks like a much smoother version of ray liota in this performance.

  • John Mayer has the same amount of talent with a guitar that Tim Minchin does with a Piano

  • John performed this in 2007, I'm surely going to be looking back at this 40+ years from now and think.. yeah, this guy is one of the great artists of my generation

  • F'n deadly.

  • Comment removed

  • 2:20 is a sound his "big dipper" pickups makes sometimes. his solo in JM and pete murray at the aria's '06 makes that noise in there too

  • @Jst0911 That guitar doesn't have big dipper pickups.

  • @Muso992 really? i thought the relic'd one did

  • @Jst0911 Nope, they were custom wound by the guy who built the guitar in the fender custom shop. Do a bit of poking around on google and you can probably find some more info.

  • @Jst0911 yes they are big dipper pick ups. Hes used big dippers on all his custom strats

  • @claycook13 you are talkin shit mayne

  • what effects at 2:20 ? sounds sweet doesnt it

  • @antony5linteau i think it's just the way he's playing it cause he's so good

  • @antony5linteau

He uses the guitar/amp dynamics a lot with his attack using both fingers and a pick. But as you can see around 2.20 he allso uses the volume on the guitar. COuld be one of the Two-Rocks has more drive and the other is set to clean channel. That would allow him to get more drive and still have the smooth clean tone still... Mate of mine has a Two-Rock stack pretty much identical to Mayers, and i can honestly say, it doesnt make you sound like mayer :). Its in the fingers...Mostly

  • @antony5linteau Sounds to me like he's got a slight 'uni-vibe' type sound going on which with the added distortion and the way he stacks the notes in that phrase gives the swirly type sound

  • @antony5linteau He plays with some tremolo and reverb and a bit of delay.

  • is he doing play back again?? :(

  • @liniaudiophile Yes!!!!

  • he's so good ck out MARIAH SCIMONE singing this song

  • love the unresolved ending! haha clever stuff.

  • 17 people are just plain dumb! He is insane w/ that guitar and is an unbelievable artist. Love it! Will always love John!

  • My favorite!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Nice song, this is the kind of music I like ... Make me happy and relax .. And Mayer is a great musician . .

  • @yenalud: Yeah, cause it's blues. He takes different approaches to every song he plays because he is a musician. Soloing is not about showing off what you've done before, it's about improvising on the spot and showing that off.

  • @MissChiefism Now that's just smelly...

  • every time i've seen him play this song, he takes a different approach to the solo

  • I FUCKN LOVE HIS VOICEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE HE MELTS MEE!!!! GRACITY BEST SONG EVER!!!!

  • Black Soul

  • drummer looks like jamie foxx

  • He´s hot!!!!

  • Outstanding!! Thanks

    Grandma mary

  • Just keep me "Where the light is". John's live album name.

  • Fuck he knows how to play. Shame he's a crazy mofo

  • there's not a blowjob in the world that could feel better than this

  • @tejjj3 God your comment made me laugh. . . .you couldnt have said it any better. . . .lol. . . .

  • @tejjj3 Well, it looks like John feels the same.

  • @tejjj3 heather brooke ...ba dumm tssss

  • @FoxLich lol u sure mate?

  • @tejjj3 go to xvideos and search her LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

  • Great hair, great voice, for jeezussake dont upset a puffin!

  • You fucking do it and then well talk otherwise shut your trap.

  • there seems to be a bit of tension on the stage in this one. idk what it is exactly but you can hear the awkwardness a little bit and the black dude on guitar looks like he doesn't even want to be there. lol dude, you're playing for John FUCKING Mayer, be humble as can be! haha

  • @conformistlovesheep dude, that black dude on guitar is David Ryan Harris. Don't diss haha. He's a very talented guitarist in his own right, and an incredible vocalist who contributes a huge amount to Mayer's sound. That's just how he chills haha.

  • What pickups are in the guitar?

  • @Disciple1818 Big Dippers

  • @Disciple1818 Fender released signature with "Big Dipper" pickups. Only available with the guitar, never in retail and that's why they cost a lotta cash on ebay. But what's really in HIS guitar? Only JM, John Cruz, Rene Martinez and God know it.

  • @Disciple1818 yeah but they don't sound like that by themselg he's using a marshall bluesbreaker here.

  • @dnnysrock icic, sweet

  • @Disciple1818 what's icic?

  • @dnnysrock It means " I see, isee" as in, I understand

  • @Disciple1818 i have to study interent slang then. mayer ftw

  • nice drum !!!

  • pretty much luv errthang about him

  • his solos are so soulfull..damn!

  • Letterman and his glasses portage on the key boards there get on my fuckin nerves, specially the fuck head that leads the band....man that guy is a knob..he thinks he is all that and aint..i remember him with ed Vanhalen on this show..man that guy got buried..lmao..big know it all..that didn't know..i was like bout time he got put in his place..i noticed he didn't try a thing with john..lmao..as john would have buried him to..there got that off my chest..lmao..weeeeeeee

  • SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I fucking loved this!!!! But is it just me or doesn't anyone else feel like they got left hanging cause he doesn't go back to the ONE at the end? hahaha. either way, loved this. and love you, john.

  • whoever does the mixing for all the talk shows almost always messes things up. i can barely hear the organ, bass, backup guitars. it sounds really empty.

hell of a song though. and mayers's solos are so consistently great.

  • @jsnell126 What are you talking about? I can hear them all just fine

  • Macintosh is standing cool

  • Quite arguably one of his BEST BEST BEST live performances EVER. Seamless, true-ish to the recording...if not better. Simply stunning!! The whole band...his best ever line up imho...

  • SOOOOOOOOOOO GRRRRRREATTTT!!!!!!!!This boy can really play!!

  • I don't get how people think they have the right to call him a douchebag.

I guess, you either misunderstands his sarcastic and ironic sense of humour, or that he said something stupid about something? He is famous, that doesen't make him flawless. We have no idea of how he really is. You all should know how the media and everything takes things out of context and so on, so i think you should know better than sayin stuff like that without really knowing.

  • he wasnt done..haha. everyone started clapping before the last chord..

  • Love the guitar in the song, in fact I like Mayer's guitar playing general, but I don't like his singing lol.

  • @polkmammoth you might not like his voice but calling him a "decent guitar player" is just crazy. dude is the best of our generation. you obviously dont play.

  • John Mayer is an amazing musician but he's a total d-bag as a person.

  • @jthrunz actually hes a cool guy,he just acts like a cocky ass. Hes actually a pretty insightful funny guy,but hes a bit of a player.but hey hes john fucking mayer, name one straight chick that wouldnt kill someone to bang his brains out.

  • God! why do people get so offended when there opinion aren't the same as everyone's!

  • nice...

  • Decent guitar player, TERRIBLE VOICE!! His writing ability lately is more blues geared which is awesome but I can't listen to his voice. It's like a consent whine.

  • @polkmammoth I disagree on the voice part. Its a matter of taste I guess.

  • @polkmammoth lol @ terrible voice - tell me your expertise in this subject so i can understand why you would make this claim about a grammy winning artist

  • @dkrasney Dude let him have his own opinion. I like John Mayer, but I can understand this guys opinion. Dont take it so personally man, your gettin all defensive

  • @polkmammoth So you don't like his voice. Life goes on.

  • very soulful artist

  • Absolutely love this song. The long version would be great but this is smoking for a talk show appearance. He does make that guitar just cry, outrageous.

  • This is a 10-minute song. I hate hearing it when the band don't get given the proper time to let the song grow and build up. As amazing as this sounds, it's just not the 'where the light is' justification of the song Gravity. If only letterman could give John a 10 minute slot haha!

  • I love that solo tone man its like a guitar and pounds of butter made a baby and the sound came out through a speaker

  • Mayer can make a guitar talk. The boy is cold-blooded.

  • Love his guitar playing and his voice is ooooo soooo sexy

  • 3:27

He knows the perfect times to just throw that in

  • John looks so much better with short hair... I love this song and like his guitar =0)

  • I don't get why people feel the need to argue about the most worthless shit on here. Quit bitching and enjoy the music!

  • Does he still play his SRV strat that he bought when he was a kid??

  • i dont think so...hes so into his guitar tone that he wouldnt play a replica guitar like that.

  • actually you are wrong, he still plays his replica, srv, and jimi hendrix montery strat., he chords with his own guitar but plays live with what ever he is feeling

  • he does actually lol

  • @sgreeezy i think he plays it on tour but only when covering SVR tracks. and i think what james6651 ment was that JM has such a unique sound so he dosent want to copy a sound

  • I would just like to say this: I've been surfing through some Mayer videos, and I have yet to find one where people aren't arguing over something stupid. Obviously, since all of you are watching a Mayer video, I hope you all are Mayer fans. So that's one thing we have in common. So shut the hell up and listen to his music for God's sake!

  • @bpcarlson01 amen

  • I'm not embarrassed about anything and I could give a fuck less what your opinion is of me. My response to your comment is what it is, and I don't need to justify anything to you. But everything I put my time into I take seriously including putting fuck heads like you in your place. John is a professional musician and has a great time doing what he loves. I can proudly say the same for myself. My life is far from rough. So uh....die in a fire. "Bitch"

  • @danieldew Yeah i'm with daniel. Sorry the die in a fire bit's a bit strong for me. What instrument you play daniel?

  • @caz743: yeah i was just kidding about the die in a fire thing...but I play guitar and sing. I write music on occasion too. I'm still learning alot, but some day soon everything will come together I hope. You play anything?

  • @bigbabyanitaman: you are a fucking ignorant piece of mold growing on a piece of shit. His facial expressions are just that: expressions. And if that doesn't make any sense I'm sorry I can't talk street to you...my bad.

  • Maybe it's cause he's playing from the heart. Something Hip Hop " artists " know nothing about. To them it's all about how many gold teeth and Escalades you have.

And oh yeah, how many times you can say " bitch "

  • As much as i don't care for John Mayer, he is an exceptional guitarist, and definitely has a life. I don't know if you noticed, but he's a professional musician. Pretty sure his life is set.

  • Damn...

  • Checked it on a page providing all his gear as well. He started out playing the Stevie Ray Vaughan Signature Strat. ... now he has his own, too, but not that one. Check out "Texas Flood" live, it's the same design.

  • Comment removed

  • what? it's his own relic strat.

  • It's the same design, though. I mean the coloring.

  • I think this is the best JM song ever. I am in love the honesty in his music. You can hear the emotions he is experiencing through the song.

  • If you ever watch live from Abbey Road, I think he plays this song and talks specifically about that "unresolved motif" you mentioned and yes he's doing those things on purpose.

  • He doesn't resolve it to the tonic at the end. That's odd. You can hear that tri-tone in the last chord wanting to resolve very badly.

  • Somebody just started their second year of music theory at college...

It's actually just a C6 chord...He's maintaining the song's "tension" by leaving that motif unfinished...

    I think Johnny knows exactly what he's doing...(Besides, it's rock'n'roll...Don't overthink it!)

  • @FunkCowboy i like how all of his music makes sense. you know? like his solos and all. It's just hard to make'em make sense but he does. lol

  • @FunkCowboy Correction - it's blues; you shouldn't "think it" at all, it comes from the gut! :)

  • @FunkCowboy

I really don't think he has a good of a grasp on theory as we'd like to think, this guy just has it figured out in his own way up in his mind. who knows...

  • @jessesnowden Well...respectfully, I disagree. Check out JM's musical resume. Aside from attending Berkley for a year, he's played with some REALLY HEAVY players. (You don't get to jam with Schofield, Herbie Hancock unless you know something about musical theory.) Many people want to believe that it's all instinct and talent but, there's been A LOT of work done there...

Trust me...He's done his homework and he got an "A".

  • resolving tonics is overrated. :D

    I think it sounds cool.

  • @AccountName444 i must agree.... you would like the way chris thile of the punch brothers plays the mandolin nowadays if you haven't listened to the band yet.... you cant feel the tonic like you can feel 6 and maj7

  • I'm not a big John Mayer fan, but I love that song. He is a awesome guitar player.

  • Very underrated. Really good person.

  • Ahhh.. He's switching between pick and fingerstyle in the solos... and there was me trying to strum the verse rythm with my bare fingers ..haha.. im very slow..lol

  • dang i wish i could get a look at his pedal board. daaaaang.

  • he gets most of his tone through his two rock amp heads and 2 two rock 2 x 12 cabinets

  • Love U John M. UR so talented and your songs deep & meaningful! Keep it up-your fans luv U!

  • que maestria xD

  • 2:20-2:35 he had what we guitar players call a guitargasim (these most commonly occur in solos)

  • I never realy heard of John Mayer till the MJ memorial service. I have to say im kinda hooked.ganna go out and get some concerts of him.love gravity.make me wish I could sing.

  • You never heard of John Mayer ?

  • I never hard of Michael Jackson until John Mayer played at his memorial service.

  • wow! where have you been...

  • u never heard of michael jackson!!!!! ("o"), wat r u smokin????

  • LOLS

  • he has the same voice as SRV. not 100% same but a little

  • more like the ballady SRV (life without you) but not like the real bluesy, gritty, srv imo

  • not even close

  • SO DAMN GOOOD!

    Excellent guitar work

  • Underrated guitarist. Gets a bad rep because of all the screaming girls in the audience.

  • People can are fine if they say they don't like his music, but to say he sucks and he can't play guitar is blasphemy.

He's an amazing writer, and guitarist.

  • I remember trying to be really hardcore and dream about filling stadiums with my band while people going crazy, now I'm 33 and I really appreciate all the blues and jazz that I learned from my friends, Look at this guy he's an awesome guitar player and what if he plays pop? ,every gig is packed with beautiful ladies, is better than the sweaty guys doing moshpit in my teenager dreams, go Mayer! Good Job.

  • All I know is...if there's anyone out there that says Mayer isn't one of the best guitarists of our time...they have NO idea how to play or and ANY idea what talent is. There is soooo much SRV in his playing it's sick. And there's no arguement that Stevie Ray was one of the best of all time.

  • i actually listened to mayer a little bit before continuum, especially the "Room for squares" album, and i thought "Man, this guy is good.." . when i first heard continuum and his interpretation(?) of hendrix's "Bold as love" and "Vultures" for example i was like "Man, this guy IS good!" if you know what i'm saying.. :P

  • Comment removed

  • Your comment is ownage. Made me laugh, you showed that guy! Mayer rocks.

  • if you were better than him everyone would know your name...

  • Whats funny about that statement is he used pop songs to get famous and get everyone on his bandwagon. Now he does an album like Continuum where its nothing but blues rhythms and guitar licks. Trust me there are much more better blues players then John Mayer under the radar. All his fame is from his pop songs :\

  • i dont see you getting famous anytime soon, only dissing guitar players that r better than u on youtube

  • Where in any of my sentence did I dis a guitar player? I suggest you go to college and take English 1301 and work on your grammar and comprehension skills because you sir are a retard. PEACE

  • lol, merkage... not :P

  • *All his fame from his fans are from pop songs, not his ability to play the blues if that makes any sense. He is a great guitarist though, just I don't know about the best.

  • @luscy123 He didn't pop tunes to get famous though. He likes writing pop songs so that shouldnt be a bad thing. But his love lies in the blues. Not to mention all of his pop tunes musically are hardly pop. If you read the music or even the tabs you'll see that a lot of his pop songs are based in jazz; there are a lot of other influences also but they definitely are the run of the mill pop songs. I'm just saying don't discredit him cause he does pop; cause in the end his pop owns others by a mile

  • @surfer1211 Yea this song's hook/ intro is a B.B. King lick.

  • @hailmary7283 really? wow...

  • @surfer1211 Exactly. Gravity is basically a blues song. Waiting on the world to change? A gospel chord progression all the way. And his early pop stuff is def. based on jazz. Pretty cool stuff

  • dude i was looking for your vids...

    didnt find any ?

I want to check out your sweet blues skills

  • You know the reason he is famous if for his pop stuff and if you are as good as you say you are with blues, that's why you're not. See he figured this out before his Trio stuff. He played pop stuff that he liked to get his name out and then did what he liked. And his fans accept that. And I'm pretty sure that he knows something about the blues.

  • your just jealous he is better looking, better guitarist, and ladies man that you will ever be.

  • 3:30 solo

  • He is conceited...but I can see why! He is an awesome musician

  • i bet you say that because you know for a fact he likes hendrix

  • say what you will about this cheeseball but the guy can really write a song.

  • a lot of cats can play the blues and the guitar as well as he does and way better but John Mayer has a really tasty quality - in this phrasing and his sound. And he's definitely an extremely gifted song writer... I wish all mainstream artists had such talent!
