I know I will be buried under a mud slide of hate, but I have to say this : STAR WARS RUINED SCIENCE FICTION. Instead of being about the possibilities of humanity in space it has just devolved to it's lowest mechanical apsects. I await the hate, but you I'm right.
@SuperHeroMania It became all about the hard ware and the mechanics of science fiction. It is really nothing more than an overblown Flash Gordon serial from the forties. I work at a movie theater where we are playing the 3D version and I am happy to say that not a single person turned out for the midnight screening. Hopefully it just tanks and goes away and will give MR. Lucas cause not to pursue this plan of 3D'ing the remainder of the series.
As terrible as Star Wars is as a franchise, the original 3 movies are a fun throwback to sci fi serials from the forties and fifties. Star Wars was never meant to be about the possibilities of humans and space, not all Sci Fi is. Star Wars, at its original inception, was about applying The Hero's Journy to a sci fi setting. Sure the OT are dumb and goofy films but they have plenty of good qualities to make up for the stupid and a little silliness never hurt anyone.
@TheKamacuras But it set a standard that we have yet to out grow. It has dragged science fiction down to that childish level of the Saurday morning serials instead of explorinng more ambitious themes. I am kind of glad they have never made a movie out of Sranger In A Strange Land or Childhood's End or made a decent Philip K. Dick adaptation yet (sorry, but Blade Runner was just cops and robbers with androids) and was a mere shadow of the original book. All art direction no content
You know it's funny, and I don't know why, but when I was a kid it was Jar Jar who first got me interested in Star Wars. I hate him now, but it's funny to look back and remember that it's because of him that I'm a fan of Star Wars today lol
ok, Jar Jar is kinda annoying, but he has his moments. My biggest problem with this movie is... Viceroy Nute Gunray. "shiver" terrible character, terrible makeup, completely fake. To me, he makes Jar Jar look like God
@ganandolf31 Just set up three computers, play a montage of Anakin's whiny scenes on one, a montage of jar jar on the next, and Leia singing the theme from the Christmas special on the third..... Sit in the middle and enjoy fanboy HELL........... Believe it man, I tried it.
Jar Jar annoys me but honestly, he is not the worst thing in the prequels. I do not hate Jar Jar or the prequels as much as other people do. I love Star Wars, in it's entirety. I have watched the movies since I was a kid, I just don't take them as seriously as other people do because, well, the original movies were silly movies as well. I still love them, but I am not as polarized as other fans have become.
@eastwing329 the main problem with the prequels was that people either didn't care about them or they just didn't match the expectations that people had with them. That and the writing really showed that these were written in the 70's, the casting of Jake Lloyd and Hayden Christiansen as Anakin as well as the writing for the character was bad. Plus the midichlorian crap, which I will never buy.
@ganandolf31 No I'm serious, it's real. No joke. In the newest (besides the up and coming 3D stuff) Lucas makes Aldaran explode in a brand new way for epp 4 Return of the Jedi. In the scene Jar Jar turns to see the impending doom and then the planet explodes.
@ConnorsCreations24 We all make mistakes when we're kids that we regret. For example, I used to think Batman Forever was a good movie when I was ten. The important part is that we've all gotten beyond those flaws, and now are smacking ourselves for being total idiots as children.
@ConnorsCreations24 It's okay. The biggest highlight for the movie's release was how much CG they incorporated into the franchise; so I was more impressed/distracted by THAT rather than the characters.

@LokitheCajun Oh, yeah. The token, funny black guy. He probably didn't think of it. Don't tell him. You never know what he will do in 20 years when he "recreates" these movies like he did the first ones in order to make more money - I mean - fulfill his vision.
@belladonna4577 It's odd, isn't it. Rifftrax is just as good (in some cases, funnier) and they refer to each other by name, but still....old habits die hard. Long live Crow and Tom!
I remember very well my Dad saying (after I think the second film came out) that Lucas ruined everything when he named "A New Hope" episode IV because you knew who was going to live and who was going to die...
Hey, don't blame all the gungans! In case you forgot they were origionally going to KILL Jar Jar if he returned, but Qui Guan Jinn used their own logic against them! WHY!? And I LIKE Liam Neason!
"issa film wreckin' lizard". Classic. Couldn't agree more. Saw this in the cinema and loathed the character right from first appearance. In fact 85% of Phantom Menace was just awful.
I don't know, Gungans who aren't Jar Jar are sorta badass...for a primitive forest/water-dwelling race, they're pretty ferocious and well-organized fighters. Then again those flimsy-ass battle droids aren't exactly a tough target.
Quote from a James Patterson novel: "We went out and saw Star Wars Episode One: The Phantom Menace". We had a good time..." (something about wishing that there was more Samuel L. Jackson) Um, Alex Cross is a pretty cool guy, but was that seriously the only problem you had with it?!

Um, Jar Jar a character arc? Like, what does he do?
At the beginning, he takes the Jedis to the city... then he remembers that they've got an army... does some completely useless (and accidental) shit during the battle... and then accidentally suggests to promote Palpatine.
What character arc?
He's probably the "brightest" of all the characters, considering that most others are kinda dull, but that's not an arc.
I think you've just remembered what Mike Stoklasa said...
@twooffour Actually I'm a real writer, so I know what I'm talking about without RLM telling me. I didn't say Jar-jar had a GOOD character arc, I just said he was the only character WITH one. He doesn't do very much at all, but he IS the only character who changes throughout the movies in any significant way. He goes from outcast, to adventurer, to general, to hero, to senator, to political tool, to . . . whatever he was in that little scene in Episode 3.
@twooffour He grows and changes - he is actually effected by the things that are going on around him. Furthermore, he is the only one with a backstory that makes any sense at all, and the only one with a really functional culture to back up his existence.
As far as I know, RLM didn't talk about any of these things. . .
Ok, I grant you the RLM thing, but I don't see how you can say that Jar Jar somehow has the "only", or "most" character development - affected how exactly?
He has a "sad moment" or two on Coruscant (damn, there's actually one scene there where he's not one bit annoying), just like Anakin... he contributes to winning the day by mentioning his army at a convenient moment... just like Anakin wins the podrace... and then continues doing stuff by accident and not really achieving
... anything, while Anakin does the same, but... somehow 'splodes the enemy flagship.
Anakin grows into a not-silly sad "padawan", Jar Jar... remains a silly person till the moment he elects Palpatine.
And then, of course, Obi-Wan changes in the course of the trilogy (he's the only character who achieves a victory by his own efforts at the end of TPM), and Christensen-Anakin pretty much has an "arc", even if it's kinda sloppy.
@twooffour Not character development. Character arc. They are different. Jar-jar is not the focus of the movies, obviously, even Ep 1, but tell me this, who is Anakin? We learn about him and see the stuff he does, but does his actual character change? Tell me one smart or nice thing he ever did - and falling into the most boring romance of all time doesn't count.
@EmmaOnATangent "but does his actual character change" That's character development, though ;) "roles that span the whole three movies" Nope, only the first two. How "logical" you consider him becoming a senator, or suddenly remembering that gungans have an army, is up to you I guess. "a background that makes sense" Um, so do Obiwan and Anakin. Some slave owners used to be rather nice. "Tell me one smart or nice thing he ever did" Um I dunno, volunteering for the podrace, winning it,...
then, um, chasing the assassin, doing some nice stuff during battles and missions etc. - not much, but incomparably more than... Jar Jar.
Sure, JJ does "end up somewhere different", but we don't see the transition - he's just appointed to a "general" for no reason, then bam, he's a senator... great.
@twooffour What I mean with Jar-jar is that he seems to be the only character Lucas CARED about enough to write like a real character. He has a culture, a background that makes sense, and a logical progression of scenes and roles that span the whole three movies. (baby Anakin and Christensen Anakin are two completely different characters, so the argument could be made that even Anakin wasn't actually IN all three movies)
While don't like Jar Jar, I think he could have been good if they reeled him in a little. He was just too much of a cartoon than an actual living being.
Joel had a few Jar Jar moments. Sort of. Remember that invention exchange when his head spun around? That was kind of toony. Well, "toony" doesn't have to mean "Jar Jarry." Oh! Oh! Oh! Remember that one scene in the Trumpy episode? The whole Satellite of Love had a Jar Jar moment! Larry was kind of like an "evil" Jar Jar.
I wonder what happened to him after the Empire took over maybe if I'm lucky Vader force choked him or Emperor Palpatine gave him electroshock therapy.
Probably. Meaning that you're going to that special little purgatory reserved for George Lucas when you die. Can't go into full detail but the fanny paddling will be numerous and agonizing.
@ImagineWizard ....of course you are. You're free to admit you eat liver and onions for every meal, and I'm free to feel sorry for you or mock you for it, as long as you're freely sharing it on the WORLD WIDE web.
Y'know, one of the most depressing things I found about the prequels was that I knew all of the characters (Qui Gon, Yoda, Anakin, Padme, Obi Wan, etc) would be dead by the end of the saga.
Even more depressing? Jar Jar apparently lived. Worst Galactic war in a thousand years AND JAR JAR SURVIVES.
@JamesOhGoodie We don't know that. There was a 20-year gap between Episodes 3 and 4, which is plenty of time for Jar Jar to have died an agonizing death off-screen.
so Jar Jar's the cause of the Clone Wars, which will eventually turn into the Galactic Civil War. huh. Jar Jar did have an important role in the prequals. he screwed everything up.
@LauraIsPink We should prepare written apologies for our parents for putting them through this shit. Other parents have nightmares about difficult puberties, our parents see Jar Jar when they close their eyes at night.
@BriannaDawnc i'm pretty sure that was the demographic that lucas was going for. unfortunately he didn't think about the adult audience and how they typically hate these type of characters.
6:09 Jar Jar just completely misinterpreted and sabotaged Padme's entire campaign in the Senate. Well, that's what happens when you leave Jar Jar in charge! A vicious intergalactic war breaks out.
@ForceMaximus84 True. Plus I think Padme is to blame almost as much, since she put Jar Jar in charge in the first place. Which was such a stupid decision it almost makes my head explode. I mean, didn't she travel with Jar Jar in the first movie? So she knows exactly what he's like.
@CynicalCatharsis *sigh* well, I gota say I've got a love/hate relationship with George at this point. On one hand there's the new 3 star wars, the "Star Wars" thing at Walt Disney World (little kids beating on a guy dressed in a Darth Vader suit with plastic lightsabers), and JarJar. On the other hand he did create the first 3 Star Wars, Skywalker ranch, THX (theatre sound standards) and a bunch of other things inlcuding the Young Indiana Jones series.
It's funny, because when this movie came out, I was 9 years old, and hadn't seen any of the other Star Wars movies, and I actually liked Jar Jar! Even bought a toy of his that came with one of those voice chip things. To this day, I have yet to sit through one of the original trilogy movies.
@Knifegash Then I would ask you to please watch them, because I think your opinion would be way more objective then those of us who have watched the originals over and over since our childhoods, you'd be watching them fresh with no sense of nostagla

I wonder what happened to him after the Empire took over maybe if I'm lucky Vader force choked him or Emperor Palpatine gave him electroshock therapy.

Am I the only person who likes Jar Jar ... ? :/
ImagineWizard 6 months ago
@ImagineWizard
Probably. Meaning that you're going to that special little purgatory reserved for George Lucas when you die. Can't go into full detail but the fanny paddling will be numerous and agonizing.
Windclaw 6 months ago
@Windclaw ...
I don't know who you are, but I strongly dislike you.

@ImagineWizard
Ya mean it? *BIG ROGER RABBIT SMOOCH, then runs off laughing*
Windclaw 6 months ago
@ImagineWizard You do realize admitting you like Jar Jar is like admitting you don't brush your teeth. It's better if nobody knew.
dignankumar 6 months ago
@dignankumar *indignantly* I think I'm entitled to have my own opinion on a fictional character and express it if I so wish.
ImagineWizard 6 months ago
@ImagineWizard ....of course you are. You're free to admit you eat liver and onions for every meal, and I'm free to feel sorry for you or mock you for it, as long as you're freely sharing it on the WORLD WIDE web.

@ImagineWizard Yes, if the human race is to survive, I really hope so.

This riff is something I've dreamed of since I first saw "The Phantom Menace".

Proof positive why Jar Jar sucks. He was the one that gave power to the Chancellor.

Jar Jar ruined Episode 1. it may have been great without him. now it is just... average...

Ahmed Best and George Lucas voted thumbs down.

@Mistoffelees11-That makes sense, Jar Jar is far more terrifying than sharks or poisonous jellyfish.
MsAckAck 7 months ago
Y'know, one of the most depressing things I found about the prequels was that I knew all of the characters (Qui Gon, Yoda, Anakin, Padme, Obi Wan, etc) would be dead by the end of the saga.
Even more depressing? Jar Jar apparently lived. Worst Galactic war in a thousand years AND JAR JAR SURVIVES.

@JamesOhGoodie Finally, a place that's wose to live in than the 40k universe.
Raaszhecku 4 months ago
@JamesOhGoodie We don't know that. There was a 20-year gap between Episodes 3 and 4, which is plenty of time for Jar Jar to have died an agonizing death off-screen.
Usyra 3 months ago
@Usyra But unfortunately not. Jar Jar has a cameo at the end of Return of the jedi (the special edition)

@toodrunktomakelove Oh. ...Stupid special edition.

so Jar Jar's the cause of the Clone Wars, which will eventually turn into the Galactic Civil War. huh. Jar Jar did have an important role in the prequals. he screwed everything up.

i think i just figured out my childhood fear of the deep sea, which i still have. its because fuckin jar jar lives under there

We couldn't possibly be that blessed.

i thought jar jar was funny . . . then again i was ten when the movie came out.
LauraIsPink 9 months ago 32
@LauraIsPink We should prepare written apologies for our parents for putting them through this shit. Other parents have nightmares about difficult puberties, our parents see Jar Jar when they close their eyes at night.

@AkamuSlayer lol i agree.

@LauraIsPink lol I was gonna say the same thing.
BriannaDawnc 4 months ago
@BriannaDawnc i'm pretty sure that was the demographic that lucas was going for. unfortunately he didn't think about the adult audience and how they typically hate these type of characters.
LauraIsPink 4 months ago
The best wise cracking minds, and all we get is 6 minutes of "shut up and go to hell!" That's how bad Jar-Jar is.
chariot0421 10 months ago
6:09 Jar Jar just completely misinterpreted and sabotaged Padme's entire campaign in the Senate. Well, that's what happens when you leave Jar Jar in charge! A vicious intergalactic war breaks out.
StarWoid1 10 months ago
The best part of the Episode 1 video game was that you could kill Jar Jar over and over again. It ended the game every time but so worth it.

ion010101 10 months ago
Without Jar Jar Binks, a good riff from the people at Rifftrax would not be possible.
collegeman1988 10 months ago
I will say this: At the very least, Lucas made him the reason the Clone Wars start, giving everyone a little more reason to hate him.
ForceMaximus84 10 months ago
@ForceMaximus84 True. Plus I think Padme is to blame almost as much, since she put Jar Jar in charge in the first place. Which was such a stupid decision it almost makes my head explode. I mean, didn't she travel with Jar Jar in the first movie? So she knows exactly what he's like.
tehhypo 8 months ago
@tehhypo Maybe because Captain Tarpals hates politics and Boss Nass is too fat to fit into the Senate pods. i honestly don't know.

I used to play custom maps on star wars battleground and just slaughter gungans.
ShadowCrashed81 10 months ago
i like JarJar
Shard18 10 months ago

Don't feel so bad. I've been through all 6 and I like Jar Jar as well. :)
MsTwinkle101 11 months ago
@Knifegash Then I would ask you to please watch them, because I think your opinion would be way more objective then those of us who have watched the originals over and over since our childhoods, you'd be watching them fresh with no sense of nostagla
