  • @luvintherawlife Hi Lynn. 8 hours is fine for every see, nut, bean, etc though for some you can get away with as little as 2-4. That being said, it doesn't matter as soaking 8 hours will not harm these ones at all. The bean (etc) can only take in a finite amount of water and what it can't, it won't. Good luck!

  • I found your flax seed cracker recipe and I am trying it right now. Can't wait. I also watched your sprouting video and it inspires me to try to get more regular about sprouting.

    Thanks

  • Thank you so much Karen for posting the video! :)

  • After the seeds have been soaked overnight, does it matter if the jar sits in sunlight or in the dark?

  • @bluesdog88 It's better for them to be in the light as that what makes the sprout reach "out" towards the sun, so to speak.

  • @karenknowler OK Thank you, appreciated ;)

  • Also, do you have a video re: turning sprouted seeds like sunflower, etc., into dehydrator treats. "Better Than Roasted" makes sprouted spicy sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and mixes. Now that I've invested in an Excalibur, I can probably save a lot of money by doing it myself. Just not sure about adding spices, etc

Look forward to making your flaxseed crackers next. Have made a version of them already, which I loved, but next time to market must get peppers...... Many thanks, again.

  • @bbmaven No I don't have a video for that, but it is pretty simple to do. Maybe one day!

  • @karenknowler Yes, I think I have a general idea of how to go about it now. :-)

  • Karen, thanks so much for all the videos. You've inspired me to go deeper (I made your almond milk, a breakthrough! Visited your website, too.)

Now onto sprouting. My question: is this the method for basically sprouting everything? Seeds, beans, nuts, etc. Can use this method to sprout pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, broccoli seeds, etc., as well as Quinoa, millet, & beans except kidney?

(one of two posts, not enough room).

  • @bbmaven Yes this is the basic method for sprouting anything : )

  • @karenknowler Been learning in leaps and bounds since posting this. :-) Sprouted quinoa already a favorite .... and the chickpeas are beautiful done this way. Thanks for pointing in the right direction. It's all so much easier than one imagines.

  • @karenknowler Can you tell me if sprouting Oats is worth trying? Ive been just soaking whole oats and eating them as a sort of raw oatmeal and I love it but what about the sprouting?

  • @FletcherHabit 99.9% of the oats you will buy commercially have been steamed at the very least, rendering them unable to sprout. Soaking them is still great though. You would have to buy or obtain truly raw oats to get them to sprout.

  • Any kind of bean? and where would I buy them, just dry beans at my grocery store?

  • @Irisheyes77christy Any bean except Kidney Bean, which are toxic unless cooked. Yes a grocery store would work, but for better quality beans best to get them from a health food store.

  • Have you tried quinoa? How do they stack up nutritionally to other options like mung beans, chickpeas, etc?

  • @auggiedoggy Yes quinoa is great and is ready in less than a day. I don't know the nutritional profiles, but fitday dot com could help you out there.

  • great video...straight to the point...!!!Great job!!!!Thank you for sharing!!!!!

  • i bet if you did this with cannabis/hemp seeds youd be sorted. theres alot of protein in that stuff.. im gonna try this soon with some seeds.

  • @AbattoirDream Except it's illegal!

  • @karenknowler OHH NOOO!?!?! ITS NOT IS IT...:O:O:O lol

    so what...? haha

  • @AbattoirDream So at least I've told you : )

  • you can also make a sprouting lid by cutting window screening in a circle and put it under the jar ring.

  • Great Video!!! I'm just starting, but I have sprouted lentils, chick peas, and pintos, but mostly lentils. A few days ago I found a health food store that carries a huge variety of sprouting seeds so I got a few of the more common ones... fenugreek, radish, broccoli, red clover, and alfalfa. The broccoli is sprouting at a much much slower rate than the others, is this normal? My home usually stays at about 65 F.

  • @bamashay Yes, that's normal.

  • Thank you so much! I'm 48 years old, and from ~41 started having hereditary allergic problem with legumes (no, although I live in LA, USA, I am not being superficial when talking about food allergy.) Recently, a friend recommended bean sprouts, because the sprouting process changes the enzymes in the legume to more agreeable to me. I'm going to try it! Great video!

  • Thanks so much, I'm soo happy for you!

  • Very informative video, thanks!

  • Hi Karen. Is it the exact same process for sprouting Flax seeds? Also, have you ever sprouted 2 types in the same jar? Like Chick Pea in same container as Flax?

    Ty. Love these vids

  • You can yes, but I don't sprout flax - too gelatenous for me! Chick pea and flax wouldn't be a good combination at all... you want things like mung and lentil or mung and adzuki. Similar sized beans that take the same time to sprout and have a complimentary taste.

  • oh ok thanks. What can one do with Flax then? I've heard of grinding them in a coffee grinder or i guess there's the flax oil too. Does one get all the goodness from flax these ways? I read somewhere that sprouting them unlocks more of their goodness that's why i was curious. Love your clips they're so easy to follow and adopt. BB

  • Those are good options. Flax seeds don't really sprout they just go gloopy! Milled flax is fine and so is the oil in small amounts. You can use both in many ways and all good!

  • do they have to be glass jars? can plastic do?

  • Plastic is fine.

  • Thank you for this. The sprouting process had me confused for a while but this video has cleared it right up/

  • Thanks alot for this video!

  • Well explained,thankyou.Adam.

  • I have to say, your channel/videos are by far the best raw videos I've come across. You have such a natural presence on camera, and you are really confident in what you're doing! Please keep them coming!

  • god, I love your accent

  • Where did you get those jars with the mesh in the lid? That's awesome!

  • I got them from The Fresh Nework (UK). Not sure if they still sell them but you can get similar ones from GoodnessDirect dot couk. Some health food shops sell them also. Or you can google "Edward Cairney" who created them. Good luck!

  • Fantastic! I'm grateful for that information! Hope you have a good weekend!

  • update: i got some different wheat and it has sprouted. now just the mould problem when i plant it

  • my wheat didnt sprout.... also when i planted it without sprouting first my soil got mould on it and hardly any of it grew :(

  • As long as the vessel can hold seeds/beans and water and you can cover it somehow (and still allow air in), that's all you need. Bowls, jugs, jars, even saucepans! Anything goes!

  • i want to grow alfalfa sprouts is it the same method. and as for the sprouting jar......im not sure i can spare the money for one but may hev something around the hous ethat would work..... any suggestions

  • which beans can you use for sprouting?

  • Too many to mention here : ) I would recommend you invest in a small low cost book such as The Sprouter's Handbook by Edward Cairney. My personal faves are aduki and mung.

  • Salt water is not good! If you don't over or undersprout the beans then they won't be bitter.

  • Glad to hear of your success! Why are you going to soak them in salt water?!

  • i wanted to soak it in salt water so that the beans are not as bitter. will this take away any of the nutrients or anything?

  • who said salt water makes it less bitter?

  • They won't be bitter if they are sprouted correctly. They are only bitter when you try to eat them too early or too late. Salt water is not healthy at the best of times.

  • this week i tried sprouting for the first time and i was extremely successful! they are growing quickly and taste great! i think when they get a little bit larger i am going to soak them in salt water for a while. great video!!

  • No clue whatsoever! Sorry! But you don't have to sprout flax seeds to get oil - how were you thinking of getting the oil?

  • I was just curious if you knew how much oil may be in sprouted flax seeds. I know it can't be much. Will be sprouting everything anyway..

  • I have done lots of sprouting and loved it! Do you happen to know how much flax seed oil can be attained from sprouting flax seeds?

  • I once had a stron reaction fromeating sunflower sprouts initially.. a kind of profound headrush... cant tell if this is bad or not, was a tiny bit worried, is this noramal..

  • Have never heard of this before so cannot comment I'm afraid. Anyone else?

  • I will try alfafa and see if the same thing happens.. maybe my body is just so devoid of life or nutrients just now that any intake of them gives me a strong sensation.. just a thought.. Just starting off on raw foods at the moment

  • I've read and heard several times that chickpea sprouts need to be blanched to get rid of the toxins. I've also read that it only applies to a certain kind used in eastern countries and that the ones we have in the western world doesn't contain these toxins.

I'd love to hear your take on this.

  • I've heard various things too and I don't know the real answer BUT what I do know is that most foods have some kind of toxin in and each person has to find out which foods work best for them. Personally I am not a huge fan of sprouted chickpeas so I very rarely eat them. Cheers!

  • Hi Karen!

Great videos! I have noticed a lot raw food companies selling food grade hydrogen peroxide for sprouting. Is this to prevent mold (I am treating candida)? Is it necessary, and if so can I use apple cider vinegar instead? How does one use it?

    Thank you

  • Non food grade H2O2 we buy at 3%. It's suggested to take food grade, which I've only seen at ...i think it was 35%. Regardless, food grade is too caustic for handling and application. I found for berries that even 3% was too much and turned ripe berries into ...a lot less ripe, strikingly.

  • Hi Karen, what about beetroot? I find the high iron content gives me an energy boost after a hard day.

  • Thanks you. This is very helpful because I tried to sprout wild rice and black beans and didn't know what I was doing. 5 stars!

  • These jars look? better than the ones I am using, where did you source them please x

  • Fresh Network : ) But you can get in some health food stores in UK... They're great!

  • Smiling as I connect with you, cool clip. thankyou x

  • Thanks - will check out their site. x

  • Hi Karren

can you mix different types of beans together and sprout them together.

    many many thanks

  • Yes you can! But you need to choose ones that have the same sprouting time.

  • Hi Karren

can you mix lots of different types of beans and sprout them all together.

    many many thanks

  • hi karen, I just started sprouting this week - quinoa, lentils, and buckwheat. Well after 2 days, the lentils and buckwheat look great, but the quinoa, which is about half sprouted, has turned bright pink in many spots. is this normal for quinoa? or is there something funky in there?

  • Glorious gratitude to you Karen!

I am appreciating your thorough + joyful teaching style.

    Thank you for inspiring me!

    blissings,

    d

  • Where can i order sprout seeds?? Best price.

  • thank you for this simple and thorough explanation, i have been looking up sproating for a month now, and no one goes into good visula detail about what to do each day, thanks, do we need the mesh? can we have a cover on it?

    thanks

  • Thanks! You do need something with holes, yes, for ventilation reasons. Otherwise they will sweat and/or mold.

  • Hi Karen, I've dispaired of sprouting because, even when I apparently doing everything right, my sprouts will get fuzz on them(seen only on close inspection) and I think it's basically fungus. I don't want to eat it, though I've unknowingly done so and it tastes alright. I've noticed that certain seeds seem more prone to getting the fuzz. If you have any advice, thank you! vartak777

  • Can you tell me which sprouts in particular? They may just be little hairs rather than mold!

  • Hey Karen, Where do you get the mesh jar lids? I keep a lot of my foods in mason jars but did not see those lids. There a great idea,

  • Hi, I got mine from The Fresh Network but you can get from some health food shops. Where do you live?

  • I live in the USA, Tampa, Florida. I do go to my health store quite a bit though it didn't dawn on me to look there. lol. I will check next time I go. I love your videos by the way. You explain things so well.

  • for sprout salad do you reccomend sprouting in dirt or in a jar?

  • Jar : )

  • thanks for your responses. one last question,

i want to start sprouting pea greens.

can you tell me what to ask for. would it be expensive to buy like a 25pd bag, and should i ask for snow peas in particular?

  • when there'ye just sitting there for three days should i put a towel over it so that it's in darkness?

  • No - just exactly as I describe. Leave them as is.

  • thanks this has been very helpful

  • Wow! Awesome! I think i am going to buy some sprouting jar!

  • Thanks Karen for the info. I just bought sprouting jars a few days ago. The info was helpful.
