I thought that was a weber kit as soon as I saw the bigass speaker ohm switch... I built a plexi1987 kit from them, added a lar-mar MV a switchable RR mod and am gona put a tube rectifier in it to make it at least a little more jtm-like, gona try to put it in an avatar 212 vertical that'll need relocated speakers. theyre good amps I'd do it again it was a fun build
Nice job man!!! I wonder if I could take my 50 watt Marshall 1987x (plexi small head re-issue) and buy the Weber BluesBreaker combo cab...and install it, to make a 50 watt Bluesbreaker?? I guess it would fit right? After years of hauling extention cabs around....a combo is looking good to me. Any advice? NICE build and playing !! Thanks in advance.
Wow you convinced me.. I have a loop station and i use it through a Peavey (i know :D) and really he can't handle an overdubbing.. This amp can really handle it, your second song really shows how it can handle bass line + sCREAMy solo line (if it goes low, it really not disturbing the other line). I hope you understand me a bit..
@a0nmusic Yeah it does sound kind of flabby but hear that's mostly the compression from YT itself-it probably sounds way better live than on this video.
that is true, the Bassman was the amp that got Marshall building his own amps but the NEW Bassman sounds brittle like this clone amp. The vintage Bassman and the vintage Marshall Model 1962 amp do not have that "new Jensen reissue speaker" type of brittleness. That was my point. It still sounds pretty nice, just a tad crispy to me. I have a vintage 59 Bassman and I also have new LTD tweed Bassman as well. The vintage amp sounds sweeter to me.
yes, the reissue Bassman is a great sounding amp but there is a difference. I have both new and old. The old one is far smoother sounding when cranked up than the new Bassman tweed LTD amp with it's Italian Jensen speakers and circuit board. I should try hooking up 4 Weber speakers and maybe some NOS tubes to see if I can get it to be smoother sounding than it is currently. I do have top of the line Groove Tubes in it now but it's still harsher sounding when I A/B the two amps.
@RockyEpiphone Because (as stated above) , Jim Marshall copied the best sounding amp available at the time, the Fender Bassman. The main difference in sound between a vintage Marshall and a real 59 Bassman is the speakers and the cabinet. Fender is open back with 4 x 10" alnico Jensens and Marshall had 4 x 12" speakers in a closed back cab. Jim Marshall even used the same tubes as a Fender in his first builds the JTM45 Bassman was 45 watts too
That lead dress needs some help....that's not just a cosmetic issue either....it really will help your amp to sound better (less hum etc.) if you get the wires neatened up.
Thats what we in the trade call a rats nest...clean up that wiring son, it will reduce all that hum and noise you got going on and will improve your tone.
I think most people fail to realise the sound that everyone wants from a Marshall also involves the speakers distorting - I have had many 50w combos and heads, and if you don't use celestions, the sound just doesn't break up - frankly I LOVE the sound of a 50w at full tilt - with a decent Gibson - no need for pedals, they just...take off!
the amp have almost tone heaven like you say because you have yellow capacitors and metal film resistors, this is the key to get a maximum of sound signal.
because i know what kind of material is the best to allow a maximum of signal i have poor knowledge in electronic?
do the same amp with carbon resistors and cheap capacitors. some amps can give incredible sound but this dont mean a good tone. anyway all that with the best alnico speaker and matched quality transformer it help a lot.
I've been tweaking my JTM45 for 3 years now. I can tell you have very little knowledge about electronics. Some of the cheaper transformers can sound better the the ones made by mercury magnetics. Its all marketing and what really counts is what your ears like. I find that carbon comp resistors really don't do much but add noise except the NFB circuit and nothing beats the original mustard caps. Alnico speakers are great for clean/chimmy, round/creamy but lack the crunch of ceramic speakers
Tone heaven.
