@guyrocksurworld101 It takes light about 8-10 hours to travel around the circumference of that star, which is roughly the distance from Earth to Uranus. Say we want to take a plane to the opposite side of the star.. The distance covered would be 4154442125km! That is, in plain words, 4.1 billion km! The distance from the Earth to Neptune, roughly..! Taking out the factors of melting ourselves.. it would take 4590544 hours, 191272 days and 524 YEARS! 524 years on a commercial plane (B747)?

The sun will grow big enough to engulf the Earth (1.75 - 2.00 AU) when it becomes a red giant in about five billion years. By then the sun will be lighter (billions of years from now a lot of mass will have been burned off/ejected) & cooler (but still probably hot enough to vaporize the inner planets).

Some of the comparison figures appeared to be wrong though.

Earth's diameter is approx 12800km. The sun's diameter is approx 1392000km. The ratio is more like 109 (i.e. the sun is 109 earth diameters), not the 342 earth diameters that the video quoted around 1:05. The same error (by the same margin) exists for VV Cephai at 2:20.

Stars like Canis are rare, usually found at the centre of galaxies. They are probably an old red giant star at the end of it's life, having swelled up to 100 or more times its original size. If a star was any bigger than Canis, it wouldnt be able to keep it's nuclear reaction going inside, and the star would fail and explode. Stars can only get to a certain size. A star born big will not last as long as a sun like ours either, as it burns it's fuel off 1000's of times faster.

The biggest star known so far is VY Canis Majoris, and VV Cephei star is actually 2644x Sun, and the video must be old because Pluto no longer a planet because it is very small.

@jensypoops VV Cephei A, now the ≈ 2nd largest known star, If placed in the center of the solar system would likely extend past the orbit of Jupiter and approach that of Saturn. the largest known star VY Canis Majoris ( Assuming the ≈ upper size limit of 2100 solar radii,) If placed in the center of the solar system, radius would beyond the orbit of Saturn.

@edwardus25 No it's not. See, this is where the media fucks up! They should have explained this... R136a1 is the most massive star found, but that does not mean it' is the biggest. Basically mass is the weight of something; so although r136 is far more massive than VY Canis Majoris, VV Cephei A and many of the other huge stars, it is nowhere close to approaching their size or radius!

Despite how big they are most of these are under 150 solar masses as the more massive a star is, the more energetic it is and the more it pushes the outer layers outward with the pressure of the light generated.
