i saw him in the 1975 playoffs live, twice and the guy was unstoppable when on. had the3 point rule been around (whether it should or not, another question) his stats would dwarf those of today's players. while not a great jumper we forget that he retired a brilliant INSIDE game in the late 60s to preserve his body. his first step was incredible and his fake jumper is like a change-up no one could defend it.
I think one of least talked about megastars the NBA has ever known an dwould dominate the current NBA. Why are pistol pete, world b free, connie hawkins, rik, gail goodrich, walton, moses malone, darryl dawkins, dave thompson, iceman, not talked about more I will never know.
I am certain Rick take excessive pride in the fact that the last time the Golden State Warriors were any good (or at least relevant), was when he played for them.
I saw Barry back in the day and he could play in any era. He is one of the best deep shooters ever, could pass with any forward ever. They called him the Miami Greyhound for a reason - he was as good a playmaker and finisher on the break as anybody. Barry was a scoring machine and could hurt you from 30 ft or driving by you. If you sent him to the line he was a 90 % free throw shooter. Once I saw him score 55 and he hit the game winner falling out of bounds with a defender all over him. Awesome
led the GSW to one of the biggest upsets in in NBA if not all sports history. The Bullets were supposed to sweep them had the best Regular season record of all teams 2 or 3 all stars on top of that. Plus the big E an MVP candidate
.....someone like david robinson, who was also(when he was in his prime) the second most best center in his era, behind hakeem olajuwon. although just to set the record straight - i have bill russell quite a few places higher than robinson on my all time list because bill was a ferocious competitor and a winner. robinson wasnt either of these things...
Rick Barry's speech during the presentation of the 2011 WCF trophy to the Mavericks had tears streaming down my face (and I think even made Dirk cry) He's always been great behind a mic whether it was a player interview, announcer, or beyond. People get way too stuck up on a couple of gaffs. He's no Isiah Thomas.
en el anime slam dunk en algunas ocasiones un basqetbolista de preparatoria lanzaba sus tiros de la misma forma , Hanamichi Sakuragi, aunque el no tenia idea de este jugador, solamente se le ocurrio..
There's really no way to tell whether players from this generation could compete against each other. It was a different game back than. Jump shooting was much more important back than. It's somewhat of a lost art now. Athleticism has changed the game, but it's different types of athletes now than in the past. My guess is the players from the past would do better than most people would expect if it was possible for them to play. It's definitely a more fair comparison to just judge for won gener
i remember rick barry quite well and as i read all these comments the 1 word comes 2 mind when describing him is controversial as far as the larry bird comparison there may have been alittle difference in their style/game but 1 thing's 4 sure they were very strong-willed, hard-nosed, very passionate, competitive players that played every game like it 4 the championship until the day they retired thats what i loved the most about them both!
Flipper79able, I have NO reason for what Rick said BUT I believe it was just a horrific mistake. I have NEVER heard any of his african-american teammates (and there have been MANY) say anything about Rick being prejudice. They have all said he was a demanding perfectionist BUT NOT racist. I realize I can't sway your mind on this matter but through it all please realize Rick was a great player who was not racist or prejudiced in any way.
Rick was great but sooooo very intense and he showed it ! In MJ's heyday the announcers would say "He's so intense". and I would scream "What about Rick !?" I have never seen anybody as intense as Rick Barry and his desire to win was so strong ...unfortunately he did not expresss it too well, refs, coaches and players didn't like the way he'd scream at refs and teammates and I understand that. If not for his temper he would have been an NBA Coach or Manager for many years now.
Rick was great but I heard him say to Bill Russel that "He had a watermelon smile on his face in a photo". This was during an NBA game in the eighties when they were both commentators and on a break from the game. Russel was visibly unhappy but played it cool. I have to say ever sense I heard that I have thought either Rick is stupid or a bigot. It's not a plus in my book to be either one.
Flipper79able....Rick made a HUGE mistake. I can't take up for him too much BUT he is NOT a racist. I know for a fact that he respects Bill Russell almost more than any other athlete of his day. It was a slip of the lip or a horrible social faux paus. Please don't let this enter into your judgement of the greatest all around forward in NBA history.
@Dwaynne63 I can forgive Rick if I heard him say sorry to Bill I would call it even and not hold a grudge but I don't know if he did that? I just don't understand why someone would say to a black man they had a watermelon smile? I would forgive any celebrity if they said something racist and said sorry if their sincere, but I don't know enough about Rick to know that he is sorry. The little I know about him does not show him in a good light.
billyjo1881, I only got "into" Pistol Pete" about 5 years ago but I have been a fan of Rick's since I was a kid. Nevertheless, I agree with you, I could watch Rick and Pistol's videos all day everyday !
Barry would as be great in today's game as he was in his era. There are things you can't coach into a players game ; Quickness and , Size. He is truly 6,7" Not NBA 6,7' which is 1 -2 " shorter than the listed NBA program. Quick and fast as any player today at that size, and can shoot, pass, and played D too. Ask Dr J or Jabbar or Jerry West or any other Super Star . Barry was the real deal
NO ONE knows more about or has more respect for Rick Barry than me ! He was Larry Bird waaaaaaaaay before there was Larry Bird but never had the supporting cast that Bird had. Nevertheless he won a championship in the ABA and NBA withfair to decent talent around him. He was a GREAT player and the BEST NBA forward I have ever seen.
Dwaynne63....forget titles because those are team achievments. At what aspects skillwise would you place Rick Barry over Bird? He was a little before my time.
Rick was the BEST free throw shooter EVER in the NBA. One player has a teeny bit higher free throw average but shot many, many less free throws. Rick was a great passer and for many years was called "the NBA's best passing forward" by many national TV and radio announcers AND Rick led the NBA in steals ! In his era guards did that. He was NOT a great 1 on 1 defender BUT when it came to team defense he played the passing lanes better than any forward I have ever seen. He was ahead of his time.
I checked that Rick Barry scored his career high of 64 points, he made 30 field goals. An outstanding performance, but only made 4-5 free throws. I checked that he and Wilt Chamberlain are the only NBA players to score 30 or more field goals.
@tom91775 Really? He always talks about his boys like he's close to them. I know nothing about his personal life (and feel voyeuristic and sleezy for asking), but is that a torubled relationship?
@bphatboyjohn123. The question was about 7 feet guys averaging 35 points more a game a season. Only two players over 7 feet have done that in a season.
I saw Jon Barry play when he was attending UOP, before transferring to GT where he was on a FF team. Good shooter, but was on a bad UOP team that was winless in PCAA play his freshman season.
Veo -- Barry left the NBA Warriors for the ABA Oakland Oaks, where he, and later NBA head coaches Point Guard Larry Brown, Forward Doug Moe won an ABA Championship, before he went to the Nets.
Rick Barry and Bernard King were two of the greatest players in NBA History. Both very underrated for their achievments both team and individual. Todays players could not even lace up their sneakers I'm afraid. Now a days their are too many hotdogs that ain't sheet. These guys and the great players of the past were real men.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
rick a good white emotional gunner. he refused go to the virginia squires. didn't want his kids growing up saying hey y'all. so he let them to georgia tech.instead? ...i was a long time getting a pHd in chemistry. i made and shared purple microdot LSD with his sons Drew and Jon. i beat Jon in a game of h-o-r-s-e after we got high on marijuana. i beat the fuck out of kenny anderson for allowing that to happen. i am a black belt.
Man, I grew up with the SF/Golden State Warriors and "Captain Rick" was a great player and team leader. He was also an incredible "prick" according to a few people I have met who know the man.
That being said, we haven't had a championship year since 1975 (2007 was close but no cigar) and damn, I'd like AT LEAST one more.
the all time starting five in nba history is russell at center, petit and pf and rick barry at sf and magic at pg and jordan at sg, wilt and russell were on merv griffin's show and merv asked both to pick the all time starting five, they each picked rick barry as the first pick...and themselves as the center, and petit, magic and jordan rounding it out...RICK BARRY MIGHT HAVE BEEN A NUT, BUT MAMA MIA, THERE'S NEVER BEEN A SF WITH HIS SKILLS, RANGE, STEALS, ASSISTS,
I don't know why in sports do people try to compare eras. I mean in football nobody tries to compare LaDanian Thomlinson to Harold "Red" Grange.
Todays NBA is a very athletic league as with all sports. Athleticism has increased and it's not really fair to compare today's athletic players. I mean Centers and Power Forwards now can be as fast and agile as guards back in Barry's heyday.
@pfax In principle I agree with you. You can measure the greatness of a player only against his peers in the era he or she plays in. But basketball, unlike football, is a game where you clearly see how players and their game have evolved. The ballhandling, dribble moves that not one thought about in those days and which are routinely mastered by today's players. The physique of players, their body control, the shooting motion. You see these guys and you know they would not stand a chance today.
@pfax the best way to compare players from different eras is to work out how dominant a player was in his own era(taking into account how strong each era was in terms of talent depth for their position in particular). bill russell was the second most dominant center in his era behind wilt. the nba has become a lot more athletic since the 50s/60s and if bill played today he wouldnt be better than someone like brendan haywood but he shouldnt be penalised for this. he should be compared to........
@pfax I agree athletes have evolved but there are men like Barry that would rip the NBA up to this day. He was as fast as any of today's players, has all the athletic skills of today's players. plus he was a closer. If Barry team was up he'd close it out. if behind he'd score the last 10 or so to win
There were a lot of reasons Barry was, well, unpopular. The jump from the NBA to the ABA, was probably the biggest reason. He was lambasted for that. He was also a huge egotist, who thought the world of himself. I read his "autobiography" back when he was still playing, and he basically implied he was the only decent player on Earth. But he was a great player. And a great announcer - but he was blackballed from that, too. SI ran article about him about 25 years ago, explaining why.
aba then was more spectacular and faster and more atheltism, nba then wasmore conservative, the only differnece then was the media coverage, aba has little media exposure,if you look at the video of aba, the same as nba todays game, the dunks, assists, showtime,
you're only as good as you can be effecient, in other words how can we say a player is so good and a legend if he is hurt all the time. The only time i see t-mac on the floor is in old highlights.
He's even known to have had a strained relationship with his own kids. I like watching footage of this guy and reading about him.....he's kinda not talked about too much, he hurt public image of himself. He was a rebel and ahead of his time, a top5 small forward imo. He was as good at everything as Bird except on the glass. 90%FT underhanded....wow.
Beat him in what? As good as McGrady is, Barry in his prime was better at everything. Maybe not as athletic, but with his skills in everything else, he didn't need to rely on pure athleticism. Barry is a perfect teammate, who only took high percentage shots and created opportunities for other players. Tmac would not beat him.
Barry was a perfectionist, who thought everyone else needed to play at his level of intensity (or insanity) - however the fact remains, he took an unheralded team of nobodies and willed them to an NBA championship - probably the greatest passing forward of all time - if he had remained with SF instead of jumping to the ABA he probably would have won afew titles - an all time great, undone by being an all time jerk as well - he got what he deserved as far as burning his bridges, just too anal..
Rick is a close friend and also my partner, I did not know him as a player (I am only 33). All I can say is that he's a great friend and one of the most amazing people I met in my life :-)
thanks so much VeoShock... Barry is my altime fav... I lived in the Bay Area in '75 and went to all those games... the warriors were big upset winners as most NBA fans my know... thats why they played at the Cow Palace... the OAC was being used for something else... Barry was a scoring machine and the best player, bar none, in his prime in those ABA/NBA years IMHO... he owned DrJ... they used to say " the Nets didn't play last night, Barry scored 35"
Real shame this guy has been sort of blackballed by the NBA......won his ring the real hard way, almost singlehandedly in 75, just like my other favourite player the Dream.
youtube n copy rights. they made me change it or the vid had to be taken off of youtube. it sucks, but this is youtube music my friend. miss summer breeze myself. :(
I'm 43 and Rick was my god growing up. Great video VeoShock. I'm glad you showed him bitchin at the refs because it's a huge factor in his being underated. He quite frankly on the court was a complete asshole, but he was my asshole! Good discussion about Barry vs. Bird too in comments. Thanks again for the cool video!
I'm sorry, yes Barry was nasty, but my favorite white basketball player, hell, basketball player of all time was my man Pete Maravich. Showtime baby!!
I agree that Larry Bird was a better passer and Rick Barry was a better athlete. But although Larry had a reputation as a great shooter, he didn't shoot that great of a percentage for his career. So I give shooting to Rick. Also, I'd give defense to Larry. He was a great defensive player, because he was extremely smart and anticipated incredibly well.
just wanna add something to the description. he also played for the oakland oaks and the washington caps in the aba before he played for the new york nets. good vid
Assuming you are refering to the first song by Seals and Crofts - Summer Breeze is the name of the song... One of my all time favorites... It's an "oldie" but "goldie" from the 1970's!
Rick Barry was so great that he really brought Larry Bird's style of play to the NBA before Larry Bird. I never remember him missing a free throw. Ever! That underhand free throw shot of his was automatic systematic. I never understood why so many news people disliked Rick Barry. If the media would of liked him he would still be a household name today. For the enlightened fans of basketball, Rick Barry still is a household name. VEOSHOCK, you are the BEST ON YOUTUBE for B-Ball History!
Rick Barry is one of my favorite players of all time. I just got his 66-67 warriors jersey. I'm an oldschool kid. I dont give a crap about kobe or lebron
i can't believe there are rick barry highlights on youtube. i typed in rick barry in the search engine about a year ago, but all it showed was pictures to music, and him doing commentary for cbs. props to Veo shock for uploading. dude shoots lay-ups underhanded too. that shits crazy manne!!!
Most people don't know Rick Barry nick name was The Miami Greyhound. There wasn't anything Rick couldn't do. A great scorer, a great leader, a solid defender, a heck of a free thrower, a player in the clutch, u name it, Rick could do it. One of the best NBA players to ever play the game PERIOD. And all of his kids r GOOD BASKETBALL PLAYERS TO. Just Unbelievable.
Never ever underestimate the old school. I absolutely hate it when people my age and younger declare that players in the past wouldn't be able to thrive today. Total BS. They are legends for a reason, short shorts or not.
rick barry existed long before slam dunk is created. in fact, the said anime even NOTED that sakuragi is trying to immitate that NBA player who could do the same free throw.
Great Rick Barry video. I was lucky to go Game 3 at the Crap Palace when the Warriors won it in 75. The NBA needs to treat Rick with a helluva lot more respect then they do.
Great to see Rick in action again! I was lucky enough to see the 1967 All-Star game at the Cow Palace. Rick was the game MVP with something like 42 points. He and Nate Thurmond won the game for the West and for San Francisco. It was the winter of the Summer of Love. Thanks for a great post!
The most amazing thing is how his hair grew back. Kidding aside, he had a great career in the NBA & ABA. The championship series win which he orchestrated over the heavily favored Bullets was one of the greatest upsets in NBA history. Ill never forget the fight between Warrior coach Attles and Mike Riordan after Riordan fouled Barry hard.
i saw him in the 1975 playoffs live, twice and the guy was unstoppable when on. had the3 point rule been around (whether it should or not, another question) his stats would dwarf those of today's players. while not a great jumper we forget that he retired a brilliant INSIDE game in the late 60s to preserve his body. his first step was incredible and his fake jumper is like a change-up no one could defend it.

Todays players could not even lace up their sneakers I'm afraid. Now a days their are too many hotdogs that ain't sheet. These guys and the great players of the past were real men.

rick a good white emotional gunner. he refused go to the virginia squires. didn't want his kids growing up saying hey y'all. so he let them to georgia tech.instead? ...i was a long time getting a pHd in chemistry. i made and shared purple microdot LSD with his sons Drew and Jon. i beat Jon in a game of h-o-r-s-e after we got high on marijuana. i beat the fuck out of kenny anderson for allowing that to happen. i am a black belt.

Man, I grew up with the SF/Golden State Warriors and "Captain Rick" was a great player and team leader. He was also an incredible "prick" according to a few people I have met who know the man.
That being said, we haven't had a championship year since 1975 (2007 was close but no cigar) and damn, I'd like AT LEAST one more.

the all time starting five in nba history is russell at center, petit and pf and rick barry at sf and magic at pg and jordan at sg, wilt and russell were on merv griffin's show and merv asked both to pick the all time starting five, they each picked rick barry as the first pick...and themselves as the center, and petit, magic and jordan rounding it out...RICK BARRY MIGHT HAVE BEEN A NUT, BUT MAMA MIA, THERE'S NEVER BEEN A SF WITH HIS SKILLS, RANGE, STEALS, ASSISTS,

if they played today they would be a great team
beerrun34 2 years ago
Can we just agree that Rick was a great player.
I don't know why in sports do people try to compare eras. I mean in football nobody tries to compare LaDanian Thomlinson to Harold "Red" Grange.
Todays NBA is a very athletic league as with all sports. Athleticism has increased and it's not really fair to compare today's athletic players. I mean Centers and Power Forwards now can be as fast and agile as guards back in Barry's heyday.
pfax 2 years ago 13
@pfax In principle I agree with you. You can measure the greatness of a player only against his peers in the era he or she plays in. But basketball, unlike football, is a game where you clearly see how players and their game have evolved. The ballhandling, dribble moves that not one thought about in those days and which are routinely mastered by today's players. The physique of players, their body control, the shooting motion. You see these guys and you know they would not stand a chance today.

@pfax I think we can agree rick barry is a mother fukin monster on the court
deliqquent 7 months ago

If Barry team was up he'd close it out. if behind he'd score the last 10 or so to win
tellthetruthg 4 months ago
There were a lot of reasons Barry was, well, unpopular. The jump from the NBA to the ABA, was probably the biggest reason. He was lambasted for that. He was also a huge egotist, who thought the world of himself. I read his "autobiography" back when he was still playing, and he basically implied he was the only decent player on Earth. But he was a great player. And a great announcer - but he was blackballed from that, too. SI ran article about him about 25 years ago, explaining why.

aba and nba??? isnt it hte same thing.
godwhyisthistaken 2 years ago
aba then was more spectacular and faster and more atheltism, nba then wasmore conservative, the only differnece then was the media coverage, aba has little media exposure,if you look at the video of aba, the same as nba todays game, the dunks, assists, showtime,

you're only as good as you can be effecient, in other words how can we say a player is so good and a legend if he is hurt all the time. The only time i see t-mac on the floor is in old highlights.
m7575w 2 years ago
was this before the NBA/ABA merge?
smokinballa415 2 years ago
He's even known to have had a strained relationship with his own kids. I like watching footage of this guy and reading about him.....he's kinda not talked about too much, he hurt public image of himself. He was a rebel and ahead of his time, a top5 small forward imo. He was as good at everything as Bird except on the glass. 90%FT underhanded....wow.

An in-his-prime Rick Barry could probably beat Tracy McGrady.
Agree or disagree?

Beat an in-prime Tracy McGrady? Probably not.
ShutURBiG 2 years ago
He could post him. He could also dunk and throw those baby hooks for good measure.
Ariamaluum 2 years ago
Beat him in what? As good as McGrady is, Barry in his prime was better at everything. Maybe not as athletic, but with his skills in everything else, he didn't need to rely on pure athleticism. Barry is a perfect teammate, who only took high percentage shots and created opportunities for other players. Tmac would not beat him.
ngbband 2 years ago
He would have had a hard time with Adam Morrison. It's a whole different level of athleticism now.
slender4 2 years ago
Barry was a perfectionist, who thought everyone else needed to play at his level of intensity (or insanity) - however the fact remains, he took an unheralded team of nobodies and willed them to an NBA championship - probably the greatest passing forward of all time - if he had remained with SF instead of jumping to the ABA he probably would have won afew titles - an all time great, undone by being an all time jerk as well - he got what he deserved as far as burning his bridges, just too anal..

Love you Rick!

thanks so much VeoShock... Barry is my altime fav... I lived in the Bay Area in '75 and went to all those games... the warriors were big upset winners as most NBA fans my know... thats why they played at the Cow Palace... the OAC was being used for something else... Barry was a scoring machine and the best player, bar none, in his prime in those ABA/NBA years IMHO... he owned DrJ... they used to say " the Nets didn't play last night, Barry scored 35"
lumpythefish 2 years ago 2
Real shame this guy has been sort of blackballed by the NBA......won his ring the real hard way, almost singlehandedly in 75, just like my other favourite player the Dream.

Why was the song "Summer Breeze" taken off the video?
It fitted the video nicely. An old-school legend's highlights with a classic old-school song.

Larry Bird was the better shooter and better passer, Rick was the better athlete and defensive player.
86pimp3 3 years ago
I agree that Larry Bird was a better passer and Rick Barry was a better athlete. But although Larry had a reputation as a great shooter, he didn't shoot that great of a percentage for his career. So I give shooting to Rick. Also, I'd give defense to Larry. He was a great defensive player, because he was extremely smart and anticipated incredibly well.

Great Rick Barry video. I was lucky to go Game 3 at the Crap Palace when the Warriors won it in 75. The NBA needs to treat Rick with a helluva lot more respect then they do.
Casey4765 3 years ago
