hey guys..me too ....confused. I want something light to transport around from house to house in 5 hours. I am thinking of getting a Roland AX-Synth keytar or a small synth like the Roland Sh-201... I prefer the 49 keys so it can double up as a KB. I am not a professional... I just play accompaniment and sing with the religious prayer group... You suggestion is welcom....tnx ed
I'm really confused by this synth. I've come very close to buying it but opinions on it are just so divided. I've heard that the build quality is very poor and must say that it looks very cheap to my eyes. However, the one thing above all else that makes me think there must be something special about this synth is that Richard Barbieri has one. Why would a keyboardist with a classic synthesizer collection, Prophet 5's, Oberheim, (you get the picture) have one of these if they're so worthless?
@MisAnnThorpe It doesnt make much sense, but basicly the people giving this synth a hard time is upset that the "SH" isnt attached to an old 80's analogue synth. They care more about it being analogue than what can actually be done with the synth.
And that's why alot of professionals have this synth, because they care more about results than the exact nature of the gear, it is cheap, lightweight, userfriendly and sounds great.
Knobs feel cheap though, but holds up well in use all the same.
Got one a few weeks ago. Got a question. I´ve bought a secondhand sh-201. I can only load the patches from the sh-201 librarian and editor. I can´t get sounds out of my synth without using the librarian or editor and I don´t want it to be stuck on my computer! can someone give a detailed instruction?
@NielsLP I don't see why you can't get sounds straight out of the synth. U sure there's no problem with the synth itself ? Try the "Roland clan forum". Someone might be able to help you there.
Yes, it was part of the Korg Legacy Collection i bought. I use it as a controller for my 76 key Casio WK1800 which you can't see in this video, it's above the MS-20
That's the mini MS-20 controller that came with the Korg Legacy Collection Anniversary Edition. I use it with my old 76 key Casio WK 1800 keyboard that's above the controller.
Thats impressive what that thing can do. I've seen just plain keyboards priced around what Roland is asking for the SH-201 and yet this does so much more. Great video. Just trying to figure out whether to get this first or the Juno-D.
I have a SH-201 too, and i love it. The lay out and programming concept are top notch, especially for a newb player like myself. The routing/filter options make connecting a groovebox or other for jamming/live purposes a snap! And the sound engine is just flawless, the quality and depth of sounds produced is nigh unrivalled at this cost! But tbh the standard patches arent all that awesome, and the features in terms of recording performances etc feels kinda limited.
Roland just released a new 400 voice patch set for FREE. i downloaded it from their website. Some nice sounds so far, haven't tried them all out yet, that may take a while....lolz
moogs are monophonic. and moog-fanatics often defend them as the 'original'. there are so many new synths that will blow this old original piece of crap moog away. wonder why moog couldn't catchup with the times and become polyphonic. sequential circuits and roland have been making poly analogs since the late 70's / early 80's. ok roland is japanese, sequential and alesis are american - at least moog should have taken influence from them.
3500 bucks for one damn note of monophony? no thanks!
I've messed around with Moogs at the music store and I'm still scratching my head trying to figure out what the fuss is all about. Seems like more of a brand name/elitist kind of thing more than anything else.
@lavakava IMHO side by side comparisons of my moog little phatty with several VA synths didnt yield a "better" synth. They all sound and feel completely different.
@lavakava Moog stayed monophonic ? You clearly don't know what the hell you're talking about. I've just right behind me a Polymoog an 88 keys keyboard. And this synth is the only one in the whole world to be actually 88keys polyphonic. Not 4, not 8, not 12… 88. And it came out in the middle of the 70's. And that's just one of them.
Are you serious the filters on this are nothing compared to a Minimoog, and the sh-201 isn't even analog. These are two different kinds of synths we're talking about here, you're not even meant to compare them.

Sounds really cool almost like a cross between Philip Glass and a national geographic special.

I like what you did here, Mars53, in fact, very much. It seems like something that I would do.

Wish they’d been selling this instead back when I bought the stupid D-70 in the early ’90s.

Good music for the start of a thriller about someone finding out a secret and being persued. Tense. Good for a chase scene.

I use the MS-20 with my old Casio WK1800 Midi keyboard that is above the MS-20 and out of the picture.

Moog doesn't need to change. You don't know shit about synthesis if you are saying anything bad about Moog. Don't quit your day job.

I wasn't comparing any Moog synth to the SH-201. I was just speaking in general, and agreeing with lavakava's previous comment.
Vondur 2 years ago
Actually, this IS a powerful little synth. It's capabilities are endless, you just have to do some programming. It is a programmer's synth!

you want an analog thing? get a moog! it maybe cost a lot of money, but it is worth it

Quit being a jerk. Did you ever think that he was trying out the built-in settings on the synth? He never said he was demonstrating his own patches.
