  • Good game, but play it with a hangover at your own peril.

  • i saw this game a while back..i think ill pick this up for my Intellivison!

  • Wow fuck Galaxian and Space Invaders I want THIS.

  • Looks like the Atari 2600 version of Demon Attack has better graphics.

  • Good game the controllers made it so damn hard though. Like that they used the same spiral bullet/bomb from Space Armada too. That Boss stage when I was 13 was like WHOA!!!! ARCADE ACTION AT HOME

  • @thereagauze

How did the controls make it hard? All you had to do is press left or right on the disc. Maybe you were more used to joysticks? In which case you could have bought some Sticklers. And of course pressing any button enabled auto fire so that's not hard.

  • @sinistermoon I had the sticklers they were very awkward though for my childish hands holding the controller in a deathgrip while working a chess pawn , kinda sucked.

Anyway the standard pad I found doing quick left-right dodging between bullets hard, part of dodging is NOT moving at the right time too and I found this hard with the stock pad, as well as over shooting where I meant to be.

  • @sinistermoon Sticklers suck. I've tried them. They just don't feel right and don't make control any better. As for using the disc, it's just not as as quick and responsive compared to playing Demon Attack on the 2600 and has a floaty, impercise feel. It's too bad, as the graphics of the Inty version are very nice. A decent game, but the original plays better.

  • This version has a nice touch on variety but the gameplay graphics and sound is way better on Atari 2600.

  • Why bother when I can send it to you? Do you have a way to transfer it from the pc/mac to a 99/4a?

  • @Nadav34

Can't say that I do. Are you just playing rom files via a floppy drive on the TI or just using an emulator?

  • Nope.. I am playing it on a REAL TI... I have a gram kracker and pgram+ card which allows me to convert the module to disk.. saves wear and tear on my console :)

    The files are as follows:

    Demon

    Demon1,Demon2, Demon3, Demon4

  • 99/4a version is much better..

  • @Nadav34

I have a 99/4a so I will have to pick up a copy!

  • @Nadav34: yeah and the C=64 version of Demon Attack is the best..

  • Based on what I'm seeing in the video, I'm personally vouching towards the 2600 version.

I don't know if it's emulation issues or not, but the sound and motion aren't as good...

The visuals are odd. The background details have improved, but the characters are less colorful and animated. Plus that floor looks a bit higher, making the playing field smaller. Atari's appearance animation was kinda cool too.

I don't recall a boss in the 2600 version; THAT part reminds me of Phoenix...

  • @MalamiteLtd

Yeah I think it's more like Phoenix with the boss. And Demon Attack for the 2600 is more like Phoenix with out the boss. Although the Intellivision had more powerful hardware than the Atari, the Atari had a larger color palette than the Intellivision. And of course more colors make things more detailed. If I had to choose a favorite I would choose this version since it's the version I grew up with so that nostalgia is there for me. But now I own all the games I just mentioned.

  • @sinistermoon I get the feeling it's because a lot of folks grew up with the 2600 version that they prefer it. That's just my theory though.

  • @MalamiteLtd

From the comments I've got on this video over the 2 years or so I've had it up, I would say your theory is fact.

  • @MalamiteLtd I agree. This is one of the very few games that I prefer playing on the Atari 2600. The 2600 version is more colorful and the motion is better.

  • this is intellivision, good skill i remember this game i played a lot.

    sorry for my english

  • LOL... interesting to see that there are still atari snobs around...even today....lol...

  • @doublestrokeroll

Haha yeah. I get plenty of comments from the Atari snobs. Always cracks me up!

  • @doublestrokeroll Who the heck is an Atari snob today? Old games now end up in Game Room. One can enjoy games on multiplatforms. All things consider the Intellivision version is better than the 2600 version (the 2600 version is good still though). The problem with the Intellivision version was that it was seen as too close to Phoenix by the courts and got pulled from the shelves.

I say this as an Atari fan, by the way.

  • Looks like an attempt on the Intellivision to try and port Phoenix?

  • Actually, Atari attempted to sue Imagic because it was so similar to Phoenix(Imagic settled out of court). But it has nothing to do with Intellivision as Imagic put this game out on several platforms.

  • this game is hard

  • My god this is SO much worse then the original version on Atari 2600 and the 8-bit homecomputers !!!

  • @AtariAndre42

ooh ack! You're right. I had never seen the intel version until now...only pics back in the day, the still pics looked great, but seeing the horrible animation now....yeah, the 2600 definitely had the superior version.

  • I loved the box art too with the silver rubber demon with the wings and missiles. CLASSIC.

  • Just been playing this on my intellivision, absolutely brilliant (but mine crashes between levels now and again boo hoo)

  • cute....

a game doesnt need fancy graphics and sound to make it great!!

    gameplay is all we need!!!

  • unbelievable I once loved this game because of its realistic graphics :-)

  • OH. MY. GOD.

This was my very first Intellivision game. My friends and I played this for hours on end.

  • A couple of notes on this version, the "shield" protecting the mother ship only counted the shots you made that did not hit a ship as to how quickly the mother ship's shields wore off. In addition, after the exploding bombs (lvl 2) you got the guided bombs that looked like a orange :)

  • omg! watch out for the swastika bombs! :p

  • Liked this game better on the 2600.

  • Is there any reasons?

  • I have all the game console versions (Odyssey², Intellivision, and Atari 2600) and I love em all.

  • I only have played this version, the box is awesome, this company has a flashy chrome box for all it's titles. Dragons Breath and Beauty and the Beast were two other good ones.

  • wouldnt that be "Dragonfire"

  • Always wanted an Intellivision back in the day and i'm certainly very fond of it

  • Demon Attack remain one of my fondest memories from this era and i guess that was down to how it allways got my heart pumping upon reaching those later levels

I guess it comes down to which version you grew up with though and i'm probably being a bit unfair with my comments

With what you have said, i'm looking at this version now thinking it has it's own charm too

I rated Phoenix to be quite a good shooter but lacking the intensity, is this true also with the Intellivision version?

  • Love the Intellivision but this was 100 times worse than the amazing Atari2600 version.Even the C64 conversion didn't measure up

It's pure class too and actually a graphical delight for the Atari

Great game but then it is Imagic

  • I of course respect your opinion but I only agree with half of it. While the Atari version did show some awesome graphics for the console, it was pretty much just a clone of Phoenix. And the Intellivision version had the whole demon ship scene which the Atari version lacked.

But I think we can both agree that Imagic makes some awesome games.

  • Thanks for your fair response

Yes i should really play this version as to be fair i have only seen it in action

Graphics i would say are less impressive on the clearly superior Intellivision but then maybe that's down to how the 2600 allowed some tricks

I found each level always felt quite individual regards to the different aliens - not much in the way of a variety of aliens on the Intellivision

I always rememer getting to the little eyed aliens with a fear of dread

  • this stuff IS actually happening on the moon right now....

  • Where's the rover?

  • In my opinion, the better animation, character movement and higher, multicolored demons outweigh the backgrounds found in the Intellivision. Also I find that the Atari VCS version is a more enjoyable experience to play. So far, the best looking version of the game I have seen is the one for the Ti99a, but I haven't played it yet.

  • The crazy thing is that the Atari version looks better.

  • I disagree. The backgrounds on that game are very...well there pretty much is none lol. And the Intellivision version has different screens as you can see in the video. But I do like the way the explosions and demons look on the Atari version. Both versions have their ups and downs I suppose. I like them both.

  • I had this game at least 23 years ago, this is much better than the Atari version.

  • aH! The rythmic beep-beep is getting higher pitched!!!! I can't take the tension!!!!

  • i want that game

  • This game is pretty fun, unless you have a hangover.

  • Haha agreed.

  • this stuff IS actually happening on the moon right now....

  • Yes

  • Kick ass! Thanx! :)

  • I can see my house from here.

  • Another classic I had as a kid. I was always the envy of my friends because I always had a feeling which game would be the best. Does anyone remember the Dreadnaught Facter?????

  • I haven't seen this game since my childhood. Thanks for posting it!

  • One of the worst games you can play with a hangover.

  • I am the least ambidextrous person on the planet, so I would never be able to play this game effectively :'(

  • I liked the TRS-80 version of Demon Attack better, since it was a great merging of both the Atari 2600 and Intellivision versions.

  • Lovely visuals - Imagic really knew how to make the Intellivision's graphics sing.

However, this version of Demon Attack lacks the classic quality of the Atari VCS game. No eye-candy background on VCS, no 2d stage, but the demons were better rendered and animated, and I liked the gameplay better.

Unlike Atlantis, where Imagic's fantastic Intellivision version beat out even the excellent VCS version.

  • Growing up I had an Intellivision. And my cousin had an Atari 2600. We would always debate which one the game would look/play better on. And to this day I still have the same opinion. And that is that Intellivision games ALWAYS look and play better.

But yeah Atlantis is an EXCELLENT game. And I just might have to do an Atari/Intellivision comparsion vid for fun now!

    Thanks for you comment.

  • man I use to love that game LOL

  • I still do! lol

  • That good old "splash" sound (when the ship explode) ... Imagic seemed to use it in every single game they launched lol ...

And the "random notes" when killing enemies gets annoying after 2 minutes ...

    Ahh ... Memories ...

  • Also they would use that white noise sound for crowds cheering on every sports game.
