When I was a kid growing up near San Francisco, I thought so much of Martin Luther King, Jr., and then when I learned of Susan B. Anthony and Mahatma Ghandi, and then of Nelson Mandela.
But the gay rights marches in San Francisco were scary. Angry, yelling, partially clad adult men in clown facepeint. Enough to make an entire generation of kids into homophobic adults. There could have been less of a knee-jerk reaction of distrust that these yellers would be good with kids. Yelling is scary
