This is old news but when B5 was facing possible cancellation by the end of S4, JMS was forced to cram a lot of what would have originally been in S5 in S4. When TNT picked up B5 for the last season (and pretty much at the last minute), JMS found he had to pad out a lot of shows with that lame-ass Byron and the Hippy Telepaths storyline - something he never intended to do had PTEN not gone belly up.

The hate for the Byron storyline is fucking mind-blowing. No, it wasn't one of the show's strongest arcs, but does it deserve to be hated with THIS much passion?! Fuck no. It's like the Evelyn arc in Twin Peaks; it's not "good," but it's an easy target for fans during a period of the show that they don't quite like because it's not what was done earlier.

Byron is supposed to be a highly charismatic character. Maybe it's the fault of the writers, the director, or the actor, but he comes across as a whiny brat.
