But why wouldn't it work in Europe? All you need is a TV, an OnLive MicroConsole, a couple of cables and an OnLive account. I can play OnLive on my PC already in Europe, so does that mean when i buy the OnLive gaming system will it also work on my TV in Europe?
Is this just a slick way to make people actually pay for online gaming when Windows Live Games are free to play? I bought NBA 2k11 to play online on my because I didn't want to spend hundreds on a console that seems to have 90 percent of army type games. Shit, even the knew Resident evil is basically a army game. Anyway, 2k has a issue with there online server and I notice on the onlive site they have the game listed to use with this online device. The other interesting thing about this is...
Mine looks really fuzzy... I donno why, graphic wise it makes my PC aactually run games and look half decent. That I'm suprised by... But the fuzzyneess is weird... like theres a grey fog overlaying the gameplay
@leaf16nut because the reso is set to low. I have the same issue. Thats to reduce the latency if your internet speed cant handel it. If you dont live in the USA you will probaly get alot of delay and a fuzzy screen. Just wait for them to set up servers in europe
@leaf16nut yhea, probaly. They are just starting. We need to give them time to set up servers around the world. I live in the Netherlands and in begin 2011 onlive with start running servers in Belgium, the country right below the Netherlands :D!
@pcfitness Say your ping to the server is 30 ms, your in game commands (movements) will happen in the game only within 30 ms and you will see it 60 ms after you issued this command.
Also, because it sends huge amount of data, it will increase the latency even more.
So at the end you get a noticeable delay.
On your computer / console you see your movements immediately, even if there's some delay in online games, your own movements don't lag.
@TraNWhiZ I hear what your saying and it makes perfect sense, but I don't think it's going to be that bad and think the latency, ping, ms will vary per connection.
@pcfitness Yes, it will vary, but the delay will be noticeable no matter how good your connection is, some people will barely notice it.
That's why I think this will not be "mainstream" service, but an alternative for people who can't afford a gaming system but really want to play a specific game, say GTA IV or Mafia 2. People who aren't gamers basically.
More reasons why this won't be mainstream is; FPS won't get above 30 (that would be too much traffic), the quality, must be online, etc
@Davemercd You say that because you are used to the online multiplayer 30 ms latency, if your game movement is delayed by 60 milliseconds you will notice it for sure, and I don't talk about the time it takes for their servers to compress the video stream its showing to you.
You are forgetting that onlive has various algorithms that deal with the latency, effectively "predicting" certain movements of the controller and etc. I've tried the service myself and I have to say I am pleasantly surprised. The latency isn't as big of a deal as people think it is, in fact, its hardly noticeable on Onlive.
@TraNWhiZ Well onlive uses a variety of algorithms that compute your position in 3d space based upon a kind of movement-curve graph that analyzes your movement over an extremely small period of time. Also, I agree that for some, especially those with slower internet connections, it will be awhile before it becomes a mainstream service. However, I think it is awesome to be able to rent a game for a few days or even just try a demo instantly without having to download files or go to blockbuster.

If they can fix the response time and the foggyness it'll suceed, if not it dosnt have a hope on hell.

This will never "kill" consoles.

@TraNWhiZ 30ms is probably better than any console connection.
Davemercd 1 year ago
@Davemercd You talk about internet probably because that's the only thing it triggers when you see 30ms or any number.
30ms (if not more) of a delay between you do an action until it happens in the game, and another 30 ms till you actually see it on the screen.
