@Jst0911 Nope, they were custom wound by the guy who built the guitar in the fender custom shop. Do a bit of poking around on google and you can probably find some more info.
He uses the guitar/amp dynamics a lot with his attack using both fingers and a pick. But as you can see around 2.20 he allso uses the volume on the guitar. COuld be one of the Two-Rocks has more drive and the other is set to clean channel. That would allow him to get more drive and still have the smooth clean tone still... Mate of mine has a Two-Rock stack pretty much identical to Mayers, and i can honestly say, it doesnt make you sound like mayer :). Its in the fingers...Mostly

(You don't get to jam with Schofield, Herbie Hancock unless you know something about musical theory.) All I know is...if there's anyone out there that says Mayer isn't one of the best guitarists of our time...they have NO idea how to play or and ANY idea what talent is. There is soooo much SRV in his playing it's sick. And there's no arguement that Stevie Ray was one of the best of all time.
i actually listened to mayer a little bit before continuum, especially the "Room for squares" album, and i thought "Man, this guy is good.." . when i first heard continuum and his interpretation(?) of hendrix's "Bold as love" and "Vultures" for example i was like "Man, this guy IS good!" if you know what i'm saying.. :P

@luscy123 He didn't pop tunes to get famous though. He likes writing pop songs so that shouldnt be a bad thing. But his love lies in the blues. Not to mention all of his pop tunes musically are hardly pop. If you read the music or even the tabs you'll see that a lot of his pop songs are based in jazz; there are a lot of other influences also but they definitely are the run of the mill pop songs. I'm just saying don't discredit him cause he does pop; cause in the end his pop owns others by a mile

You know the reason he is famous if for his pop stuff and if you are as good as you say you are with blues, that's why you're not. See he figured this out before his Trio stuff. He played pop stuff that he liked to get his name out and then did what he liked. And his fans accept that. And I'm pretty sure that he knows something about the blues.
a lot of cats can play the blues and the guitar as well as he does and way better but John Mayer has a really tasty quality - in this phrasing and his sound. And he's definitely an extremely gifted song writer... I wish all mainstream artists had such talent!

As much as i don't care for John Mayer, he is an exceptional guitarist, and definitely has a life. I don't know if you noticed, but he's a professional musician. Pretty sure his life is set.

Checked it on a page providing all his gear as well. He started out playing the Stevie Ray Vaughan Signature Strat. ... now he has his own, too, but not that one. Check out "Texas Flood" live, it's the same design.

If you ever watch live from Abbey Road, I think he plays this song and talks specifically about that "unresolved motif" you mentioned and yes he's doing those things on purpose.

He doesn't resolve it to the tonic at the end. That's odd. You can hear that tri-tone in the last chord wanting to resolve very badly.

Somebody just started their second year of music theory at college...
It's actually just a C6 chord...He's maintaining the song's "tension" by leaving that motif unfinished...
I think Johnny knows exactly what he's doing...(Besides, it's rock'n'roll...Don't overthink it!)

@jessesnowden Well...respectfully, I disagree. Check out JM's musical resume. Aside from attending Berkley for a year, he's played with some REALLY HEAVY players. (You don't get to jam with Schofield, Herbie Hancock unless you know something about musical theory.) Many people want to believe that it's all instinct and talent but, there's been A LOT of work done there...
Trust me...He's done his homework and he got an "A".

I remember trying to be really hardcore and dream about filling stadiums with my band while people going crazy, now I'm 33 and I really appreciate all the blues and jazz that I learned from my friends, Look at this guy he's an awesome guitar player and what if he plays pop? ,every gig is packed with beautiful ladies, is better than the sweaty guys doing moshpit in my teenager dreams, go Mayer! All I know is...if there's anyone out there that says Mayer isn't one of the best guitarists of our time...they have NO idea how to play or and ANY idea what talent is. There is soooo much SRV in his playing it's sick. And there's no arguement that Stevie Ray was one of the best of all time.

i actually listened to mayer a little bit before continuum, especially the "Room for squares" album, and i thought "Man, this guy is good.." . when i first heard continuum and his interpretation(?) of hendrix's "Bold as love" and "Vultures" for example i was like "Man, this guy IS good!" if you know what i'm saying.. :P

Whats funny about that statement is he used pop songs to get famous and get everyone on his bandwagon. Now he does an album like Continuum where its nothing but blues rhythms and guitar licks. Trust me there are much more better blues players then John Mayer under the radar. All his fame is from his pop songs :\

@luscy123 He didn't pop tunes to get famous though. He likes writing pop songs so that shouldnt be a bad thing. But his love lies in the blues. Not to mention all of his pop tunes musically are hardly pop. If you read the music or even the tabs you'll see that a lot of his pop songs are based in jazz; there are a lot of other influences also but they definitely are the run of the mill pop songs. I'm just saying don't discredit him cause he does pop; cause in the end his pop owns others by a mile

You know the reason he is famous if for his pop stuff and if you are as good as you say you are with blues, that's why you're not. See he figured this out before his Trio stuff. He played pop stuff that he liked to get his name out and then did what he liked. And his fans accept that. And I'm pretty sure that he knows something about the blues.

a lot of cats can play the blues and the guitar as well as he does and way better but John Mayer has a really tasty quality - in this phrasing and his sound. And he's definitely an extremely gifted song writer... I wish all mainstream artists had such talent!
